Chapter 20: Information.

As I trudged back to my room, my mind was preoccupied with thoughts of Chris and our peculiar friendship. It dawned on me that our relationship had been singularly focused on the woods and its secrets, with little else in common to bind us together. A nagging sense of unease crept over me, as I wondered if Chris had been playing a duplicitous game all along.
Had he been feigning interest in our friendship solely to extract information about the woods and its inhabitants? The thought sent a shiver down my spine. How had he even discovered the truth about Dorothy's attack in the woods? The questions swirled in my head like a maelstrom, refusing to let me find peace.
I felt a growing sense of distrust towards Chris, our friendship now seeming like a mere facade. His persistent probing and suspicious behavior had finally convinced me that his intentions were far from pure. A sense of betrayal stung me, as I realized that our friendship had been a ruse all along.
As I entered my room, I couldn't shake off the feeling of unease. My mind raced with possibilities, each one more ominous than the last. I knew I had to be cautious, to protect myself and those I cared about from Chris's prying eyes. The woods, once a sanctuary, now seemed like a dangerous and uncertain territory, full of secrets and lies.
I made my way to Father Michael's office, my mind still reeling with questions and doubts. The legendary story he had shared with me about the woods and the vampires lingered in my thoughts, refusing to let me find peace. I needed answers, and I knew that Father Michael was the only one who could provide them.
As I entered his office, I was greeted by the familiar sight of books and papers scattered across his desk. Father Michael looked up from his work, a hint of surprise in his eyes. "Gabriel, my son, what brings you here today?" he asked, his voice warm and inviting.
I took a deep breath, my heart pounding in my chest. "Father Michael, I need to ask you something," I began, my voice hesitant. "About the story you told me, about the vampires in the woods...I can't stop thinking about it."
Father Michael's expression changed, his eyes narrowing slightly. "What about it, Gabriel?" he asked, his tone cautious.
I hesitated, unsure of how to phrase my question. "Are there people hunting them down?" I asked finally, my voice barely above a whisper. "Are they in danger?"
Father Michael's face went pale, his eyes flashing with a warning. "Gabriel, I told you that story in confidence," he said, his voice low and serious. "I never thought you'd go and ask questions about it."
I felt a surge of determination. "Father Michael, I need to know," I said, my voice firm. "Are they safe?"
Father Michael's expression turned stern, his eyes boring into mine. "Gabriel, I warn you, never speak or ask about this again," he said, his voice firm. "It's not safe, not for you, not for anyone. You must promise me that you'll never mention this again."
I felt a shiver run down my spine as Father Michael's eyes bore into mine. I knew that I had crossed a line, that I had ventured into forbidden territory.
"I promise, Father Michael," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
Father Michael's expression softened slightly, his eyes still serious. "Good," he said. "Now, leave my office, Gabriel. I have more important matters to attend to."
I nodded, feeling a mix of fear and respect for the priest. I knew that I had been warned, that I had to keep my promise. As I left his office, I couldn't shake off the feeling that I had stumbled into something much bigger and more dangerous than I could ever imagine.
The woods, once a place of wonder and curiosity, now seemed dark and foreboding. I knew that I had to be careful, that I had to keep my promise to Father Michael. But I couldn't shake off the feeling that I had only scratched the surface of a much larger secret, one that could change everything I thought I knew about the woods.
As I returned to my room, I was surprised to hear a knock on the door. I opened it to find Brother John standing in the hallway, his eyes scanning the surroundings cautiously. He glanced around to ensure no one was listening in or spying on him before stepping inside and closing the door behind him.
"Gabriel, I need to speak with you about something," he said in a hushed tone, his eyes locked onto mine with an air of urgency.
I nodded, intrigued by the secrecy and curiosity. "What is it, Brother John?"
He took a deep breath before continuing. "I overheard your conversation with Father Michael earlier. I know you're seeking answers about the vampires."
My eyes widened, surprised that he had been eavesdropping on our conversation. But before I could respond, he continued.
"I'll tell you what I know, Gabriel. But you must promise me that you'll keep this secret. Father Michael wouldn't approve of me sharing this information."
I nodded eagerly, my curiosity piqued. "I promise, Brother John. Please, tell me what you know."
Brother John hesitated for a moment before beginning his tale. "The story of the vampires is true, Gabriel. They did exist, and they were feared and hunted by humans. But what Father Michael didn't tell you is that after the castle was set on fire, the humans knew that the vampires would one day return. They created an organization, known as the Vampire Hunters, to prepare for that day."
My eyes were wide with wonder as Brother John continued. "The Vampire Hunters have been functioning in secret for centuries, waiting for any sign of vampire activity. They're ruthless and efficient, and they'll stop at nothing to eliminate any vampire they come across."
I felt a shiver run down my spine as I listened to Brother John's words. The thought of a secret organization dedicated to hunting and killing vampires was both fascinating and terrifying.
"But why are they still active today?" I asked, my curiosity getting the better of me.
Brother John's expression turned grave. "Because the vampires are not extinct, Gabriel. They're still out there, hiding in the shadows, waiting for their chance to strike. And the Vampire Hunters are ready to strike back."
I felt a chill run down my spine as I realized the weight of Brother John's words. The world was not as simple as I had thought. There were secrets and dangers lurking in the shadows, and I had stumbled into the middle of it all.
