Chapter 14

Tables truly do turn. The predator of the present moment might turn out to be the next prey. The most vulnerable prey might be the next predator. Should we conclude that that is the design of the world? Should we say predators and preys change positions? Some would argue that such a change occurs once in a blue moon and would therefore be unsafe to conclude or make a tradition out of such. It happens that the seeming weaker vessel of today might become the most powerful tomorrow. The rich of today might be poor tomorrow if caution and discipline to maintain and keep adding to their wealth are absent. The poor on the other hand will never remain in the gutter if they put in more effort, smartness and tap into available opportunities to grow and make impact. That’s why it is not advisable to look down on anybody.
The above was true in the case of Robin and Linda. The latter was rich and influential with the former at her beck and call. She used to hold Robin to ransom. She maltreated him so much that he felt like an arse-hole. But that had become a story and history as Robin now called the shots. However, he respected Linda. Linda loved him more than ever before.
One day, Linda ran into one of her old time friends named Kate. It was Kate’s birthday. So, she decided to paint the town red. She persuaded Linda to come with her and two other friends in her car. She convinced her that it would be fun and strengthen their bond. Linda was reluctant at first, wondering what excuse she would give to Robin. She would have loved to call and inform him of the new development but her phone was dead. She would have used Kate’s phone to call Robin but unfortunately for her, she didn’t know his new phone number off hand. Then, she gave in and followed Kate and her friends to different places, eating, indulging in the intake of alcohol. Before she knew what was happening, she was drunk. This was because she was not used to taking much alcohol. Late in the night, Kate dropped her off very close to her house. She drove off afterwards while Linda trod awkwardly home. Getting home, she fell on the floor of their sitting room, managed to stand up. She started vomiting and later stopped vomiting. Robin came out from their room, asking her what made her come home late.
“Why are you late, Linda? Where have you been? I was worried about you. I called your number but didn’t hear anything from you. Why did you do this to me, Linda? What is wrong with you?” asked Robin, looking worried.
Slapping Robin, she said, “Get out of here! Why are you worried about me? Am I a kid?” asked Linda, slapping him the second time.
Annoyed, Robin slapped her four times.
“Don’t you every try that with me anymore,” warned Robin.
“You slapped me?” shouted Linda.
“Yes, I did. I will slap you over and over again if you mess up. When will you stop this nonsense?” asked Robin.
The slapping seemed to make her come to her senses. Her eyes that appeared partially blind could now see clearly. Robin led her to the bathroom, removed her clothes and bathed her. Then, he took her to their bedroom where she covered her with a blanket. He returned to the sitting room to clean up the mess. He then went to sleep beside her.
In the morning of the following day, he went to prepare tea for Linda. The tea was hot. He didn’t allow their cook to do it for him. He took the tea to the bedside, waking up Linda to take it. She woke up and was served the tea. She smiled and hugged Robin.
“I am very sorry for what happened last night. One of my friends celebrating her birthday yesterday got me drunk. I drank to stupor. I was unconscious. I never knew what I was doing until you slapped me. Please, forgive me. I would have called you but my phone was dead. I would have used Kate’s phone but I don’t know your new phone number off hand,” revealed Linda.
I never meant to slap you. You first slapped me. In fact, you did so twice,” revealed Robin.
“Really? I never knew I did that. Please, pardon me,” pleaded Linda again.
“I should really ask you for forgiveness. I shouldn’t have raised my hands against you. Please, forgive me. I love you,” said Robin.
“I have forgiven you. I want you to know that I love you more,” expressed Linda.
“I have a surprise for you, Linda,” revealed Robin.
“Surprise?”

“Yes! Surprise! Please, shut your eyes,” begged Robin, bringing out a piece of paper.
“What is it, my love?” asked Linda.
“Here you go,” replied Robin handing her the result of the pregnancy test she did few days ago.
“No! It is not true! Tell me it is not true. You mean I am carrying your baby?” asked excitedly.
“Yeah, Love! You are carrying my baby. I am going to be a father very soon. In fact, you are carrying a baby boy.”
“Oh, my God!” exclaimed Linda. The goodnews filtered through the ears of the domestic servants, Richard and Jennifer who had now become part and parcel of the family. They all rushed to the room of the excited couple. With hearts filled with joy, they all raised their voices in a symphony of praises to God.
