Chapter 44 OUR ETERNAL LOVE
"Luna! Look at what Leth found!" Mrs. Serena shouted, calling Luna from the kitchen. Luna quickly hurried to the living room where Leth and her mom were. She smiled when she saw Leth holding a small box. Her three-year-old son had become quite adept at rummaging through her closet. Luna gently took the small box from him. She opened it to reveal Leo's letters. Her smile faded, replaced by tears welling up in her eyes.
"Are you okay?" Mrs. Serena asked, concerned.
Luna nodded with a smile.
"I'm going to take Leth for a walk in the park. You stay here and rest, okay?" Mrs Serena seemed to know precisely what Luna needed.
"Thanks, Mom." Luna was deeply grateful. Since she became pregnant with Leth and gave birth to him, and even now, as he turned three, her mothers have been incredibly supportive.
"You know I love you," Mrs. Serena said, carrying Leth out.
Luna's gaze returned to the box. It felt like just yesterday when it all happened. Without realizing it, three years had passed. She had been diagnosed as pregnant shortly after the incident, and Leth had become her most precious gift. Luna remembered when Mark handed her the box after the incident.
"Here, this is for you."
"What is it?" Luna asked, still sobbing.
"Leo wanted me to give you this box. Do you remember you used to send letters to his locker when he got injured and couldn't play soccer anymore? Here are your letters and his responses that never reached you. There are other letters he wrote. You should read them yourself."
It turned out that Leo had indeed responded to her letters. She wrote those letters to encourage Leo and to let him know that his life wasn't over because he couldn't play soccer anymore. Luna smiled to herself as she looked at the letters. She opened the first letter she had sent to Leo.
Hi, Leo.
I'm your number one fan. Watching you play has been my daily routine. But even though you can no longer play, I will remain your number-one fan. I will support you no matter what career you choose. Stay strong, Leo! (From your number one fan)
Under her letter, Leo replied.
Thank you for being my fan. You are Luna, right? I saw you put this letter in my locker. If you're interested, should we be friends? I'd also like to be as good friends as you are with Adam. I enjoyed giving you a ride home that night. I thought everything would change after we talked that night, but time didn't allow me to get to know you better. I was too busy with soccer and lost the chance to become close to you. Even after I got injured and couldn't play anymore, I was too ashamed to face you after confidently telling you I would become a national soccer player. I was so sure of it that I lost both soccer and the chance to get to know you. Don't worry; I won't fall just because I lost my dream. Now, I have a new dream: getting to know you. If you're interested, would you still like to be friends with me even though I've transferred schools?
Luna's tears fell onto the paper. She then reached for another letter. This one was written by Leo after they got married.
If you're reading this letter, it means I'm no longer by your side. Whatever is happening right now, I hope you don't regret it because our meeting was destiny, just like how I fell in love with you the first time when you saved that cat, our reunion at the cafe where you confessed your feelings to me, and even when you lost your memory. None of it was a coincidence, Luna. It was our fate. Because of this illness, my time is short, but I promised you, Luna, that I would keep fighting for you no matter what. Meeting you again and marrying you made me realize how much I couldn't leave you just like that. But if you are reading this, I'm no longer with you. I have only one request for you: live, Luna. Continue your life for me. That alone is enough. Sometimes, you can cry for me, but don't let it harm your health. You know how much I love you, right? Remember that my love for you will never end, no matter what.
"Luna!" Luna looked up, wiping her tears away.
"How many times are you going to read that letter, huh?" Deeja snatched the letter and put it back in the box.
"Give me back the box!"
"No way, Luna. Enough is enough. You shouldn't be reading these letters if they only make you sad. It's been three years, Luna. Are you just going to give up like this? Don't you feel sorry for Leth?"
Luna shook her head.
"I have no intention of giving up. I will stay strong and keep fighting. Leo did so much for me. I can't give up that easily, can I?" Luna wiped her tears away.
"Good. Now, have you seen my husband? Did he come here?"
Luna shook her head.
"No, I haven't seen him. Why?"
"In that case, where is Leth?"
"He went to the park with my mom."
"I'm willing to bet that Mark is with Leth right now. He's always talking about Leth, even at home, to the point where I get jealous. He loves Leth so much because he says Leth looks just like Leo. He's probably obsessed. Wait until I see him next; I'll make him pay!" Deeja sighed heavily.
Luna stifled a laugh.
"Oh, before I forget, Ariel wants to meet you."
At the mention of Ariel, Luna's expression turned distant.
"Why does he want to see me?"
"It's time for you to talk to him, Luna. What happened to Leo affected him deeply too. You know that since the incident, he quit his job and disappeared. Give him a chance to at least apologize to you. I'm sure he never intended for what happened to Leo. Will you meet him?" Deeja pleaded gently.
"I agreed to meet you only because of Deeja," Luna said frankly after meeting Ariel that evening. Ariel kept his head down.
"I'm... I'm sorry," Ariel said, full of guilt.
"I know you and Leo planned to catch the killer yourselves and that he asked you to follow the killer's instructions to bring him there, right?"
Ariel nodded slowly.
"Be honest with me, Ariel. Why, out of all people, did you, Leo's cousin, agree to such a dangerous plan? You knew his condition was getting worse. Why? Did you intentionally bring him there as a real exchange for my life?"
"I..." Ariel's tongue felt tied. He could only look down, overwhelmed with guilt, unable to meet Luna's gaze filled with hatred and coldness.
"Why, Ariel? Why did you leave him alone with the killer? If you had even a shred of sympathy for Leo, you wouldn't have left him there. You should have been there when he got stabbed! You should have prevented all that from happening! But you? You just left him like that. Where is your conscience?" Luna shouted, releasing everything pent up in her chest.
