Chapter 59 Into The Void
The weight of the Abyss crashed down on her like an avalanche. Elara's breath caught in her throat, the air around her thickening, suffocating. She could feel the darkness crawling beneath her skin, threading itself through her veins, trying to drown her in its depths. It had followed them. It knew where they were.
“Elara!” Kael’s voice broke through the suffocating silence, filled with terror. He reached for her hand, his touch grounding her even as the world around them distorted and warped.
But there was no time for comfort, no time to regain control. The darkness—the Abyss—was pulling them both into its depths. The temple, their only hope, was still far away, a distant glimmer of light at the edge of the endless void.
“We need to move!” Elara shouted, struggling to steady herself. Her magic surged in her veins, but it wasn’t enough. The Abyss was too strong, and she was too drained from their earlier fight. The power of the darkness pressed in on her mind, pulling her toward a terrifying emptiness.
The shadows twisted around them, tightening their grip. Elara could feel Kael’s pulse against her skin, the frantic beat of his heart matching her own. But his strength wasn’t enough to hold them both against the might of the Abyss.
“Elara,” he whispered, his voice raw. “Please… we can’t do this alone.”
The plea in his voice ignited something inside her—a burning desire to protect him, to fight for him. She couldn’t lose him. Not like this. Not to the very force they had sworn to destroy.
Her hands began to glow with a fierce, silver light, the magic she had unlocked coursing through her like a wild river. She reached for Kael, her grip tight. Together, they were strong. Together, they could overcome this. She refused to let him slip through her fingers.
“Hold on,” she whispered to him, her voice trembling with the weight of everything they had been through. “We will fight this together.”
Her magic flared to life, spilling out from her in a surge of light and power. It met the Abyss head-on, an explosion of energy that tore through the air. The darkness shrieked, a high-pitched wail that shook the very ground beneath them.
But the Abyss wasn’t going to go down so easily. The darkness fought back, warping and distorting in response to Elara’s magic, twisting itself into something monstrous, a shape that wasn’t quite human, yet far too familiar.
Elara gasped, her heart skipping a beat as she recognized the creature standing before them. It was her—the darkness twisted into a grotesque version of herself. The figure had her face, but the eyes were different—black as midnight, cold and empty. Its smile was cruel, twisted, as it took a step forward.
“ You cannot escape yourself, Elara. ” The voice was a mocking echo of her own, the sound sending chills down her spine. “ You belong to the darkness. You are the Abyss. ”
“No,” Elara’s voice was barely a whisper, but it carried the weight of all the fear and anger she had been holding in. “I will not become you.”
The dark Elara smiled, the cruel twist of her lips stretching wider, the shadows crawling like serpents around her feet. “ You already have. ”
Kael stepped forward, his hand outstretched to Elara, his face a mask of determination. “No, Elara. You’re not her. You’re stronger than this.”
But the dark Elara’s laugh echoed, mocking them both. “ You think you can defeat me? I am not just part of you, Elara. I am the truth you’ve been hiding from. I am the part of you that will always hunger for more. ”
The Abyss began to close in, and Elara felt herself trembling under the weight of her own fears. The darkness had always been there, lurking in the corners of her mind, a part of her she had tried so hard to keep buried. It had been there from the beginning, a reflection of her own deepest, darkest desires.
But Kael was right. She was stronger than this. Stronger than the darkness.
“Elara, listen to me.” Kael’s voice was urgent, his hand gripping hers. “You are not the darkness. You are so much more than this.”
His words—simple, but full of truth—struck a chord deep within her. She closed her eyes, breathing in the warmth of his touch, the strength of his presence. The Abyss could take many forms, could try to consume them both, but it could never take what was inside her. The light, the hope, the love she had found with him.
“You’re right,” Elara said, her voice steady now, filled with newfound strength. “I am not the darkness. And neither are you.”
She turned her gaze back to the dark version of herself. The creature grinned, as if it had already won.
But Elara was done running.
With a fierce cry, she summoned her magic, calling on the power that had always been hers to control. The light within her flared brighter than ever before, more intense than the Abyss could handle. Her body shimmered with an ethereal glow as she harnessed every ounce of strength, every spark of power, to fight the darkness.
Kael’s voice joined hers, their magic blending into one force—a light so powerful it pushed the shadows back, forcing them to shrink, to writhe in agony. The dark Elara screamed, but it was fading. Fading into nothingness.
“We can do this,” Elara said, her voice full of resolve. She felt the magic surging within her, her power now fully awakened. The Abyss had no hold on her anymore.
But then, just as she thought she had won, something shifted in the air.
The ground beneath them cracked, and the dark figure of the Abyss swirled violently, shifting into a new form—larger, more terrifying, its voice shaking the very air around them.
“ You think you have won? ” the Abyss growled, its voice like a storm. “ This is only the beginning. You cannot escape your destiny, Elara. You are mine. ”
A sudden, blinding light erupted from the Abyss, and Elara’s magic faltered, the energy she had summoned dissipating like smoke in the wind. The shadows were closing in again—this time faster, stronger, with an anger that felt almost alive .
“Elara!” Kael shouted, pulling her close, his eyes wide with fear. “We need to move now!”
But it was too late.
The shadows descended upon them once again, pulling them into the suffocating grip of the Abyss, and before Elara could react, everything went black.Download Novelah App
