Chapter 12

A kid lived in a small town of Gordon State. He was an orphan. He worked very hard to fend for himself. His father built a house but the father’s family members sent him and his sister out of the house and took possession of it. So, he lived in the streets, doing menial jobs to keep body and soul together. Most children of his age and in his condition took to begging, stealing and defrauding other people in order to survive. But Kule was unique. Many adults trusted him a lot, though this made children of his age to hate him with passion.
One day, the children he lived with in a wooden apartment did all they could to soil his image. They put some money inside his bag. The money belonged to the owner of the apartment. When the latter was looking for his money, he asked everyone. They all denied seeing it. So, he decided to check everyone’s baggage.
“Bring out your baggage, kids” ordered the man.
“I didn’t steal your money!” expressed Kule with boldness like every other child.
“I know you couldn’t have done such a silly thing. But to ensure fair play, I have to,” said Mr. Bulanga.
“Okay, sir!” replied Kule.
The man, Mr. Bulanga, went ahead to empty every one’s bag. He was very disappointed when he found the money in Kule’s bag.
“You disappointed me, Kule! What is this?” thundered the man.
Weeping, “I don’t understand how it got there, sir. There must be some mix-up somewhere. This must be a set-up. Please, believe you me, I didn’t steal your money. I will never do that. You could recollect I left here very early yesterday and returned late last night,” said Kule.
The man was silent, not knowing what to do. He had given huge sum of money to Kule before to keep for him without the knowledge of other children. When he requested for the money, it was given back to him the way it was neatly arranged before being given to Kule.
One of the kids named Gagna stepped forward.
“I will confess,” said Gagna.
“Confess what?” asked Mr. Bulanga.
“It was a set-up,” revealed Gagna.
“Really?” questioned Mr. Bulanga.
“Yes!” confirmed Juga, one of the kids.
“We all conspired against him because you love him more than every one of us,” revealed Mula, another boy.
“So, this is all your game plan to make an innocent kid suffer. Why won’t I love him? He is loyal, hardworking and honest. For me to love you all, you must possess the rare qualities possessed by him. Stop stealing! Work hard the way he does,” advised Mr. Bulanga.
“We are very sorry, sir! Please, forgive us,” pleaded the kids.
“Don’t beg me,” fired Mr. Bulanga.
“Beg Kule! You have really offended him,” said the man.
The kids went to Kule to beg him for forgiveness. He forgave them and life continued again with slight changes in the behavior of the children.
Some weeks later, Kule was very ill. So, he couldn’t go out. Every other child had gone out and the owner of the wooden apartment. One of the boys later came home to give him food and went back to work. After he had eaten his food and taken his drugs, he began to regain his strength. So, he decided to go outside to receive fresh air. He took a stroll in the community, acknowledging and responding to greetings from the neighbours. Few minutes later, he needed to urinate, so he rushed to the backyard of a building. It was an old building - a very dirty one. The stench from the backyard was enough to send one to one’s early grave. There was a channel at the backyard where water collected and was carried away to its unknown destination. Kule was urinating in the channel when he heard the mewing of a feline. After urinating, he traced where the mewing was coming from. He got to where it was. He saw the feline. It had grown emaciated, denied food and water for days by its owner as a way of punishing it for not coming home for two days. It was said to be a common practice for the poor and destitute in Uguru to keep a feline as a pet. Some claimed the rich also kept pet in Uguru, dismissing that keeping the pet was not just done by the poor. Both the rich and the poor did keep it as long as it appealed to them. Kule felt bad for the feline. So, he decided to let it out of its cage. The feline ran away, probably forever. Kule was glad for being the one that set the pet free. He was about to leave when the owner of the feline arrived. He was shocked to see Kule. So, he challenged him as follows:
“What are you doing near my cage?”
“Good afternoon, sir!” replied the boy.
“Answer my question!” thundered the man.
“I saw a feline here in pain. So, I decided to let her out. I guess her owner has been maltreating her for a long time,” said the kid.
“And how is that your business, boy? You let out my pet? How dare you?” shouted Durag as he slapped the boy three times.
“You will pay dearly for your stupid action,” threatened the man.
“Pardon me! I felt bad for seeing the feline in such a bad condition. That was why I decided to let her out. Please, forgive me!” pleaded the kid.
“I have no mercy in my veins. I will kill you, useless boy,” threatened the man again as he brought out his belt and started flogging Kule. The boy pleaded for mercy to no avail.
Two men appeared and asked the man to stop flogging the boy.
“Who are you?” asked Durag in annoyance.
“We are officials from the Ministry of Animal Care,” said one of the officials.
“I see!” said Durag.
“Are you Durag? Asked Mr. Joli, one of the officials.

“Yes! How may I be of help to you?” asked Durag.
“You have been alleged of maltreating your pet and even kids. We just confirmed one of the allegations,” said Mr. Mungo.
“Boy, why did he flog you?” asked Mr. Joli. Durag was making some gestures to Kule to lie to the officials. He would have loved to save Durag’s head but felt the man didn’t deserve it. So, he decided to tell the officials everything so as to serve as deterrent to other people who maltreated their pets and fellow humans out there.
“He flogged me because I let out his feline which had been denied food and water for some days,” said Kule.
“Is that true, Durag?” asked Mr. Mungo.
“Em… em… em…,” babbling Durag.
He wanted to fight with the men but was overpowered and arrested by a policeman who came with them. He had hidden somewhere.
They handcuffed Durag and put him in their vehicle. They were taking him away for prosecution.
Kule thanked the men for saving him. He whispered something into Mr. Joli’s ear. The officials left.
Two weeks later, Mr. Joli and other officials followed Kule and his elder sister to their father’s house. They had been separated for a long time. This was due to the death of their father. Their mother died after giving birth to Kule. The elder sister of Kule was just 18 years old while Kule was just 12 years old.
The officials from the Ministry of Animal Care informed their colleagues in the Ministry of Justice about the plights of Kule and his sister. First, the policemen from the Ministry of Justice arrested the family members who threw Kule and his sister out of the house. The wicked family members were charged to court. When the court asked them to produce the documents bearing their names, establishing them as the rightful owners of the property they had occupied for few years. None of them could but Kule was able to do so to the disappointment of the wicked fellows and to the delight of the court.
In light of that, the court forbade their occupancy of the property, asked them to pay the fine of humongous sum of money to the kids or risk a jail term of three years. In the meantime, they were to be in police custody till they or two sureties of unquestionable character were able to pay the fine stipulated to be paid within two weeks without which they would face their jail terms.
It was victory for Kule and his sister. They thanked all the officials involved in the case. They later went to take possession of the property and lived happily hereafter.
