Chapter 38 THE TRUTH

Because Leo was unwell that day, Luna was the one driving the car home. Leo had been vomiting severely, and not only that, he was experiencing an excruciating headache. Despite having taken his medication, seeing Leo with a pale face in such pain was heart-wrenching for Luna. She glanced at Leo, who had fallen asleep beside her, and tears streamed down her face.
"Luna?" Leo woke up upon hearing Luna's sobs. She pulled the car over to the side of the road and got out, crying uncontrollably. Luna couldn't hold back her sadness any longer. She hated seeing Leo in pain.
Leo mustered the strength to get up and stepped out of the car.
"Luna? What's wrong? Are you okay?"
Luna looked at Leo's pale face, and her tears flowed even more.
"Luna..."
"I'm okay. It's just... I hate seeing you in pain. I hate myself for not being able to reduce your pain even a little..." Luna wiped her tears repeatedly. Leo held both of her hands with a faint smile.
"You have to be strong, Luna. We promised to go through everything together, right? So, you have to be strong. I promise I'll get better for you. So, for my sake, you have to be strong. Can you do that?" Leo asked, wiping Luna's tears. She hugged him tightly and nodded. Leo patted her back, trying to comfort her.
"Let's go straight to the hospital. Deeja is waiting for us there."
Luna nodded.
When they arrived at the hospital, Deeja decided to admit Leo for his chemotherapy treatment. Luna and Leo's mothers stayed by his side, taking care of him. With his mother looking after him at the hospital, Leo repeatedly urged Luna to go back to work, but she refused. Leo didn't want her to worry, but Luna knew she couldn't stop worrying about him. She wanted the old Leo back—the cheerful, sweet Leo, the same one from their honeymoon. The Leo now was different. Every time she looked at him, she felt like crying. His pale face and his sunken body all made her sad. Luna remained hopeful, waiting for Leo to recover. Before she knew it, nearly a month had passed with Leo in the hospital undergoing chemotherapy. Given how long she had been away from work, and after much insistence from her mother-in-law, Luna finally went to work that day, her mind filled with worry. Focus? It was completely empty. Luna sighed repeatedly.
"Luna, there's someone here to see you," Daniel said as he walked into the kitchen.
"Who?" Luna wondered aloud. She was already worried about Leo. Who could possibly want to see her now? Luna sighed multiple times.
"Just follow me," Daniel replied briefly. Luna took off her apron and followed Daniel. He led her to a table where a girl was waiting.
"Luna!" The girl hugged her tightly. Luna was confused. Huh?
"I've missed you so much! How have you been? I'm sorry I left you. Why didn't you call me? Do you not want to be friends with me anymore?" The questions came one after another as the hug ended.
"Err...who are you?" Luna asked.
The girl was stunned.
"You don't recognize me? What did Leo do to you? Did he brainwash you so you wouldn't recognize me? Unbelievable! He's so cruel!"
Luna's brow furrowed even more. Leo? This girl knows Leo?
"She lost her memory, Clara," Daniel, who had been silent, interjected.
"What? Memory loss? How did that happen?"
"Well, it's because you changed your phone number. Luna had an accident and then was in a coma. When she woke up, she didn't remember anything and Leo..."
"What? What about Leo? Did that bastard take advantage of Luna?" Clara's eyes were sharp.
"Wait. What's going on? Why are you calling Leo that?" Luna felt anger rising. How could this stranger call Leo a bastard? She didn't even know Leo. What right did she have to call him that?
"Luna, you don't know the real Leo. He..."
"You don't know him either. No matter what, you shouldn't talk about him like that. If I hear you call him that again, I'll throw you out of this café." With those words, Luna stormed off, feeling furious.
Clara was left gaping, unable to believe what had just come out of Luna's mouth. Something clicked in Clara's mind. Her mouth opened wide.
"Oh my god, Niel. Don't tell me she..."
"Yes, Clara. You're not wrong. She fell for him and already married him."
Clara's eyes widened in shock.
"What?!"
Luna thought she wouldn't see that rude and strange girl again. She was wrong. That afternoon, as she was about to leave, it turned out that the girl had been waiting to talk to her. Initially, Luna didn't want to entertain her, but after persistent insistence, Luna finally agreed. They went to a nearby restaurant. Luna was indifferent, her mind solely on Leo. She wanted to go to the hospital to see Leo.
"Say what you need to say now. I don't have time. I want to go home," Luna said when it seemed like the girl was trying to delay her time.
"Where are you going home to? I went back to our place, and your clothes were gone. Are you living somewhere else now?"
Luna raised an eyebrow. Our place?
"Okay. Sorry. You must be confused and don't recognize me. Yes, I get it. Let me introduce myself first. My name is Clara. I'm your friend and also your housemate. We've been living together for a long time. I know everything that has happened to you, and I know that man. He's not what you think he is."
"Stop. I don't know what the hell you're talking about. I want to go home now," Luna stood up abruptly.
"Wait," Clara pleaded, holding Luna back. "Let me explain everything. You need to know this, Luna. I understand that you can't remember, but you must know this. Please, listen to me."
Luna sighed and sat back down, her heart pounding inexplicably. It was probably just her imagination, she reassured herself.
Clara took a deep breath and began to tell her story. She revealed everything about Leo and even talked about Adam. Clara laid out every detail that Luna had never known. Luna shook her head in disbelief, her heart feeling constricted. Why did Clara's stories about Leo contradict the Leo she knew now? It couldn't be. Clara must be wrong.