Ariel's tears began to fall.
"I'm sorry..." he whispered.
"You disappeared for three years and now you want to ask for forgiveness? Do you think I will easily forgive you just like that? Why, Ariel? Why did you do that to him? You were the closest person to Leo, the one he trusted. Why?" Luna's lips trembled.
"I'm... I'm sorry. Maybe... you're right. I did conspire with Leo to catch the killer, but deep down, I thought it would be better if he really became the exchange for your life. I thought he was going to die eventually, anyway. He just died sooner than expected. I... I was so blinded by my desire to have you that I lost my sanity and my conscience..."
Luna clenched her fists. If she could, she would have punched Ariel to release all the anger in her soul.
"I'm sorry. I know you can't forgive me for what I did. I... I was actually still there when Leo was stabbed... I..."
"What?"
"I... I saw Leo get stabbed, and I heard him scream in pain, but I just watched... I... I didn't do anything..." Ariel confessed, and Luna's patience finally snapped.
"You're worthless!" Luna threw a flower vase from the table at Ariel, plates, and everything else. The situation became chaotic and drew the attention of other customers. Several restaurant employees ran over, holding Luna back as she struggled to hit Ariel. He remained silent, taking the blows and the thrown objects.
"You're more cruel than the killer, Ariel! You're crueler!" Luna screamed.
"Don't ever show your face to me again, or I will kill you!"
Luna sat alone in the park. It was already nine o'clock at night, but she continued to sit on the swing, lost in her thoughts. Only her tears flowed.
"Luna..."
Luna looked up. Without a word, she returned to her daydreaming.
"What are you doing here? It's so late, Luna. You should go home. Leth must be waiting for you," Clara coaxed.
"Do you know what I heard today? The most unbelievable thing. You know Ariel? The man who disappeared for three years and claimed he did everything to save me. Turns out he's nothing but a coward. He was the one who brought Leo there, Clara. He was willing to sacrifice Leo to save me..."
"Luna..."
"But it's not entirely his fault. It's my fault, too. If I hadn't followed Eddy, Leo wouldn't have ended up like that. It's all my fault..." Luna cried.
"It's not your fault. It was his choice. His choice to save you. You know Leo, he would do anything to ensure your safety."
"I... I miss him, Clara. I miss hearing his voice..."
"You have to be strong, Luna. For Leo and for Leth..." Clara tried to comfort Luna, rubbing her back.
"I'm trying. But why is everything so hard? Every time I close my eyes, I see him; wherever I am, I still see him, but when I try to approach him and touch him, I feel nothing. Am I going crazy, Clara?"
"What are you talking about?"
"I see him. He's even here right now, watching me with tearful eyes. He's looking at me, Clara. Am I crazy?"
"He's... he's here?" Clara suddenly felt a chill.
Luna nodded slowly.
"Over there." Luna pointed toward the slide in front of her.
"He's sitting there, watching me," Luna answered. Her tears flowed as she saw Leo sitting on the slide, smiling at her. Since three years ago, that image had never left her. Leo would watch over her and be by her wherever she went. Luna knew she might have lost her sanity because she missed Leo too much. That's why she never told anyone about what she saw. She was afraid they would take her to see a psychiatrist, and the vision would disappear.
"Are you serious, Luna? Are you lying to me?"
"How do you think I've survived all this time without that vision? That vision is the only thing that lets me release my longing for Leo because I can always see him, even if I can't hear his voice or touch him. Just seeing him is enough for me..."
"This is not right, Luna. Stay here, I'll get the car. Stay here. Don't go anywhere!" Clara said and left Luna.
Luna smiled faintly at Leo, dressed all in white, his face pale but with a constant smile on his lips. He slowly stood up and walked towards her. For a moment, they gazed at each other. Luna's tears flowed harder.
"The time has come, Luna..."
Luna's expression changed upon hearing those words.
"Is it really you?"
Leo nodded. His hand touched Luna's cheekbone.
"The time has come, Luna," Leo repeated.
"No, you can't go anywhere... please don't go anywhere..." Luna shook her head repeatedly. Leo just gave a faint smile and walked away. Luna shook her head. She chased after him.
"Luna, watch out!"
Before Luna could react, she felt like something had hit her body. Her vision blurred until everything turned dark.
Luna slowly opened her eyes. Her body felt sore. She blinked her eyes wide open as her surroundings were blurry. Gradually, the surrounding objects around her became apparent.
"Finally, you are awake!" Luna turned her head to her right. She recognized that voice. Her mother-in-law.
"Thank goodness. You finally awake!" Mrs. Anna said with relief.
"Mom?"
Mrs. Anna nodded with teary eyes. Luna looked to her left.
"Mom?"
"Yes, dear. It's me," Mrs. Serena said, stroking Luna's hair.
"Where am I?" Luna's head throbbed.
"You're in the hospital. Do you remember? You fainted from shock. You almost got hit by a car earlier. Luckily, nothing serious happened," Mrs. Serena replied, wiping away her joyful tears.
Luna stared at the ceiling. She remembered chasing after Leo, and then everything went black. Her tears flowed as she realized she would never see that vision again.
"Luna, it's over. He's awake."
Luna glanced at Mrs. Serena upon hearing those words. Mrs. Serena nodded. Tears streamed down Luna's face. She used her remaining strength to pull out the IV needles from her wrist and ran off the bed.
She stopped right in front of the room door. Taking a deep breath, she opened the door. It felt like a dream seeing that smile again. Luna smiled happily before running to hug him, releasing all her pent-up longing.
