22 - The Past Mistake
"I am all ears," he said and I nodded quietly.
"Father, you swore loyalty to his majesty, but I am quite sure you are aware of the certain valuable facts that he can't be ignored. I have told you my plans before, and I want you to know that nothing will change in that matter," I gently said, as I was careful with my words alone.
Even if this is the Roqueves Mansion, if words leaked out that I am insulting his majesty, I might as well die as a traitor instead. Though I trust my father in this matter, I can't be certain that this mere word won't leak out.
People are unjustified because they hide deep claws. One cannot be certain of such facts. Though I may have spoken the word in a slightly traitorous way, I am still talking to his majesty with such a crude and rude tune. Maybe I am just too careful, I know that the Roqueves Mansion is not something that his majesty can plant his spies whenever he wants.
I carefully held my head to calm my thoughts down. When suddenly I heard a long cough, making me look at my father in front. He seems regardless the same as before, I can tell. Though he is old, he seems more active than his average person.
"Fa—"
"I have yet given my thoughts, Holy," he interrupted as he looked at me. "Have I not told you that I will support anything you desire, regardless of the consequences and action of that choice?"
I am not sure, there's no recollection of it before, but he once told me that—however, it was in the future that is—he has not told me this in the past, because I sever our ties when I become Daniel's wife. It was the hectic moment, a day I hated the most.
We wed in such a slow phase, it was not even close to grand. Then once done, he refused to sleep with me. I was left alone in an empty room, it was not even the grandeur room in the palace, and it was cold like I never felt before.
Blinded by these feelings called love, I become an idiot who falls in the category of a fool who can't even command the palace maids. To be honest, it was not my choice, when I told Daniel this problem I had, he would brush me off with his sweet talks and leave me cold.
That became a problem for me. Blinded by an affections that has no meaning. In any case, I don't remember much about that future, because I have refused those miserable moments in my life.
"I don't think so," I responded and he nodded.
"Then do not worry, if you choose something, I will support you regardless—it will be the only thing I can give you—despite all those years of negligence. You have my word in that matter, that is why you're free to speak your mind off in front of me, you are a Roqueves Princess, never forget that," he gently said as I watched father speak those words with sincerity.
I've been wanting to hear that from my father. He usually would try to ignore me as if he didn't want to speak. Now, he's finally showing himself in front of me with more diligence and kindness. He must have been waiting for me to come home, and to redeem his faults yet I desperately shrugged their second chance to speak to me.
I didn't even invite them when I got married. I slowly looked down as I pinched my left hand with the finger nails from my right hand. It was painful but at the same time, it calmed me down from crying.
Because this time, I'll make sure to not repeat the same mistake. This time, I will stand up strong and brave to escape that hellish future. Of course, I plan to recover all of the time I had not spent with my family the most.
And maybe this time. We can be together without the fear of death.
"Thank you father."
It took me about a second of recollection before I looked up and stared at my father. It would have been easy to tell him about that but I refrained from doing so in a hasty way. Then of course, deciding to choose the words I will use, this is the safest I can go to speak no ill of his majesty.
I'd be better careful. "Her majesty and I have met when I planned to visit his highness the first prince. It was not my intention, but the empress directly summoned me through an unofficial visit. Then, a part of the plan I told you about with Eris has been revised for good."
The empress did agree with the plan but she preferred to keep it hidden that we are supporting his highness. "His highness is deeply ill, but I trust that he can be cured. I talked to her majesty about our deal, and we complied with the plan a bit further from the original."
I stopped for a moment to look him in the eye. He simply smiled at me and his eyes met with mine. I nodded in his warm support as I continued what I was talking about.
"Father, will the Roqueves Family support his highness, the first prince in the succession of the throne? To support her majesty in her conquest to become an empress dowager?" I said in question.
Father silently slid his arms on his desk that must have created a small sound. "Holy, we are the loyal servants of the crown, and we follow them regardless of the rule. However, the Roqueves Family is part of the oldest nobility who helped the foundation of the empire during the Valentines reign."
He then smiled. "Regardless of being old or not, the empress is still born as a Valentine."
Ah, what!? That's, how???
The empress is from a Valentine bloodline? My head couldn't take the information I just heard. This is the first time I even heard that the empress is a Valentine. I was not aware—is that why Kalester said that his been in the palace often and his presence can be useful in the negation with her majesty?—In that sense, the first prince is his cousin.
Or not?
