Chapter 27: The Rival Doesn’t Seem Too Threatening

Vũ Phi Toàn stared intently at the two people in front of him. Although Hoàng Hải Vân was standing there in flesh and blood, something about her felt off. Besides, just a few days ago, she had met this kid—there was no way she could have become his girlfriend that quickly. He immediately asked:
"Hải Vân, how long have you known this guy?"
Hoàng Hải Vân silently spread her fingers and started counting. It was only now that she realized—counting even the time she had been unconscious—it hadn’t even been ten days. And yet, in that short time, she had gone through everything with this guy from A to Z. She couldn’t even comprehend what was happening to her anymore. It was madness.
Trần Ngọc Linh, currently in Hoàng Hải Vân’s body, replied:
"Eight days."
Vũ Phi Toàn quickly stepped closer, pressing for answers:
"I’ve known you for two years! And in just eight days, you became his girlfriend? You once told me you wanted to be with me!"
Trần Ngọc Linh, in Hoàng Hải Vân’s body, instinctively stepped back to keep some distance. By now, he had figured out that the person Hoàng Hải Vân had mentioned in the past—the one she had feelings for—was this man standing before them.
Although this love rival was flawless in every way, Trần Ngọc Linh had already won. A smug smirk flickered across his face. Two years, and this guy had accomplished nothing, while he had sealed the deal in just a few days.
With a playful whine, he clung to Hoàng Hải Vân’s arm:
"Babe, let’s go. I’m scared."
Hoàng Hải Vân nearly gagged. Was this brat deliberately provoking Vũ Phi Toàn? When she got her body back, how on earth was she supposed to explain all this?
But the longer they stayed, the more antics this brat would pull, making the situation even more irreparable. So, she grabbed his hand and pulled him away.
Vũ Phi Toàn stood frozen, watching them leave.
As Hoàng Hải Vân glanced back at his lonely figure, an ache filled her chest. She recalled how, in the past, she had been so focused on her studies—no parties, no romance, no friends. She had even earned the nickname "Ice Queen." She never cared about anyone because she was always at the top of her class.
It wasn’t until she started working that she was overwhelmed by the presence of Vũ Phi Toàn. The light he radiated was too intense, like the sun—nothing like the moon. He often came to retrieve autopsy reports from her, yet despite standing in front of a beauty like her, he never once showed interest.
He was truly someone who put ideals above all else.
Since he never made the first move, she had to be the one to take the initiative. But no matter what she did, he never paid her any attention. At one point, she even doubted whether she was truly beautiful. At another, she suspected that Vũ Phi Toàn simply wasn’t interested in women.
It wasn’t until she had a near-death experience that she realized Vũ Phi Toàn did care about her. He just loved his work more. That’s why, for two years, he never once admitted he liked her. Or maybe… it wasn’t until she was gone that he realized his feelings for her.
After they had walked far enough, Hoàng Hải Vân pulled her hand away from Trần Ngọc Linh’s grip and said:
"You’ve gone too far. What was the point of all that?"
Trần Ngọc Linh took the opportunity to probe:
"So, the person you mentioned before, the one in your heart… it was him?"
Without hesitation, Hoàng Hải Vân nodded:
"That’s right. What does it have to do with you?"
Trần Ngọc Linh didn’t seem too interested but still asked:
"You knew him for two whole years?"
Finding him annoyingly persistent, Hoàng Hải Vân snapped:
"That’s right. I’ve been working for two years. I’m five years older than you."
Graduating as a doctor at 21 was already an incredible achievement. She had buried herself in books throughout her school years, and with the advantage of skipping a grade, she had managed to accomplish it. But she hadn’t expected this brat to be even more outstanding—he had already graduated from RMIT at 18.
She emphasized their age gap to change the subject, but he still wouldn’t let it go.
"Two years versus eight days… Two years versus eight days…"
Hearing him repeat those words made her face burn with embarrassment. Why did he keep stressing "eight days" like that?
Suddenly, he turned to her and asked:
"So… have you ever kissed him?"
Hoàng Hải Vân was so infuriated by his relentless embarrassing questions that she grabbed him by the collar.
"Are you crazy?! I’ve never kissed anyone—only you!"
The moment she said it, her face turned scorching red.
But instead of being scolded, the brat seemed completely delighted by her words. He casually put on his mask and continued walking leisurely—was he even whistling?
Thinking back, after spending so much time with Vũ Phi Toàn, she had never even heard a single compliment from him. That had made her feel insecure. Yet this brat had praised her face the very first time they met. The second time, he even said her body was more beautiful than her face.
He was the type who said exactly what was on his mind—blunt and direct.
And most importantly, he had risked his life to save her when she was on the brink of death.
Hoàng Hải Vân smiled, gazing up at the clear blue sky.
