Chapter 37 THE PROMISE

"Where are we going?" Luna asked as soon as Leo pulled her towards the jetty. The boat was already waiting. Where were they going, she wondered. It was exactly seven o'clock at night.
"Just follow me." Although still confused, Luna complied. They both got into the boat. They put on their life jackets. The boat began to move as the sun was setting. It was beautiful. Luna glanced at the silent Leo. Where was Leo taking her? Leo was always full of surprises. Within a few minutes, the boat stopped at an island...
Wait a minute!
If she wasn't mistaken, this was the island she had seen from the balcony, right? What Luna didn't expect was a tent already set up with a campfire on the island, facing the vast open sea. Luna covered her mouth, stunned. She knew it; Leo was indeed full of surprises. She looked at Leo in disbelief. Leo smiled and extended his hand to Luna.
"Let's get off."
Luna took Leo's hand, and they both got off the boat.
"Enjoy your honeymoon, Leo," Luna heard the boatman say in a low voice. Leo nodded and smiled in gratitude. The boatman saluted Leo before departing with his boat.
Luna was startled when Leo took her hand.
"So, how is it? Do you like the surprise I made?" Leo asked.
Luna smiled.
"Of course I do. So, while I was sleeping, this is what you were working on?"
Leo grinned.
"Since when did you become this sweet?" Luna asked.
"Since I married you," Leo replied spontaneously. Luna laughed.
"This is how I show you how much I love you. I told you. This honeymoon will be something you won't forget for the rest of your life."
"Thank you. I'm having so much fun."
Leo smiled sweetly.
"Want to hear something?" he asked.
"What is it?"
"I love you more than I love myself. I love you enough to fight for you, compromise for you, and sacrifice myself for you if needed. Enough to miss you incredibly when we're apart, no matter the length of time or the distance," said Leo. Luna smiled.
"Enough to believe in our relationship, to stand by it through the worst of times, to have faith in our strength as a couple, and to never give up on us. Enough to spend the rest of my life with you, be there for you when you need me, and never ever want to leave you or live without you. I love you this much, my precious wife," Leo continued.
"Let me say something, too," Luna said.
"You want to reply to what I said, don't you?"
"Just listen first."
"Okay, I'm listening. Say it."
"I love you more than I love myself. I love you enough to fight for you, compromise for you, and sacrifice myself for you if needed. Enough to miss you incredibly when we're apart, no matter the length of time or the distance, and never ever want to leave you or live without you. I love you this much, my lovely husband," Luna said, kissing Leo's right cheek.
"Hey, those were my words! It's not fair to copy me like that!"
"Your words are my words, too," Luna said casually, raising her eyebrows repeatedly.
"Okay, I get it. Since we're sharing our lives, we have to share everything. Right?"
"Glad you know!"
Luna smiled softly.
"Is it good?" Leo asked Luna, who was thoroughly enjoying the perfectly grilled chicken over the campfire. The biting cold of the night wasn't so bad, thanks to the campfire.
"Of course, it's good. You're a great cook," Luna praised sincerely.
Leo smiled at Luna's compliment and handed her another piece of chicken.
"That's huge!"
"Honey, just eat. Tonight, eat as much as you want. It makes me happy to cook for you."
"What if I get fat?" Luna touched her cheek, wondering if it suddenly looked chubbier.
Leo laughed sweetly.
"Honey, I don't care. No matter what, I'll always love you."
"Really? Can I trust someone as sweet-talking as you?" Luna wasn't convinced.
"Trust me. I won't turn away from you. Once I love you, I love you forever."
"Seriously?" Luna laughed.
"Of course." Leo raised his eyebrows. Luna rolled her eyes.
Leo suddenly stood up from his seat.
"Where are you going?" Luna asked.
Leo laughed.
"You really can't be apart from me, can you? Always restless when I'm not around."
Luna blushed. No need to tease her. Yes, it's true. She couldn't bear to be apart from Leo. If she could, she'd follow him anywhere, even to the ends of the earth, as long as she was with Leo.
Luna watched as Leo entered the tent and came out a few minutes later with a guitar.
Leo sat back down with the guitar in hand.
"A guitar?"
Leo grinned.
"So honey, what song do you want me to sing?"
"I want you to sing that song from earlier, can you?"
