Chapter 62 Shattered

The darkness was suffocating. It wrapped around Elara, inside her, choking off the last remnants of her own power. Her body trembled, her mind blurred as the Abyss pulsed within her veins. It was no longer just an external force—it was her. Her magic was no longer hers alone, but something twisted, something corrupted, and something far more dangerous.
“Elara…” Kael’s voice pierced through the oppressive blackness, but it was faint—further than it had been before. She could barely hear him, let alone respond. Her chest heaved as she struggled against the rising tide of the Abyss within her.
Kael’s hand—his warmth—was the only thing tethering her to the world. But even that felt distant now, like the faintest echo of a life she was quickly slipping away from.
“Elara!” Kael’s voice cracked with urgency. “Fight it! Don’t let it control you!”
She could feel his desperation, could almost see him fighting his own shadows, his own fear. But this—what was happening to her—was different. The Abyss wasn’t just trying to break her. It was trying to become her. Her thoughts were tangled, her power slipping from her grasp like sand through her fingers. The magic that had once been her strength now burned with the cold of the void.
“Elara, please.” His voice was closer now, frantic, his fingers on her wrist, pulling her, trying to shake her from the black fog that clouded her mind. “I won’t lose you. Not to this.”
His words cut through the haze, but the Abyss inside her was far louder now, a roar that drowned out everything else. The shadows inside her seemed to grow, to twist and writhe, as if they had minds of their own. They clawed at her, feeding off her fear, her uncertainty.
She couldn’t stop it. She could feel her own magic turning against her, the darkness twisting her spells, amplifying her rage and sorrow, but turning it into something alien.
Kael shook her, his voice frantic. “ Elara! ”
Suddenly, a surge of power exploded inside her, an overwhelming, unstoppable force. It was as if the Abyss itself had completely taken over, forcing her magic to bend to its will.
“No!” Elara cried out, her voice shaking with terror. She could feel the darkness consuming her—she could feel it taking her very soul.
But then, in the heart of the storm, she felt it—a flicker of light, so faint and so small, it barely registered. It was like a thread of warmth in the coldest void. Kael.
Through the chaos, through the suffocating blackness, she clung to that thread.
“Elara…” His voice again, soft but insistent. She could feel his hand tightening around her wrist, pulling her away from the abyss inside her. “You’re stronger than this. Remember who you are.”
His words cut through the fog, reaching deep into her heart. Her magic flared again, but this time, it wasn’t the crushing, all-consuming power of the Abyss. It was hers. Her own, real magic.
“Elara…” Kael whispered again, his voice breaking. “I need you.”
The words were a lifeline, pulling her from the edge. She struggled to focus, to push back against the darkness. The Abyss didn’t just threaten her—it threatened him, too. The weight of it pressed against her, and in that moment, she realized something.
She had to stop it. For him. For them.
With a sharp intake of breath, she reached deep into herself, calling upon every ounce of magic she had left. Her body trembled with the strain, but she refused to give in. She couldn’t let the Abyss win.
The darkness inside her raged, pulling at her, clawing at her soul, but she forced herself to remember—remember the light, remember the bond between them. Remember Kael.
“ You cannot fight me, ” the Abyss whispered in her mind, its voice a hiss of venom. “ You are nothing. You will be nothing. ”
But Elara didn’t listen.
Her magic surged like a tidal wave, the very earth beneath her feet shaking as she gathered her power. Her hands, once trembling, became steady as she focused all her will on the force inside her, pushing against it with everything she had.
“Elara, please!” Kael begged, his hand tightening around hers.
With a roar, Elara forced her magic to collide with the Abyss, creating a massive shockwave that rippled through the chamber. The shadows around them recoiled, screeching as they were pushed back. The Guardian’s figure flickered, its eyes narrowing in anger.
“ No! ” The voice of the Abyss was a roar, a scream of fury. “ You cannot resist me! ”
But Elara did.
With a final surge of power, she shattered the dark tendrils that had wrapped around her, her magic cutting through them like a blade through silk. The air hummed with the force of it, and the darkness seemed to recoil, as though in fear.
“Elara!” Kael shouted, his voice laced with awe as the shadows around them began to recede. He stepped forward, his hand reaching for hers, and she felt it—their connection, the pull between them, stronger than the Abyss itself.
“Elara… you did it,” Kael whispered, his eyes wide with relief. But there was something more there now—something deeper, something unspoken. He gazed at her as though she were a miracle.
Her breath came in ragged gasps as she looked at him, struggling to hold herself together. Her body was weak, drained from the battle within her. But the Abyss was retreating now. It was no longer inside her.
“I couldn’t have done it without you,” she whispered, her voice trembling as she reached for him. “You… you gave me strength. You always have.”
Kael didn’t speak, but the look he gave her—filled with something far more profound than any words could convey—said everything. He stepped forward and pulled her into his arms, holding her as though she were the most fragile thing in the world.
They stood like that for a long moment, the weight of the battle lifting off their shoulders, the cold of the Abyss slowly receding. But the danger wasn’t over. Not by a long shot. They still had to destroy the heart of the Abyss, the source of all the darkness.
And they would. Together.
But as they turned to face the Guardian once more, they knew the worst was yet to come.
The figure in the shadows had not moved since Elara’s power had shattered the Abyss. Now, it spoke again—its voice cold and mocking.
“ The true test is yet to come. ”
Before Elara and Kael could react, the ground beneath them trembled again. The air crackled with energy as the cavern began to shift, the stone walls groaning as though the very foundations were being torn apart.
And then the Guardian spoke one final time:
“ You think you can stop me? You think you can stop what is coming? The Abyss cannot be undone. It will always return. Always. ”
The cavern began to collapse around them. And in the distance, a low, guttural rumble shook the very earth, as though the world itself was preparing for the inevitable return of darkness.
And the floor beneath them split wide open.
They had no choice but to jump.
