Chapter 64

The room was eerily quiet, the tension thick enough to cut with a knife. Nina stood before them, her eyes still wary but searching, waiting for something—anything—that might make sense of the chaos that had been her life. Charlotte could feel the weight of her gaze, the silent questioning, the need for answers that had been buried too deep for too long.
Charlotte had always been able to read Nina, but now, it felt different. Nina had changed. They all had. The people they once were had been swept away by the tides of manipulation, violence, and lies. Now, they were left standing in the wreckage of their pasts, unsure of how to rebuild—or if it was even possible.
Charlotte opened her mouth, but the words stuck in her throat. It was as if she was waiting for someone else to speak, for someone else to say what they were all too afraid to admit. She glanced at Daniel and Adrian, but both of them were silent. It was clear: the weight of the truth wasn’t just on her shoulders, but on all of them.
Finally, Nina broke the silence.
“So, what now?” she asked, her voice barely more than a whisper. “What happens to us?”
Charlotte swallowed, fighting the lump in her throat. This wasn’t just about them anymore. This was about Nina—about everything she had been through, everything that had been done to her, and everything they had all been forced to do in order to survive. Charlotte wasn’t sure how much longer Nina could take it. But there was no turning back now.
“We need to tell you everything,” Charlotte said, her voice steady but trembling. “About Peter. About what he did. About how we were all involved, how we let it get this far. And we need to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
Nina took a step forward, her expression unreadable. “What are you talking about?” Her voice was sharp now, demanding answers.
Charlotte looked to Adrian, then to Daniel, and nodded. Adrian stepped forward first, his eyes still full of that same distant, unreadable look that had been there since the night they found Peter.
“The truth is,” Adrian started, his voice low but firm, “Peter wasn’t the only one pulling the strings. There were others—people we didn’t know about, people who hid in the shadows, watching us. Watching you.”
Nina frowned, confused. “What do you mean?”
Adrian hesitated, running a hand through his hair. He had always been the quiet one, the one who kept his emotions locked away. But this time, the weight of his words seemed to break something inside him.
“There were… there were more of them. More men. More people who hurt you, Nina,” Adrian said, his voice thick with regret. “We didn’t know at first. We thought it was just Peter. But then, after everything happened, we put the pieces together. We found the evidence. It wasn’t just him. It was a network.”
Nina’s breath hitched, her face pale. “You… you mean there were more?” she whispered, as if she couldn’t fully grasp the words.
Charlotte nodded, her throat tight. “Yes. And we… we tried to stop it. Adrian, Daniel, and I, we tried to protect you. We didn’t know how deep it went until it was too late.”
Nina shook her head, her hand clutching at her chest as if she could physically hold herself together. “But why didn’t you tell me? Why didn’t you—”
“We were scared,” Daniel interrupted, his voice raw. “We didn’t want to burden you more. We thought if we just kept things quiet, kept you safe, that it would all go away.”
“But it didn’t go away, did it?” Nina’s voice was broken now, the pain of everything she had been through rushing to the surface. “You think I didn’t know? You think I couldn’t feel it? You think I didn’t see the bloodstains, feel the bruises, hear the whispers?”
The room seemed to freeze at her words. Charlotte could feel her heart breaking, her guilt clawing at her chest. She had known, of course. She had always known. But there was a difference between knowing and being able to act on it.
“I’m sorry,” Charlotte said, her voice breaking. “I’m so sorry, Nina. We should have told you. We should have fought harder for you. But we were too scared. We thought we could protect you by hiding the truth.”
Nina’s eyes filled with tears, but she didn’t let them fall. Instead, she took a deep breath, standing taller than Charlotte had ever seen her before.
“I don’t need your apologies,” Nina said, her voice firm but shaking. “What I need is the truth. The full truth.”
Adrian nodded slowly, his face grim. “We’ll give you that. We have to. For all of us.”
Daniel stepped forward, his eyes meeting Nina’s with a look of deep regret. “It’s over now. Peter’s gone. We won’t let anyone hurt you again. We promise.”
Nina looked between them all, her eyes dark with the weight of everything they had just revealed. The air felt heavy with the shared responsibility of what had been done and what needed to be done.
There was no going back now.
For a long moment, Nina stood silently, her mind racing as she processed everything. The truth was ugly. It was dark. It was painful. But it was hers now. All of it. She had the power to choose what came next.
“I don’t know what to do with all of this,” Nina said finally, her voice quieter now. “I don’t know how to move forward.”
Charlotte took a step toward her, placing a hand on her shoulder. “You don’t have to figure it out alone. We’re here, Nina. We’ll help you through it.”
Nina nodded, but there was something distant in her eyes now. Something closed off. It was as if she had shut a door inside herself, unwilling to open it just yet.
Charlotte knew that the road ahead would be long and filled with uncertainty. But she also knew one thing: whatever happened next, they would face it together.
For the first time in a long while, Charlotte felt a flicker of hope.