"Of course." Leo winked and began to strum the guitar and sing.
Luna clapped when Leo finished singing.
"Your singing is amazing. Better than Ed Sheeran." She praised lavishly. Leo smiled proudly, his chest swelling with pride.
"Of course. Your beloved husband is talented. I can do everything. Sing, cook, you name it!" Leo boasted.
Luna laugh.
"Wait, I just remembered. Mom called while I was waiting for you earlier."
"Mom? What did she say?"
"She didn't say much. She just told us to take care of ourselves. And... she had a request."
"What did she ask?"
"She wants twin grandchildren." Luna cannot stop blushing after saying that.
"Seriously, darling?" Leo grinned mischievously.
Luna's face turned red. Oh no! She felt like the sea had just washed over her face. So embarrassing!
"Hmm... Mom wants twins, huh? How do you think we can have twins?" Leo teased, glancing mischievously at Luna. Luna pinched Leo's shoulder hard.
"Ouch, honey, that hurts." Leo winced in pain.
"Serves you right!"
Leo laughed and stared at Luna for a long time. Her face turned even redder.
"What are you looking at?" Luna felt her face heat up under his gaze. Leo smiled and hugged Luna tightly. Luna smiled and returned the hug.
"Leo?"
"Hmm?"
"Do you know, I love it when you hug me. It feels safe, warm, calm, and peaceful. It feels like... it's just the two of us in this world," Luna confessed.
"Me too. I just want to hug you forever." Leo closed his eyes, enjoying the warmth of the embrace.
"Luna..." Leo released the hug. For a moment, their eyes locked. Luna looked away as her face grew hotter. Without a word, Leo lifted his hand to Luna's chin, making her look back into his eyes. Luna's heart raced faster as Leo leaned in and kissed her lips. The kiss was soft and full of love. Luna lost herself in the kiss until Leo suddenly pulled back.
Leo smiled sweetly at Luna while gently caressing her cheek. Luna smiled back and then raised her hand to Leo's neck, pulling him back for another kiss. That night once again proved their love for each other.
Leo and Luna did many activities like other married couples. Cooking together, playing together, watching TV together, watching fireflies together, and diving together. Before they knew it, that night was their last night before heading home. Luna sat alone on the beach. The cold wind brushed against her body.
She looked around. After dinner, Leo had told her to wait on the beach. He said he needed to go to the toilet. How long could he possibly take? Luna waited anxiously. She couldn't bear to be apart from Leo for long. Where did Leo go? Luna took out her phone. She dialled Leo's number. It went to voicemail. Luna typed a message.
Where are you? Don't make me worry.
Luna put her phone back in her jeans. She stood up from sitting. Before she could take a step, someone hugged her from behind. But Luna wasn't alarmed. From the scent of the cologne, she knew it was Leo, her beloved husband.
"Have you been waiting long?" Luna smiled and turned to face Leo.
"Where did you go?"
"To the toilet. I told you." Leo laughed.
"Oh yeah. I forgot." Luna grinned with a faint smile. She stared at Leo for a long time.
"What's wrong?" Leo noticed the change in Luna's expression.
"Tomorrow, we'll go back, and you'll continue your treatment. Promise me you'll keep fighting to live. Don't give up and stay strong, okay?" Luna said, holding back the pain as she imagined Leo's suffering from his illness. Leo nodded.
"I promise. No matter what happens, I'll keep fighting to live by your side forever." Leo answered, gently stroking Luna's cheek.
"I... I can't imagine my world without you. So please, keep your promise, okay?" Tears welled up in Luna's eyes. The end of that night would bring them back to a harsh reality.
"I will. So you have to promise, too. No matter what happens after this, never be far from my sight. I will keep my promise as long as you keep yours, too."
"I promise." Luna nodded weakly. They hooked their fingers together, a sign of a promise that wouldn't be broken.
"That's my girl. Now, look at that." Leo turned Luna to face the sea. He pointed to the sky. Suddenly, fireworks exploded in the sky. Luna was mesmerized. She smiled as she watched the fireworks light up the sky.
"Beautiful..." Luna's eyes sparkled. Leo hugged her waist.
"Do you like it?"
"Oh, so this is what you were preparing earlier?"
"Exactly. Do you like it?"
" I love it." Luna squeezed and kissed Leo's hand. A smile spread across her lips.
