Chapter 31
The silence that hung over the village was almost oppressive, broken only by the distant sound of the wind rustling the leaves and the occasional crackle of the torches along the barricades. Everyone knew time was running out. The shadow of Lord Feng seemed to draw closer, unseen but undeniable. Castian stood in the central square, surrounded by a small group of guards and villagers. He had spent the night keeping watch, observing the shadows in the forest and feeling the weight of responsibility grow heavier with every passing moment. His body was tired, but his mind would not rest. He knew Feng was testing the village, playing on their fears. And now, as the sun barely lit the cloudy sky, Feng's next move arrived in the form of a new messenger. The man rode into the village down the main road, bringing with him an air of urgency. He wore dark, simple clothes, but the dragon emblem on his chest made it clear he spoke for Feng. As soon as he dismounted, the guards surrounded him, but he raised his hands in a gesture of peace. "I bring a message from my lord, Lord Feng," the man said, his voice steady and devoid of emotion. The village elders, including Boron and Eldar, were already gathered in the square, their faces tense as they awaited the message. Castian approached, gripping the sword at his waist but remaining silent. He knew this moment would be pivotal. The messenger pulled out a scroll sealed with Feng's emblem and handed it to Boron, who hesitated before opening it. His hands trembled slightly, but he kept his posture firm as he unfolded the paper and read the words aloud. "To the inhabitants of Liang Village," Boron began, his deep voice echoing through the square. "This is the final time I offer you the chance to surrender the Celestial Pearl without bloodshed. If you do not hand it over by sunset tomorrow, I will send my army to destroy the village and take what is rightfully mine. There will be no negotiations. Choose wisely, for your time is running out." The silence that followed Boron's reading was almost unbearable. The villagers around them began murmuring, their voices filled with fear and despair. Some wept, while others looked to the elders for guidance. But no one seemed to know what to do. "He’s bluffing," Eldar said, attempting to maintain calm. "Feng knows he will face resistance. He doesn’t want to waste his resources on a small village like ours." "And what if he’s not bluffing?" Merith, the youngest of the elders, countered. "We can’t ignore this threat. We can’t sacrifice the entire village for something we might not even be able to protect." Merith’s words caused the murmurs to grow louder. Castian watched in silence, frustration building within him. He knew many of his neighbors were already considering surrendering the Pearl, but he also knew that doing so would be a grave mistake. "Surrendering the Pearl is not an option!" Castian finally spoke, his firm voice cutting through the murmurs like a blade. All eyes turned to him. "Do you think Feng will stop if we give him what he wants? He’s a tyrant. If we give him the Pearl, he’ll just use its power to destroy more villages, enslave more people. And who’s to say he’ll spare us afterward?" Boron looked at Castian, his expression serious. "And what do you suggest, Castian? Fight Feng? Resist an entire army with poorly trained men and improvised weapons?" Castian clenched his fists. He knew Boron was partially right, but he also knew they couldn’t simply surrender. "I know we’re at a disadvantage," he replied. "But we have something Feng doesn’t: the determination to protect our home. This village might seem small and insignificant to him, but it’s everything we have. If we don’t fight now, we’re doomed either way." The murmurs in the crowd subsided, but the tension was still palpable. Castian felt the gazes of his parents among the villagers. Cheng, his father, looked worried, while Mei’s expression held a mix of pride and fear. Feng’s messenger, who had remained silent until now, stepped forward."My lord is a man of his word," he said coldly. "If you surrender the Pearl, he will spare your lives. But if you resist, he will show no mercy. Consider your decision carefully." "We’ve heard enough," Boron said, his voice heavy with exhaustion. He gestured for the guards to escort the messenger out of the village. As the man departed, the square fell silent once more. Boron looked at the gathered villagers, his features etched with the weight of responsibility."We will convene the council later to decide what to do," he said before leaving with the other elders. The villagers began to disperse, but fear and uncertainty lingered. Castian remained in the square, feeling increasingly isolated. He knew many of his neighbors didn’t share his resolve to resist. For them, surrendering the Pearl seemed like the only way to survive. Later, Castian returned home to find Cheng sitting near the fireplace, his face marked with worry. Mei was in the kitchen, glancing at her husband and son now and then, clearly aware of the tension between them. "You spoke well today, Castian," Cheng said, breaking the silence. "But that doesn’t mean everyone agrees with you. Many people are scared. And rightfully so." "I know," Castian replied, sitting beside his father. "But we can’t just give up the Pearl. You know what it means. It’s not just an object. It’s a symbol of who we are. And Feng will never stop until he gets everything he wants." Cheng sighed, running a hand through his graying hair. "I just want to protect my family, Castian. I want to protect you and your mother. Sometimes, fighting isn’t the best choice. Sometimes, you have to retreat to live another day." "And what happens after that?" Castian asked, his voice firm. "If we retreat now, Feng will keep coming after us. We can’t live in fear forever." Cheng remained silent for a moment, staring at the fire. He knew his son was right, but he also knew the battle they faced was far greater than them. "I just want you to be careful, Castian," he finally said. "You have the heart of a leader, but you also have much to lose. Don’t let your courage blind you to what truly matters." Castian nodded but said nothing. He knew his father spoke from the heart, but he couldn’t ignore what was at stake. He needed to protect the village, even if it meant risking everything. As night fell, Castian left his home to walk. He needed a moment to organize his thoughts. The village was quiet, but he could feel the tension in the air. The torches along the barricades cast dancing shadows, and the cold wind carried an omen of conflict. He made his way to the highest point in the village, where he could gaze out at the horizon. The trees swayed gently in the distance, but to Castian, they seemed to conceal something. He knew Feng was out there, waiting, planning. Holding the Celestial Pearl in his hands, Castian closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He didn’t know what the future held, but he knew he had to be ready to face it. "I won’t give up," he thought. "For the village, for my family... I will fight."
