Chapter 27

CHAPTER 27
“You knew her personally?” A lesson I learned in this town was that asking a few people would uncover truths in a mystery. Chaz only told me a few details yet they helped me to get to know Mila well.
Chaz bobbed his head. “We’ve been friends. I’m not sure why they call her crazy. She lost her parents, but she’s not the type who will grieve like that. She’s tough. A contender for a fearless woman. We lost in translation when my parents died. She stopped training and I stopped seeing others.”
I was about to speak when he continued.
“The two of us…” His adam’s apple moved. “Were really great friends while training. A human and a werewolf, but there’s no discrimination in between. She’s the first, the only one who kept my secret that I like guys. We realized we’re not that different from one another. Then my parents were killed. Why are you asking me again, Catherine?”
“She talked to me. She told me I was the key to justice for her parents. She knew what happened to me, that my parents were killed. She told me there must be a connection between the two murders. The two of us might help each other. But I can’t trust her enough that’s why I approached you since you’re one of the few that I could trust. But thank you and sorry for intervening in your activity earlier. I should’ve been more careful.”
Chaz stood up and patted my head. “If Mila needed your trust, then you could trust her. Tell her, I’m still her friend. If she needed me, she could always approach me. For what happened earlier, get ready tomorrow for your punishment. One thing I hated the most is when someone’s messing up with my time with Kaz.”
“Sorry! I’m really sorry. I didn’t know the thing between the two of you.”
“It’s fine. Just don’t mess up with other people if you don’t want to put yourself in danger. Werewolves are hotheaded. They would kill if they were mad. They don’t think easily. And please, don’t tell the others about us. Keep us as one of your secrets.”
“Secret will be sealed. Thank you for helping me.”

I snuck myself on my way back home. I was glad the sun wasn’t set down for now. I could catch up a few bits of time at Mila’s, to talk to her more about our plan.
I looked left and right before I entered her yard. I almost tiptoed toward her door before I knocked on it. Mila got out. As always, her hair and clothes were a mess.
“I thought you’re not going to trust me?” She raised a brow. “Come in.” She aggressively pulled my arm so I could enter my body completely inside his hut or house. I’m not sure about that. “What did you hear about me that made you trust me?”
“Chaz.” As I spoke his name, her eyes bulged like a balloon. “He told me I could trust you.”
“He’s alive? I thought he was killed along with his parents. I was glad that he’s alive!”
“Yes. He’s training us. A group of werewolves in his house. He told me I could trust you…and to tell you that he’s still your friend no matter what happened. Now, I want to hear your story. The truth about you and what happened.”
We trudged to one of the bamboo chairs and sat there, ready to hear the truth about her.
“Do you want a tea or coffee?” she asked.
I shrugged. “I don’t need nothing but your story. Your truth.” And the truth about my parents’ death as well.
She closed her eyes for a few seconds, holding back her tears. Her face turned pale. The house felt hotter than earlier. “Many years ago, the town is full of humans. No werewolves. Nothing but humans. Then a small family of werewolves resided in this town, they turned every one to become werewolves except for my family. I was born in a time when everyone was mostly werewolf. My Mom told me not to trust anyone. I wasn’t able to attend school because of that. When I was eighteen, something happened to me. Something I couldn’t tell you. Something that I kept a secret and that would remain as a secret until now.”
“Tell me. The whole truth.”
“No, it wasn’t relevant to my story. It has nothing to do with the death of my parents. I grieved for what happened. Became vulnerable and weak, but I met Chaz’s father. He trained me physically so I would be able to fight werewolves who would try to bully my family. There were only a few werewolves I could trust, most of them were not part of the pack. Then Chaz’s parents died. I stopped training. I came back to my old self inside the hut. I thought my life would turn normal but…”
“A group of werewolves attacked your house, killing both of your parents, leaving you nothing but yourself.” There was tenderness inside my voice. Maybe because I could relate to her or that was the few bits of the truth. Months ago, I suffered from that as well. Werewolves entering our home. Killing Mom and Dad. A nightmare. A reality I wished was just a dream. But I had to cope with it, live my life in a new town, where I will be crazy as hell.
“I was saved by the sunlight. The day was the one that gave me life. I knew they would turn back to me the next evening or next week or next month. So I made myself crazy, someone whom others won’t mind. It worked. For years, I lived my life like this. There were times I thought I would be better off dead, but I had to revenge for my parents. For the life, they lost because of me.”
“And how did you know that it is the Alpha who killed your parents.”
“Because he’s the only one who has a grudge on me, who will want me to die. I did something to him that’s why he has a reason to do that to me.” She scraped my skin with her fingernails and whispered, “You’re the only one I could latch into. Because we’re the same. You and I have the same reason why we wanted to do this.”
