CHAPTER 33 “Back off,” Mila told me. We paced backward, avoiding the werewolves coming for us. She held her machete and her eyes stared strong at the wolves. We’re being outnumbered. I don’t have the strength to fight any of them. I should’ve not gotten myself in this place at this time. The wolves started to growl, hungry for taste, and passionate for blood. I almost scratched my arms. My body trembled into fear. What can we do now? Mila’s a human; she doesn’t have the strength of a werewolf. I’m a half-blood who was not ready to turn into a wolf. I’m gonna die! “Catherine!” Mila screamed and tried to attack two of the wolves. We split. She’s on the right side of her house, in the kitchen, while I was in the living room with two other wolves trying to make me prey. Mila has a weapon. I don’t have any. I crawled backward as my eyes traveled back and forth to the wolves and to the things inside Mila’s house. She should’ve not left me alone. How can I fight these two alone? Werewolves growled at me. I could smell their deadly smell. They smell freaking worse than stray dogs in the streets. I don’t want to be a dead body the next morning. “Don’t come for me. I’m not human,” I told the werewolves but it seemed they were not listening. “I’m not what you think.” That’s when I told myself they won’t stop. They will attack me, hurt me, and maybe even kill me. They knew I couldn’t fight them. They must be watching me from afar. I should’ve expected more in this town. I should’ve listened to my brothers. I should’ve stayed lowkey in life. Being the invisible one, a normal human. Mine seek for justice brought me to this kind of situation. A situation I don’t like to be in. I tried to raise my calf and hit the wolves. They dodged it easily. I plunged my fist forward, trying to hit their faces but I barely hit them. I wasn’t an expert when it comes to martial arts. I just tried. I glanced back at Mila. She tried to scare the wolves with her machete. She wasn’t the same crazy woman everyone talked about. She has a goal to protect and preserve her life. For her parents. For the justice and maybe I should do the same. One of the wolves tried to scratch my skin with his paw, but I used all of my strength and kick his neck. The wolf fell to the ground. Did I just become stronger than I used to? I forgot there was another wolf. The other wolf tried to bite me when a black wolf entered Mila’s hut and attacked the two wolves behind. Gelo! I knew it was Gelo! He’s a black wolf. I suddenly cheered inside my head. That’s right. Gelo can fight those wolves. He was strong. He looked and saved us. The two wolves who were attacking Mila decided to attack Gelo as well. Gelo’s outnumbered yet he tried to fight for himself. For us. I can’t help but watch. Fear rose inside me that they might defeat Gelo. Though he’s strong and he can protect himself, he’s outnumbered. I wished Gelo was able to fight them. Mila helped Gelo. She successfully hit one of the wolves with her machete. Blood started to drip from the wolf’s back. It cried out of pain. Then it growled with anger and revenge. It jumped to Mila who dropped and hit her head on the ground. Gelo, on the other hand, was hit by their paws. Knife-like fingers wounded his wolf body. I mindlessly placed my fingers near my mouth and started to bite them. I should help them! I should do something? But what can I do? Who am I to fight? I felt like I’m floating in space. I couldn’t believe what was happening. I can’t believe that I could not do something. One of the wolves hit Mila’s face directly with its paw. She screeched out of pain. An eerie sound. The wolf would destroy her face if it continued doing that. “Stop!” I screamed. No one listened. Words were not powerful in this kind of situation. “Just stop and leave! Don’t kill them!” Three wolves scratched Gelo’s wolf body in chorus. One in the head, back, and side. Gelo, in the body of a wolf, groaned out of pain. He dropped to the ground, barely breathing. Blood stained his night-black fur. “Can you all stop? Please stop! Tell us what you want! We’ll give it to you.” I grudged my hair. If this continues, I’ll turn crazy. I can’t let this happen. I can’t let the two of them get killed. But the werewolves weren’t listening. It looked like they were having fun hurting Mila and Gelo. For them, it was entertainment. They have pleasure and passion for killing people. They don’t care what is right and wrong. Gelo lost his strength. He turned to his human form again. He didn’t look like Gelo who always smiles at me, who makes me feel loved. On the other hand, Mila can’t fight anymore. She lay on the ground, coughing blood. Anger surged inside me. My blood started to boil, my heart beat faster. I bit the bottom of my lip. My eyes traveled back and forth to Gelo and Mila. I don’t want them to die. I don’t want them to die because of me. I don’t want someone to die by protecting me again. I don’t want to re-do what happened in the past. My parents were killed by wolves and I would not let it happen again. Energy transferred inside me. It felt like I was charged and my body was growing abnormally. I couldn’t describe what I felt. I gasped for air. Mad to breathe. And I finally turned into a four-legged creature. A white and beautiful four-legged creature. I was the moon in this dark time. I was light. I will save Gelo and Mila. I turned into a wolf.
