After fixing their car, Callisto went back inside the living room and found his sister sitting on the upholstered couch, watching SpongeBob on the television. Callisto sat down beside her, although he didn't like the show because it was too childish for him, but he wished to become a child again, someone who didn't care about anything. "It was the beautiful woman," Ruth said. "A beautiful woman?" Callisto asked in a curious tone, interested to know his sister's story. "What about her?" "She's Estrella, and it was she who gave me this power to heal wounds," Ruth replied. Callisto wondered who this woman named Estrella was. He hadn't heard that name before. It seemed like his sister knew something he didn't know about. She appeared more mysterious in his eyes. "Are you sure about that?" Callisto asked. "Pretty sure. She told me to be good and help those people who are in pain," Ruth replied. Callisto looked directly at Ruth's eyes to know if she wasn't lying. "When did you meet her?" "She showed up to me on our first day here," Ruth replied. "That's four days," Callisto said, as if he were investigating. "Can you describe what she looks like? And why didn't you tell Mom, Dad, and me?" "I'm sorry, brother, I didn't mean to hide this, but Estrella will be angry if I tell you about her. She's strong, powerful, and scary," Ruth said in a worried tone. "Don't be afraid, Ruth. She won't hurt you, or at least I won't let her." Callisto hugged his sister. "Just tell me what she looks like. I won't tell Mom and Dad about this." "And what are you not going to tell us?" Dorothy asked as she and her husband entered the room and walked towards their children, who looked serious. "Nothing, Mom. We're just watching TV," Callisto replied. "How many times do I have to tell you not to play with your younger sister? You should be a mature son and play with those people outside who are the same age as you?" Dorothy said, knowing that Callisto was lying. "Come on, Dorothy, don't let your anger go to your son," Sebastian said, holding his wife's waist. Then he brought her inside their bedroom so that she wouldn't say anything that could upset their son. Callisto thought that perhaps his mother was just stressed with whatever was going on recently, and that wasn't enough reason to hate her. He stood up and was about to leave, but his younger sister stopped him. "Where are you going, brother?" Ruth asked, holding the tip of Callisto's shirt and slightly shaking it as if she didn't really want him to leave. "Sorry, Ruth, but it's something important," Callisto replied. Ruth felt sad as her brother insisted on going despite his promise that he wouldn't leave again, but she was so little and weak to stop him, although she was just worried about what could happen to him again if he met those gangsters in the street. Ruth turned off the television and went towards his parents' bedroom. It was her habit to eavesdrop on their conversation to know what was going on. She saw them through the narrow hole in the door; they were sitting on their bed. It was in the farm, Dorothy remembered, where they saw the little girl falling from the tree. That was almost impossible, but because she looked so cute, like an angel, they didn't hesitate to raise her. Dorothy felt guilty for lying again to her son, but she only did that for him not to think about it too much. They just wanted Ruth to have a normal life, like a normal girl. "What we did was the right thing," Sebastian said. "We don't know what could have happened to her if we hadn't raised her with our son." "Yup, and I must not talk about that; it'll just give you a headache," Dorothy said. Dorothy made her husband lie down on their bed, and she began massaging his head, chest, abdomen, and so on. Ruth didn't mind; instead, she went into her bedroom. As she opened the door, Ruth felt someone's presence by the wide-open window. The cold air was saying, "Don't mind everyone; always remember and follow what I told you if you want to stay longer in that body. Now, go and stop them from doing what they are doing." So, as the wind demanded, Ruth got out of her bedroom and continued walking towards her parents' room. She opened the door, and the thing that must not be described was exposed on her front. Don't they love her anymore? She thought. Why are they making another baby? Dorothy's and Sebastian's faces showed an expression of surprise when they heard the door creak and Ruth glimpse through it. They were stuck for a while and eventually stopped what they were doing, sprang out of their bed, and got themselves dressed. "Yes, baby girl?" Sebastian asked. "Where's your brother?" "He told me that he'd be going to his friend's house," Ruth replied. Dorothy got out of their bedroom and continued walking towards the kitchen, and so did Sebastian and Ruth, who followed her. They helped prepare the food, thinking that Callisto would be back before dinner. The silhouettes of houses and the silence of a cold night didn't stop Callisto from going to Stalin's house. He was standing in front of her house, and something was telling him to get closer. He knocked several times on the wooden door, but no one answered. As Callisto looked up, he saw the window open and saw a beautiful girl gazing right at him. Her eyes were sparkling in the dark, her hair was tied, and her dress, although it was worn, suits her perfectly. "Who is she?" Callisto screamed in his mind. In the following minutes, Callisto and the girl were staring at each other, without saying anything and without even making any noise, as if they could understand each other's silence. Callisto was freed from mesmerization and wondered what he was doing there. "I have to go home now; my parents must be looking for me already," Callisto thought and walked away. The girl kept looking at him, curious who that boy was. She went to her bed and lay down. There was something interesting about that boy, although he wasn't that handsome, but he was cute. Suddenly, the door thudded, and her mother got inside. The woman had gotten used to her daughter's mysterious condition. At first, she couldn't believe it either, that her daughter transformed into an ugly girl during daylight, and her real appearance came out at night, but with certain conditions, as she couldn't go out with her real face. The woman couldn't accept that girl she became, believing that her only child would never be ugly, and that was the reason why she always beat her. "Thank you, Mother," Stalin said while her mother was putting food on the table beside her bed. "I know that you're tired, but thank you for not giving up on me." Tears were forming inside her beautiful eyes and streamed down her cheeks. "Good to know that you noticed your mother's sacrifices. But although I'm tired of this, going in and out, cooking food for you, and doing household chores alone, I need to fulfill my responsibilities as your mother," the woman said. "Thanks, Mother." Stalin tried to hug her mother, but she shunned it as if she didn't like drama. "You should eat your food first. It's not time to be weak and either act like everything is just fine or—" Her voice gradually faded as she walked out of the room. Stalin wiped the tears that had diffused on her face with her rugged dress. Then she devoured the fried chicken that was innocently perched on the plate without using a spoon or a fork, but with her dirty hands. She ate as if she were so hungry, and after that, she took a nap. The next day, Stalin woke up, but her transformation was earlier than usual. She couldn't recall most of the things that happened last night, except for the way that boy stares at her, his eyes telling her something she couldn't quite comprehend.
