Chapter 4 Mistakes

During these three years, Zoe endured numerous instances of bullying. In the reformatory, which was no different from a prison, it was common for the older inmates to bully the new ones. The constant harassment made Zoe realize that not resisting meant awaiting death. He also discovered that there was a mysterious power within his body, and he began to harness it.
Everywhere in the world, there are souls that exist and linger, and in this reformatory, the vengeful spirits of the deceased youths were abundant, more so than in other places. These were primarily the souls of children who had been bullied and beaten to death. Zoe learned to command these souls, granting them power to move objects, tear up bedding, and even attack people. Those who dared to bully Zoe during the day would find themselves beaten so badly at night that their faces became unrecognizable.
From that point on, Zoe gradually established a position of power in the reformatory, even causing the gang leaders who were known for bullying others to fear him. They dared not provoke or bother him. Even Jill was frightened the first time she saw Zoe’s eyes glowing red, his hand outstretched, fingers tightening as he controlled a soul to strangle a victim. When Zoe did this, he looked nothing like a human but rather like a demon in human form.
But despite her fear, deep down, Jill hoped Zoe would continue killing. The more people he killed, the more opportunities Jill would have to enter Zoe’s body and devour the souls of others. The souls freshly severed from warm bodies were like exquisite desserts in a five-star restaurant—delicious and brimming with energy. As a result, Jill grew stronger, now able to hold a towel for Zoe when he bathed.
There was even an incident in the communal shower where a towel suddenly floated in mid-air before gently wrapping around Zoe’s shoulders, causing the other boys in the room to flee in terror, half-naked. They later reported this eerie occurrence to the guards, but who would believe them? After all, the reformatory was filled with delinquents with criminal records, capable of murder or maiming, and known for their foul mouths and tendency to frame others. So, who would take their word seriously?
During his three years in the reformatory, Zoe used his terrifying power only three times, each time to deal with the leaders of the gangs who bullied others. These leaders enjoyed tormenting the weak and the small, and those who refused to obey them were often the most brutally beaten.
Zoe had always been a quiet, introverted child, and because of this, he was often bullied. But Zoe never thought of fighting back. After being sent to the reformatory, he became even more withdrawn. An angel thrown into a den of demons would sooner or later be devoured, leaving nothing but bones. However, Zoe was fortunate to have a special power within him that no one knew about. This power transformed his angelic wings into the blood-red wings of Lucifer, the Lord of Hell. Anyone with malicious intent who dared approach him would pay a heavy price, often with their lives.
In three years, Zoe used this power to kill, and the methods of death were both strange and terrifying. The first to meet his fate was Alger. Like Zoe, Alger had been sent to the reformatory for manslaughter, though the circumstances were different. Alger was ruthless, his cruelty simmering silently beneath the surface. As a child, Alger had been subjected to severe abuse by his family, treated as a slave in his own home. Every morning, he would wake up before dawn and eat scraps no better than those fed to the pigs his father raised.
Eventually, he was sold to an old woman who owned a bar, forced to work as a server. By day, he served the bar’s patrons, and by night, he was forced to serve the old woman. Unable to endure it any longer, Alger attempted to escape, but he was caught and beaten nearly to death. When the lackeys had left the room, leaving only Alger and the old woman, Alger, driven to desperation, grabbed a fruit knife from the table and stabbed her in the heart. The blade, gleaming white, was plunged into her chest, and when he pulled it out, it was drenched in bright red, carrying with it a torrent of warm blood.
Though terrified by what he had done, Alger remained calm. After the murder, he fled, but was caught by the police a month later. Because he was still a minor, he was sent to the reformatory to await trial when he came of age.
People react differently to the sight of blood! Alger, who had been relentless in his violence, quickly became the leader of a gang within just two days of arriving at the reformatory. Even the older inmates who had been there for years didn’t dare to challenge him.
The conflict that led to Alger’s death was something he brought upon himself, and it was a death he deserved. It happened in the first month after Zoe was released from solitary confinement. As Zoe carried his blanket into the communal dormitory, he encountered Alger. Disgusted by Zoe’s pale and pure appearance, Alger decided to bully him. But Zoe used his power in the communal shower, allowing Jill to strangle Alger and consume his soul until it froze.
After Alger’s strange death, Zoe never dared to lose his temper or act out in anger again. Although Zoe wasn’t sure whether his actions were related to Alger’s death, he would rather believe they were than take any chances. When Zoe regained consciousness, he found Alger’s cold, stiff body lying motionless on the floor, his lifeless eyes staring up at him. Terrified, Zoe fled the communal shower, and about fifteen minutes later, the guards arrived. There were no injuries to suggest a fight had taken place, so the coroner concluded that Alger had died of sudden death.
Jill, having devoured yet another soul, grew even stronger. Now, she could hold a small knife between two fingers. She was thrilled by this discovery, her hopes of becoming the most powerful and immortal spirit burning even hotter in her cold, long-dead heart. Meanwhile, Zoe huddled under his blanket, trembling with fear and confusion. He didn’t know how he had caused Alger’s death. All he remembered was the rage he felt when Alger kicked him to the filthy, wet floor, the way he had screamed until his whole body shook, hoping the guards would hear him.
After that, he only recalled the overwhelming sense of power flooding through him, the murderous thoughts consuming his mind, and then... darkness as he passed out.
