Chapter 65

The air in the room felt charged, thick with unspoken words and raw emotion. Nina stood there, her posture rigid, her hands clenched into fists at her sides. Her brothers had laid the truth bare before her, but it wasn’t enough. Not yet. They had given her pieces of the puzzle, but they had yet to give her the whole picture. The story wasn’t over, not by a long shot.
Adrian and Daniel exchanged a look, silently communicating, as if weighing the consequences of what came next. Charlotte remained standing at Nina’s side, her hand still resting on Nina’s shoulder. She could feel Nina’s body tense under the weight of their revelations, the burden of knowing what had been done to her and what she had never allowed herself to see before.
“I don’t understand,” Nina said quietly, breaking the silence. Her voice was unsteady, the tremor barely noticeable, but the pain in her words was impossible to ignore. “You say you protected me. But why did you do it like this? Why did you let me suffer in silence?”
The question hung in the air, sharp and accusatory. It was a question Charlotte had asked herself a thousand times, but she had never dared to voice. The guilt she had carried—had they done the right thing? Could they have done more? Could they have saved Nina sooner?
“We thought we were protecting you, Nina,” Daniel said, his voice heavy with regret. “We were too scared, too naive. We didn’t know what to do. We thought if we kept it quiet, it would stop. We were wrong.”
Adrian’s voice joined his, softer this time, almost apologetic. “We were afraid if you knew everything, it would break you. We didn’t want to burden you with the truth. We thought you’d be too fragile to handle it.”
Nina’s eyes, once filled with trust, now looked at them with a mixture of anger and disbelief. “Fragile?” she repeated, her voice rising. “You think I’m fragile? You think I couldn’t handle the truth?”
Charlotte opened her mouth, but no words came out. She wanted to apologize. She wanted to tell Nina how sorry she was for failing her, for letting her brothers decide what Nina could handle and what she couldn’t. But Nina wasn’t asking for apologies. She wanted something more. Something real.
“Maybe you think you were protecting me,” Nina continued, her voice gaining strength, “but what you did… it broke me more than anything.”
Charlotte felt a pang in her chest, the sting of Nina’s words settling deep. Nina had been broken long ago, but they hadn’t seen it. They had been too busy hiding their own secrets, too busy trying to protect her from something they never fully understood.
“But we didn’t know what else to do,” Adrian said, his voice cracking slightly. “We didn’t know how to fight against them. How could we protect you from something like that?”
Nina turned away, her face scrunching up in frustration as she tried to process the years of deception, the betrayal, the lies. Her mind was a whirlwind of emotions, each one competing for her attention. She felt angry. She felt hurt. But above all, she felt lost. She didn’t know who to trust anymore.
Charlotte stepped forward, finally speaking up. “Nina… I can’t take away what’s happened. I can’t undo the past. But I can promise you this: we will fix this. We will stop it.”
Nina turned back to her, her eyes raw. “How? How do you fix something like this? How do you fix me?”
The words hit Charlotte harder than she had expected. How could she fix Nina? How could she erase the pain and suffering Nina had endured for so long?
“You don’t fix it, Nina,” Charlotte said quietly, her voice trembling with emotion. “You heal it. One step at a time. And I’ll be here with you, every step of the way.”
Nina stared at her for a long moment, her eyes searching Charlotte’s face, as if looking for something. Charlotte held her gaze, refusing to look away, refusing to let Nina feel like she was alone.
Finally, Nina nodded slowly, though her eyes were still distant, her mind still racing. The truth, as much as it had hurt, had been revealed. But there was more to the story. There were still pieces missing, things they hadn’t talked about yet.
“Do you ever think about what could’ve happened if we’d just told you the truth earlier?” Adrian asked quietly, his voice heavy with guilt.
Nina shook her head. “Maybe it wouldn’t have changed anything. Maybe I still would’ve been too scared to say anything. Maybe I would’ve shut it all out like I always do.”
“You don’t have to shut it out anymore,” Daniel said, stepping closer to her. “We’ll help you, Nina. We’ll be here for you. We’ll fix what was broken.”
Nina took a deep breath, as if bracing herself for something. She wasn’t ready to forgive them—not yet. But she was ready to move forward, to understand the truth, even if it hurt. She didn’t know if she could ever trust fully again, but the path ahead was clearer than it had been before.
“Okay,” Nina said finally, her voice softer now, but still carrying a weight of resolve. “But we’re doing this together. No more secrets.”
Charlotte nodded, a sense of relief flooding her chest. The journey ahead was going to be long, and it wasn’t going to be easy. But they were finally ready to face it.
Adrian and Daniel exchanged looks. They had all been broken in some way, but maybe—just maybe—this was the beginning of their healing.
The silence in the room wasn’t the same as before. It wasn’t thick with tension anymore. It was filled with the tentative hope that maybe, just maybe, they could put the past behind them and start something new. Something better.
For the first time in a long while, Charlotte felt like they might actually have a chance.