"No. You're lying. Leo is not like that. You're mistaken!" Luna refused to believe her.
"No, Luna. I'm telling you the truth. I'm your best friend. I wouldn't lie about these things. I wouldn't lie to my best friend."
"No. I still don't believe you. You have the wrong person. He's not like that. You're wrong. If your intention is to cause a rift between us, your efforts are in vain because I won't easily believe anyone, especially you!"
"Okay, relax. If you don't believe me, I have one more piece of evidence. Your diary. Where's your diary? Have you read it? It contains everything about what happened. You wrote it yourself so you wouldn't forget what he did to you."
"My diary? My diary is gone. Only one page is left. The rest are all missing."
"What? Missing? It must be him! I'm sure the missing pages are with him. Trust me, Luna. You have to find those pages. You..."
"Stop. That's enough of you slandering Leo. I don't want to hear anything else from you." Luna stood up and walked away.
"Find it, Luna! It must be him!" Clara shouted. She sighed as Luna left without acknowledging her words.
"You're back early?" Mrs. Serena greeted Luna as soon as she arrived home.
"I came back early to get some of Leo's things and then head to the hospital."
"Okay, let's go together. I came back to make some porridge for Leo. You know how it is; since the chemotherapy, he hasn't had much of an appetite and has lost weight," Mrs Serena said.
"Okay, Mom. I'll go upstairs for a bit." Luna went upstairs. As soon as she stepped into Leo's room, Clara's words echoed in her mind.
'Find it, Luna! It must be him!'
Luna closed her eyes. It couldn't be. Clara must be wrong. Luna's heart denied it, but her mind kept replaying Clara's words, along with the stories about Leo. She sat on the edge of Leo's bed and opened his bedside drawer. Her hands trembled. The first drawer contained nothing but unknown files.
What are you doing, Luna? Her heart whispered.
Luna opened the second drawer.
Her breath caught. Her hands shook as she pulled out the not-so-thick stack of papers. Fragments. Her diary. She didn't know how to react. Her breath hitched, her heart pounding. So... this was Leo's true face? Her heart shattered. She wiped away the tears that fell. She used the time she had to read everything written there. Her heart broke again. For the second time, she felt betrayed.
"Luna?" Mrs. Serena's voice startled Luna. She turned, her shoulders shaking with sobs. Her heart was torn apart. Without acknowledging Mrs. Serena, Luna ran out. Somehow, she stumbled while descending the stairs. She tumbled down, finally landing at the bottom, unconscious.
"Luna!"
The time has come. The moment Leo had feared all along had finally arrived. Leo resigned himself to his fate. His deceit had ensnared him. It had been two days since Luna was admitted to the hospital after falling down the stairs. She was getting better. So was her memory. Yes. Luna remembered everything. Leo knew he should be happy that Luna had regained her memory. He should be happy for her. But he felt differently. He would lose Luna forever. He didn't have to wait for death to lose her; he had already lost her now.
Leo sat deep in thought in his hospital room.
"Poor you..."
Leo turned his face to the side. Deeja had just entered the room.
"I heard she remembers everything now." Deeja sat down beside Leo.
Leo nodded weakly.
"You haven't seen her yet? You know what, Leo. You should see her. Explain why you deceived her."
Leo shook his head.
"It's no use. She'll never trust me again. I've already lost her, Dee…"
"She's your wife, Leo. She'll understand, especially considering your condition now. Even if she finds it hard to forgive you now, one day, when she understands, she'll come back to you." Deeja tried to comfort Leo, understanding his feelings.
"One day?" Leo laughed bitterly.
"You know there isn't a 'one day' for me, right? I don't have time, Dee. Maybe it's already written in my fate to die without her forgiveness." Leo’s face was somber.
"Stop talking nonsense. You're going to get better. I'll help you. I won't let you die just like that, Leo. For now, why don't you just rest? Don't think about anything. Just rest, okay?"
"Do you really think I'll get better? Why do I feel like I'm getting worse? Day by day, I forget more things; there are many things I can't remember, I don't even recognize my own mom sometimes, and my vision fluctuates. Do you really think I'll get better? Be honest with me, Deeja. What are my chances of recovery?" Leo asked, trying to suppress the turmoil in his heart. Deeja seemed conflicted.
"You will get better, Leo. I promise. I'll do whatever it takes to make you better. I won't let you die. I have some work to do. I'll see you later for the next chemotherapy session." Deeja walked out. Leo sighed. He knew Deeja was just trying to avoid the topic. He exhaled sharply. Hearing the word "chemotherapy" was enough to make him feel exhausted. He closed his eyes for a moment.
"Leo..." Mrs. Anna entered Leo's room with a sorrowful face. Seeing Leo's pale face and condition was enough to break her heart. Leo's hair had thinned considerably, and he had returned to wearing his beanie.
"Leo..." Mrs. Anna called again. When Leo remained silent, Mrs. Anna shook his body. He opened his eyes, looking surprised.
"When did you arrive, Mom? I didn't hear you come in." Leo was puzzled.
Mrs. Anna held back the sadness welling up inside her.
"I called you earlier. Didn't you hear me?"
Leo watched as his mom's lips moved, seemingly saying something, but strangely, he couldn't hear anything.
"Mom… I can't hear you…" Leo said. His eyes filled with tears, followed by a loud ringing in his ears. The ringing was accompanied by excruciating pain. Leo held his head.
"Hang on, Leo. I'll get the doctor!"
As Leo clutched his head in pain, he noticed a vision of Luna crying and running toward him before everything went dark.
