Chapter 55 The Shattering

The voice echoed through the chamber, reverberating off the jagged walls, sending a ripple of cold dread through Elara's spine. It was a voice she knew, but she could not place it. It felt too familiar, like a part of her own soul whispering to her from the depths of her being.
"I am you."
The words were spoken with a strange, cold finality, as though the Abyss itself had claimed her as its own. Elara stumbled back, her heart hammering in her chest, as the ground trembled beneath her feet. Kael’s grip tightened on her arm, his eyes wide with concern, but there was no time to explain.
“Elara, we need to move. Now!” he urged, but her legs felt like lead, her body frozen in place by the haunting words.
Before she could react, the shadows surged from the altar, racing toward them with terrifying speed. The walls seemed to close in, as if the cavern itself was a living thing, closing them off from any escape. The air was thick with an oppressive weight, and Elara could feel the magic of the Abyss swirling around her like a storm, pushing against her very essence.
“ No, ” she whispered, her voice barely audible above the roar of the dark energy. “I am not… I’m not a part of this.”
But the Abyss was relentless. The shadowy tendrils lashed out, wrapping around her like chains, pulling her toward the altar. It felt as though her very soul was being ripped from her body, her magic no match for the overwhelming pull of the darkness.
“Elara!” Kael shouted, his face etched with pain as he fought against the shadows pulling them apart. But they were too strong, too consuming. His power, once a steady force beside hers, was now being swallowed whole by the Abyss.
For a moment, she saw his face—so close, so desperate—and her heart twisted in anguish. She couldn’t let him be consumed, too. She couldn’t let him face the same fate she was about to face.
“Elara, fight!” Kael’s voice broke through her panicked thoughts, filled with determination and a quiet plea. His hand was outstretched toward her, reaching through the swirling dark magic that separated them, but his touch felt so far away.
And then, in the deepest part of her heart, something stirred—an ancient power, a spark of light long buried. The bond between them, forged through blood and magic, flared to life, brighter and more powerful than anything she had ever known.
It was the light she had carried within her all her life, the light that connected her to Kael, to the kingdom, to everything she had ever fought for. It was not just the magic of a sorceress, nor the power of the Abyss—it was something else, something deeper, something unshakable.
With a roar of defiance, Elara reached for Kael’s hand, pulling herself free from the shadows’ grasp. Her magic flared, a brilliant explosion of energy that ripped through the Abyss’s dark tendrils like paper. The cavern itself seemed to shudder with the intensity of her power, the walls cracking and groaning as if the very fabric of reality was being torn apart.
“ Together, ” Elara shouted, her voice ringing with power. “We end this!”
Kael’s hand found hers, their fingers locking together, and in that moment, everything changed. Their magic surged, wild and untamed, as their souls merged, their powers becoming one. The light they created was blinding, a pure force that pushed back the Abyss with a single, overwhelming pulse.
But the darkness did not go down without a fight. With a deafening roar, the shadows swelled, coiling around them with an intensity that shook the cavern to its core. The ground beneath their feet cracked and split open as the Abyss fought for control, trying to pull them back into its depths.
“Elara!” Kael’s voice was strained, filled with desperation. “We’re not done yet. We have to destroy the heart!”
She nodded, her breath ragged, but her resolve unshaken. Together, they were stronger than the Abyss. They had to be.
With a cry of fury, Elara channeled the last of her magic, pouring everything she had into the light that now consumed the cavern. The shadows howled in protest, but they couldn’t hold back the force of her power. Slowly, agonizingly, the walls of the cavern began to crumble, the darkness retreating in the face of their combined will.
And then, with a final burst of energy, the stone altar shattered. The runes that had pulsed with dark magic crumbled to dust, and the sickly glow that had filled the chamber faded into nothingness.
But just as the Abyss seemed to retreat, Elara felt a cold, familiar pressure closing in on her chest. A whisper of shadow, lingering, unseen.
 "It’s not over."
Before she could react, a shadow lunged from the ruins of the altar, streaking toward her with terrifying speed. It was a shape, twisted and dark, its form shifting as if it was both a part of her and something entirely different.
“Elara!” Kael shouted, but the darkness was faster.
The shadow engulfed her, swallowing her whole.
And everything went black.
---
When Elara opened her eyes, the world around her had changed.
She was no longer in the cavern. Instead, she was standing in the middle of an endless void, a black expanse stretching out in all directions. There was no ground beneath her feet, no sky above her head—just a hollow, suffocating emptiness.
“Elara…”
The voice was soft, familiar, yet hollow. She spun around, heart pounding, only to find herself face to face with a figure shrouded in shadow. The figure was tall, its features indistinct, but there was something about its presence that sent a chill down her spine.
“No,” Elara whispered, her heart racing. “No, this can’t be real.”
But the figure stepped forward, its shape becoming clearer, more defined. And then, the darkness receded just enough for Elara to see the figure’s face.
Her own face.
“Elara, don’t you see?” the shadowy version of herself whispered, its voice cold and empty. “You can never escape me. I am you.”
The words were like a weight pressing down on her chest, suffocating her. It was impossible, and yet, she knew it was true. The darkness—the Abyss—it wasn’t just an external force. It was inside her, too, woven into the fabric of her soul.
“You cannot outrun your own nature,” the shadow whispered again, its eyes gleaming with malice. “You belong to the darkness. You always have.”
Elara stumbled backward, her heart racing in her chest. This… this was the true heart of the Abyss, the true source of its power. And it had been inside her all along.
“No,” she breathed, her voice cracking. “I won’t let you win.”
But the shadow only laughed, the sound echoing through the void.
“You never had a choice,” it said softly. “You are the Abyss.”
And with that, the void closed in around her, the weight of the darkness pushing against her, suffocating her once again.
---
Back in the real world, Kael stood frozen, watching in horror as Elara vanished into the darkness. His heart clenched in his chest, the pain of her loss almost unbearable.
“Elara!” he cried out, but there was no answer, only the silent roar of the Abyss.
He wasn’t going to give up. Not now, not ever.
With a final, desperate cry, Kael stepped into the shadows, following her into the unknown.
He would find her. And together, they would finish this.
No matter the cost.