"The empress is indeed a Valentine, but she's a relative of Kalester. She's part of the branch that is owned by the former Grand Duke's cousins. In a sense though, his highness the first prince is Kalester's distant relative."
"Is that so?"
He nodded. "The empress was not originally the empress, since she was just a candidate chosen from the best families. Her competitor at that moment was—" he tightly gripped his hand and looked away. "Your mother, Frine, was chosen by the emperor as a candidate but she chose to leave the candidacy to marry me."
This story? I have never heard it before. However, in the future, when I married Daniel, I once was told to be a daughter of a bastard by the emperor himself. Is this the reason he looked at me with hatred and disgust? No, maybe I have yet to hear the whole story.
"Father, did his majesty lusted for mother?"
Father stiffened and he carefully looked down. "Yes, he was obsessed with her. He began his interest the moment Frine decided to back down from the candidacy. Though your mother rejected his advances, he still kept on chasing after her even when the announcement of our union was told."
Even when they got married? Don't tell me.
"Did his majesty try to steal a married woman?" I asked in confusion. This story is becoming more connected than it ever felt before. Yet for some unknown reason it was still complicated.
"Your mother was pregnant with Eris that time, and his majesty came to threaten her life when she was out of the duchy. I was in a battle against the advances of bandits on voyage, that is why she almost had a miscarriage. In fear it may happen again, we calculate plans and we make sure your mother wasn't harmed, thankfully his majesty was forced to marry or else he'd even chase her in hellfire."
I see, no wonder his burning madness that he's been showing was rather unpleasant and uncomfortable. The emperor, he's damn enough to go this far, I won't be surprised if he decides to become a complete tyrant.
"What I am trying to imply," because my thoughts were preoccupied, I was surprised when my father suddenly spoke loudly then he calmed down. "Our ancestors pledge their loyalty to Valentine's, and we must continue to do so in the near future. You do not need to worry, because I have already supported her majesty and the first prince."
Valentine, huh? Kalester said that even if they take back the throne. They don't wish to have it as well, because they long forgot that the crown's original owner is them. They did not want to rule an empire, but they wanted to live out of the responsibilities of what a ruler may become.
Hence, even so, with the blood of Valentine who will take over the crown, then that means it will revive the blood of those who originally rule this empire? Is that why his majesty didn't save his son when he died? Nor did he care for his wife whom he cast aside?
Wait, the empress candidacy? Could she be? "Father, how many candidates were there? Is her majesty the only one left?"
He nodded quietly. "Yes, only two of the ladies were chosen to become a candidate, making her the only one left to take on the throne of the empress but when your mom left the candidacy, her position was stabilized. That is when his majesty went obsessed with Frine, he was forced to marry her to avoid any more conflict."
That explains all of the things I have witnessed during my first lifetime. The reason why his majesty looked at her majesty with utter contempt and hatred, and why he neglected her for years and cast her aside so easily. Even the death of his son brought him a facade of happiness and joy, something I can't understand.
It was terrifying the least. "Father, do you know about the unforeseen murder of Countess Hella?"
He looked at me for a while before he nodded. "She was murdered in an abby, and the nuns told that it was a faith that God Bestowed, though I am not sure either way since the murder happened a long time ago."
I nodded, I am not sure if it's connected but I can't get off my mind about what I overheard before I regressed, it was about the truth regardless of Countess Hella's murder, but I was not sure since it was a mere rumor that just died down rapidly.
"Countess Hella, thought she's a Dame who earns the medal of being the first female pharmacist, she was not warmly recognize by many, that is why she earn a many enemies who wants to get rid of her, but when she came to abby to live in seclusion, unknown enemies she did not encounter before came after her life, and she was brutally murdered with two of her organs gone missing," I said and then suddenly I realize what I've said and I covered my lips. No matter how immersed I am, why the hell did I say that?
No one knew that because I only heard it through rumors from the future. I shrugged my head. "Holy, how did you know that?"
Dammit, my lips shouldn't be saying some stupid things! I breathed in as I looked back but my father's eye showed his confusion that made me confused as well. I do not know if he'd believe me, and rather than thinking that he will, I'll just have to do it the same as I've fooled my brother.
"Uhm," I coughed and nodded. "That's right, I heard it in the palace before, it was probably about the time—though I am not sure—hehe?"
Father looked at me before he nodded. "I see," he then smiled before he took on the documents again. "Do not worry, if you wish to support the first prince, the Roqueves Family will follow you."
I smiled and nodded.Download Novelah App
