Gray waves lapped at the shore. The gateway to Xebyss loomed in the distance. Avy glanced at Light. He looked utterly hopeless. Oh god, this isn't good. Avy taught. "I'm sorry, Avy," he spoke at last. "Eris is right about me.""No, she's not." she countered back hardly. "You answered her question. You told the truth. That Goddess of bitch was at fault in here.""It wasn't the truth. It was me, trying to pass myself off as someone I'm not."Avy heaved a deep sigh. She hated seeing him look so beaten. "Light, I've seen who you are," she insisted. "You don't need to pretend. Eris trapped you. Why should you or Winter or anyone else have to die?"She really thinks that it wasn't fair. Why should Light suffer for something Eris had done? That bitch! "You need to escape," she urged him. "Get as far away as you can. I'll go back. I'll explain everything to them." She was so sure she could do it. She could convince the others to release Winter without sacrificing Light in his place. It was the only thing that made sense now that the Book was gone for good.Light shook his head helplessly. "No, Avy, listen一," he began. She cut him off, knowing what he was going to say. "I can't watch you die!" she cried."I love you..."Suddenly, like a song in the middle of the endless course, their heartbeat rose up together, and Light looked so stunned. He was shocked; he wasn't able to move even. It was something like an explosion of energy within, and what could he do just to witness himself engrossed with this moment. It was completely new, unaware, and moreover, it was strange and powerful. He held out his hands to her, "But could you love a man who would run away?"Avy plastered a painful smile, "We both knew a man named Light Blackwood would never run away."He knew what to do.♤ • • • ♤The Arcadia arrived back in Cairo just in time. Winter was at the block facing his doom when Light, Avy, and the rest of the ship's crew rushed in."Bet you thought I wouldn't make it, man." Light said lightly.Winter looked relieved. Then looked at Light's empty hands and frowned. "The Book? Where is it?""I did my best," Light said quietly. "But it wasn't enough for that goddamn bitch.""No," Winter cried. "You came back anyway?""How could I do anything else?" Light replied. "My friend."Then he turned and kneeled down, taking Winter's place. Avy watched from nearby with the crew. She buried her face in Echo's fur, their ship's Dog, not wanting to see. She couldn't resist one last look. The sword came towards Light.....And exploded into a million fragments.A cloud suddenly swirled over the city. Shadows twisted together into one substantial dark form. Avy gasped. It was Eris! The Goddess of Chaos and Discord whirled on Light; her eyes were blazing as fire. "How dare you?!" She howled in fury. "Everything was going perfectly, and now you'll do this?!""Wait a freaking minute," Understanding dawned in Light's eyes. "I didn't lie! I came back! That's why you're here. This was all part of your test! I told you the truth!"Eris fumed and clenched her firsts. But the glowing X blazed on her chest, proving that Light was right. She had given her word一, and Light passed her test. Opening her hand, she revealed the Book of Peace and Light. He grabbed it. Then Eris vanished in a swirl of darkness. He opened the Book, and a burst of light came from the pages. Before their eyes, the light washed the destruction from Cairo, leaving it gleaming and magical for what seems like forever.Winter rushed forward. "For what it's worth," he told Light, "I think the council believes you now, Man."Avy laughed with relief. They had succeeded! And all of that because Light followed his honest heart. And now, she knew it was time to follow her own heart. No more boring ambassador duties for her. She knew Winter would definitely understand. In fact, she didn't think he would be sure surprised when she told him. Light had been a good friend to him, and he would be happy that they had come to mean so much to each other.Avy smiled, thinking about how much her feelings toward Light had changed throughout the course of their journey together. They had gone from foes to friends, and then something more. She couldn't wait to head back to the open seas in search of more adventures as part of the Arcadia's crew, with Light by her side.♤ • • • ♤To be continued.
