Chapter 4

The wind was blowing mildly in Sosa region of Uguru. Men and women were seen walking up and down for economic purposes and other issues of concern. Market women were singing the usual songs, calling their potential customers. Captivating expressions were used to persuade people to buy from them. There was no much traffic in Sosa region because it was a small town and didn’t have industries. Most of the people who lived there were farmers, petty traders, teachers, civil servants, artisans and a host of others.
Thieves, pilferers, louts and other criminal elements always had their field day in Sosa region. Often times, they got away with the crimes committed because of the laxity of security system of the region and sleeping state machinery of justice.
On this fateful day, a lady was walking up Kreku Street when some pickpockets stole from her. A young man watching from a distance went after the boys, grabbed their throats and called the attention of the unsuspecting lady.
“Good afternoon, ma’am!” greeted Robin.
“Afternoon, sir!” How may I be of help to you?” asked Linda.
“Well, I want you to please do me a favour by checking your pocket”, requested Robin.
“For what! Who are you people? I never knew you!”
“Calm down, ma’am. I mean no harm. Do what I asked you to do, please!” pleaded Robin.
Linda obliged. Behold, her money was nowhere to be found.
“You stole my money, thief!” said Linda.
“Ma’am, would you please calm down and hear me out?” Pleaded Robin. At this time, crowd had gathered to have a clue of what was playing out between the two people.
“Okay, I am all ears. Who stole my money?”
“Fine! These young men did. They stole your money I was watching at a distance. So, I decided to catch them and bring them to you”, replied Robin.
“Thank you very much, young man! You have no idea how much what you did means to me. I am very sorry for the way I treated you earlier. Do you think you can forgive me?” asked Linda, feeling sober now.
Handling over the money to her, “Sure I will. But learn how to be polite to people, most especially strangers. You never can tell if they are your angels”, said Robin as he handed the two men to a policeman in the market.
The crowd dispersed. Linda felt ashamed for how she had treated Robin.
“I am Linda. May I meet you?”
“Sure! I am Robin”.
“Nice meeting you. I guess you are a gentleman. I think I like you. Do you think we can be friends?
“Yes! I would really love that. You are such a charming woman, though sounding very harsh the other time”.
“Please, forgive me for how I acted. I think I overreacted. I promise it will never happen in the nearest future. Here is my phone number. Call me anytime. Goodbye!” said Linda.
“Goodbye!” replied Robin. He was super excited. He felt like someone who had just won a lottery. He walked shoulder high everywhere he went ever since. He had found gold. The achievement of the day was a feather to his cap. He had always looked for opportunities to get close to the stunning young lady but he could not because there were walls between them – status, level of education, exposure and many more. But those walls had been broken and a bridge erected to crossover to the other side of life through the lady. He went everywhere ever since with aura of pride and confidence in his new find.
Friends and family noticed how he walked everywhere with accustomed ease. His dressing style changed. In fact, his crude manner of approach gave way to polite and acceptable ways of behaving as it is in saner and orderly climes. Everyone was curious to know what had come over him.
Some people wondered if he had gone insane but he never ceased to tell whoever cared to listen that he had found a new life, new beginning as a result of the transformation he went through in his encounter with an angel.
One day, he put a call to Linda. The latter responded.
“Hello, is that Linda?”
“Yes, I am! Who are you?” asked Linda.
“I am Robin! The young ….”
Robert? My ex-boyfriend? Get away right now! Useless man!” She immediately deleted the number from her phone.
Robin broke down in tears. As he was walking home absentmindedly, he was knocked down by a vehicle causing him to faint. He was rushed to a hospital nearby. Everyone gathered to know what had happened to him.
After some minutes, he woke up, saying, “Where is she? I must see her today!”
“Who are you referring to?” Asked one of his friends.
“Are you crazy? Don’t you know Linda?

“Get her here now before I lose my temper”, shouted Robin in the hospital.
Nurses and doctors on duty ran to see what it was. They tried to calm him down but could not be pacified.
One of the patients came out to also see what was happening. Lo and behold, it was Linda. She rushed to embrace him.
“Robin, what are you doing here?”
“Linda, I should be asking you the same question”, said Robin.
“I came here for my medical check-up. Why are you here? What is the matter with you?” asked the curious lady.
“I called you and you shut me up, taking me for your ex boyfriend Robert,” said the man weeping profusely.
“Oh, I am very sorry, my dear! I had no idea. I thought I heard Robert! I am very sorry once again but I am still worried. What brought you here?” asked Linda again.
“As I was walking home, devastated; I was knocked down by a vehicle, I became unconscious and was rushed here by friends and well-wishers”, said Robin.
“I deeply regret my action. I am very sorry for how I treated you the second time. Please, pardon me,” pleaded Linda while doctors, nurses and others looked on, stuck for words.
The two – Linda and Robin embraced each other so much that everyone was embarrassed and started leaving one after the other. It was indeed obvious that that the cord of love had been struck between them and nothing whatsoever could break the bond. New life sprung, new ideas and mindsets birthed.
