I ran back to the underground cove; It was pitch dark. My legs were moving cautiously as if they have a brain of themselves. The sounds I could fathom were the crispy sound each footstep of mine made, distant hooting and howling sounds; overpowering all these was the pounding of my heart. I have at least a minute left.
I kept moving, with the lurking fear if I can reach Winter's place before the time runs out. My chest upbeated so fast, such melancholy dark like a potentially hungry animal.
Seconds passed, and all of a sudden, I found myself inside the arena again. As I peek through the first basement, I saw Winter brushing his hair back, probably out of frustration. My black boots started dipping in as I rushed to his spot and tossed the paper to his front.
"What一" I cut him off like what he did to me earlier. Panting, I revealed words for him, "Light said that's the code."
"He probably stole this from Madame Evee's office. I remember him saying, some codes are hidden there. Thanks."
"Don't thank me yet; please focus on hacking that goddamn game. We need to rescue other survivors before the countdown reached to zero."
While Winter was in the process of hacking the game一, he was editing the game's source code; I can't help but to glance nervously at the glowing red clock above. I broke into cold sweats. My heart pounded ever so fast, and my hand began to feel clammy against my bouncing knee. I began to pace back and forth, stomping my feet impatiently at each end of the room. The very act of watching him was threatening my heart to burst forth from my ribcage.
Thirty seconds left. Shit. Shit. Shit.
"Winter, will that took much longer? Can't you at least speed up? Even just a bit?"
"I'm trying, Avy. I'm fuckin' trying. Could you just please calm your ass in there?"
10 seconds. How can I calm down? My knees felt weak, and I descended to the cold ground. Covering my ears, I pursed my lips and shut my eyes out. This is probably my end.
"Five seconds till the forced destruction mode activate. Four... three..."
"Two..."
"One..."
A loud bang echoed in unison to a tethering sound of the machine.
I lifted my head up, and I saw Winter on the game monitor, breathing heavily. He successfully hacked the game. But then, where did the loud bang came from? It was so loud that I didn't even hear the room exploded itself as a distinct sound; instead, we listened to a bell-like ringing as the sound rounded around the room I was in.
We obviously didn't feel pain. Or impact. Instead, it was more like massive heat. Which rapidly turned into a sort of throbbing tingling numbness. I knew something had happened, but my mind hadn't entirely caught up with it.
"Where's Light?"
His words woke me up from confusion. I staggered to ascend on my knees, now aware of what might happen. My chinky eyes widened as I rushed back outside. That wasn't a gun bang, isn't it? No. No. It can't be.
I felt Winter followed me, and together, we ran outside the underground dome. As the dark school grounds of BWH greeted me, I saw two people standing in the very middle一, Madame Evee and Light.
They were intensely staring at each other, and when I was about to take a step forward towards them, Light leveled the revolver at Madame Evee's chest. His fingers were quaking as If the cold metal of death grows increasingly heavy with each passing second. He spoke, his voice as darker and broader than the ground, "You killed my father, you changed the great school we founded to a realm of your wicked desires, you caged me inside that hell-bound office for years, and now... all you can say was a mere... sorry?"
Light's face only grew grimmer. His grip on the gun in was unwavering. Speaking into the cold breaking dawn air with a cutting tone, he added, "Sorry too, but I can't accept your apologies."
"Light! She has a g一."
With a breath and a blink of an eye, I heard a twitch on the trigger. The shot was muffled, as though the sound traveled through seawater to our ears. I could only watch, still, as Madame Evee had just pulled her gun's trigger much faster than Light did. A flash and a horrendous noise tore through the sides of my ears. The noises of gunfire went into the back of my mind to a place of ignorance, and I charged over the edge bayonet up as rounds whizzed past my head.
"Noo!"
Another gunshot echoed deafeningly in the confined premises of the forest grounds, and I saw the Madame Evee stagger and fall, clutching her neck.
And before I knew it, Light's body fell to the ground, too; the warmth of life was stolen by the cold embrace of BWH's dark and eerie atmosphere. The impact of his limp body was synced with the wails of ours, who were watching closely. I sprinted over, forgetting the fatigue of my own swaying legs from the earlier battle, desperate to find any remaining flickers of life in Light's body, but...
I was met with cold silence.
"Light, please... don't do this..." My voice terribly cracked, as I couldn't hold the heartbreak any longer. I fell to the muddy ground in a disheveled heap as my grief poured out in a flood of uncontrollable tears.
"H-hey... don't cry..." Light's cold bloody hands found their way through my cheeks. He tried to wipe and hold my face as he smiled faintly. I could see the gleaming spark of pain around his eyes— his eyes bleeding in pain, his eyes which seemed to sparkle ever so slightly despite the dullness of the Blackwood High's dark premises. Even the corners of his mouth seemed to fight against his typically cold expression, betraying how much pain he really felt.
"Fuck it, I will call help," Winter said as he passed me down and rushed outside the vast agape gate.
I turned to Light again, "Hold on, please. Hold on to me. Don't go..."
"I'm sorry..."
With his words, I broke down. A tightening feeling of my throat and a short intake of breath embraced my chest. My lips trembled as I hush him up, shaking my head from side to side. Don't say sorry... It was so painful to see him like this. All I could do was embrace him and let the torrent of his blood soak through my shirt.
I could feel him clench hir fists, not knowing whether to be mad or to give up hope altogether. I could hear him silently screaming as he tried to fight the pain. I ran my fingers through his hair, time and time again, in an attempt to calm the silent war within his mind, "It's okay, Light. Winter will call help. You'll be okay. Don't close your eyes, please..."
"I'm... happy to be with you on this game, babe. Thank you for coming into my life and for... making me see the light in the dark realms of BWH."
I shake my head, again and again, denying the harsh fact that he seems to be saying his final words. A drop of tears trickled down his eyes. "Don't. Please, Light Blackwood. Don't say that. Don't say goodbye. You're going to be alright. Okay?"
"No, Avy. Listen to me... this is not a goodbye. There's no goodbye for us. You and I will meet again when we're least expecting it. One day in some far-off place, I-I will recognize your face, your eyes, your voice... I'm not saying goodbye, babe. Because damn, I believe... you and I will meet again. I just wish that in another life, I wish to live not fuckin' like this again. Yet, I wish to live and embark on a journey with you again, be your robber, be your man, be your light and be your hope... even if it costs me my life."
"No. No. Please, stay awake..."
"I love you. Let the light shine upon us again."
We almost had it. Light and I almost escaped the darkness... together.
But then, after saying those words, after saying he won't go, after saying this wasn't a goodbye...
I had never seen the gleam of his cold yet shinning eyes again. His body fell to the ground, blood rushing out of his open gunshot wounds, tainting the once pristine setting.
Darkness swallowed me from within, as I catch upon his last smile and teardrop. He left me. My Light... left me.
