The loud clang of the tower bell pierced through the silence of the early morning, shattering the peaceful slumber that had enveloped me. I groggily opened my eyes, disoriented and confused, as the sound waves reverberated through every cell of my body. The bell's resonant tone was unfamiliar, and I struggled to sit up, my mind foggy and my body heavy with sleep. As I rubbed the remnants of slumber from my eyes, the knock on the door broke the stillness, and I hesitated for a moment before rising from the bed. The door creaked as I opened it, and Brother John's friendly face greeted me, his eyes sparkling with a warm smile. "Good morning, Gabriel! Time to rise and shine! Morning devotion is about to start in the chapel. Father Michael is waiting for us," he said, his voice cheerful and encouraging. I yawned, stretching my arms and arching my back, trying to shake off the remnants of sleep. The early morning wake-up call was a shock to my system, and I wasn't sure I was ready to face the day yet. But Brother John's enthusiasm was infectious, and I knew I had to get moving. "Thanks, Brother John. I'll be right there," I replied, my voice still husky from sleep. He nodded and handed me a small towel. "Great! You might want to wash your face and freshen up a bit. We'll be waiting for you in the chapel." I took the towel and nodded, watching as he turned and headed down the corridor. I closed the door and made my way to the small washbasin in the corner of my room. The cold water was a shock to my system, but it helped to clear the cobwebs from my mind. I dried my face and ran a hand through my hair, trying to tame the tangled mess. With a deep breath, I made my way out of my room and into the chapel. The soft glow of candles and the gentle murmur of voices greeted me, and I took a moment to compose myself before joining the others. Father Michael's warm smile welcomed me, and I took my place beside Brother John, ready to start the day with morning devotion. As the morning devotion came to a close, Father Michael's eyes locked onto mine, and he smiled warmly. "Gabriel, I have some exciting news for you," he said, his voice filled with enthusiasm. "Today, you will be starting your new life in our community, and that includes your education. You will be enrolled in our local school, where you will have the opportunity to learn and grow with other children your age." My heart skipped a beat as I processed this information. School? I hadn't thought about that yet. I had been so focused on adjusting to my new life in the church that I hadn't even considered the fact that I would need to continue my education. Father Michael's eyes seemed to sense my apprehension, and he placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "Do not worry, Gabriel. You will do just fine. You are a bright and capable young man, and I have no doubt that you will excel in your studies." He paused, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "But first, you must get ready. You will need to wear your uniform, and I have instructed Sister Margaret to help you prepare. She will meet you in your room in half an hour to assist you in getting dressed and ready for your first day of school." I nodded, feeling a mix of emotions swirling inside me. I was excited to start this new chapter of my life, but I was also nervous. What would the school be like? Would I make friends? Would I be able to keep up with the work? Father Michael's voice broke into my thoughts, his tone filled with encouragement. "Remember, Gabriel, you are not alone. You have us, your new family, to support you every step of the way. And you have yourself, your own strength and resilience. You will do great things, I have no doubt." With that, he smiled and nodded, and I knew that it was time to get ready for this new adventure. I made my way back to my room, my heart pounding with excitement and nerves, ready to face whatever lay ahead. As I waited for Sister Margaret to arrive with my uniform, I checked my watch for what felt like the hundredth time. It had been exactly half an hour since Father Michael had instructed her to meet me in my room. I was starting to get a little anxious, wondering if she had forgotten or if something had come up. Just as I was about to give up hope, I heard a faint knock on the door. I jumped up from my bed, expecting to see Sister Margaret standing in the corridor with my uniform in hand. But as I opened the door, my expectation was met with an empty hallway. The corridor was silent and still, with no sign of anyone in sight. I felt a shiver run down my spine as I stood there, wondering if I had imagined the knock. I closed the door and returned to my bed, trying to shake off the feeling of unease that had settled in. But then, I heard it again. The knock was louder this time, and it sent a pang of fear through my heart. I hesitated for a moment, my hand trembling as I reached for the door handle. As I opened the door, I was taken aback to see Sister Margaret standing before me, a kind smile on her face and my new uniform in her hands. I felt a wave of relief wash over me, but it was quickly replaced by confusion. "Sister Margaret, I...I thought I heard a knock before, but no one was there," I stuttered, trying to explain the strange occurrence. Sister Margaret's expression turned concerned, and she placed a gentle hand on my arm. "Oh, Gabriel, I'm so sorry if I frightened you. I must have knocked twice, perhaps the first time I was still far down the corridor and you didn't see me." I nodded, feeling a little silly for my overactive imagination. But as I took the uniform from her and began to change, I couldn't shake off the feeling that something strange was lurking in the shadows, waiting to pounce.
