Chapter 66

The sun had long since set, and the night air was cool, with an uneasy stillness that settled over the group. The quiet of the house felt heavy, like an unsolved riddle hanging in the air. Nina, Adrian, Daniel, and Charlotte stood in the living room, the weight of their conversation from earlier still lingering between them. The walls, once a comforting presence, now felt oppressive as they all stood together, trying to navigate the storm inside each of their minds.
Nina had stepped away from her brothers, retreating to the corner of the room, her eyes lost in thought. She hadn’t said much since their exchange. Words had become a currency that she no longer knew how to spend. What could she say? How could she process everything she’d just learned? The truth had shattered her—each piece more jagged than the last.
Adrian and Daniel, on the other hand, were left with the silence of their own guilt. Adrian kept his gaze averted, as if he couldn’t bear to look at Nina. Daniel, more restless, paced the room, occasionally glancing at his sister.
Charlotte stood a few steps away from Nina, watching her closely. She could sense the turbulence in Nina’s eyes, the war waging inside her. As much as she wanted to step forward, to offer comfort, she knew that Nina needed space. And time. Charlotte only hoped she hadn’t waited too long to make things right.
“I didn’t ask for any of this,” Nina finally spoke, her voice almost inaudible, but the words were sharp, cutting through the quiet. She turned her head to face them. “You think you’re protecting me, but you just made me more afraid. You thought I couldn’t handle it, but I’ve been handling it all along.”
Adrian flinched at her words, and it was Daniel who spoke next, his voice steady but laced with remorse. “We were wrong, Nina. I’m sorry for making those decisions for you. We thought we were doing what was best, but we never gave you the chance to choose.”
Nina didn’t respond immediately, just stared at them, her arms crossed tightly over her chest. Then she looked at Charlotte, her expression unreadable. “And you… you knew. You knew everything. You just stood there and let them lie to me.”
Charlotte’s throat tightened, and she swallowed hard. She couldn’t find the right words. She had let them lie. She had let them keep the truth hidden for so long. She had been complicit in their silence. For Nina, it must have felt like betrayal.
“I was wrong too, Nina,” Charlotte said softly, stepping closer, but keeping her distance. “I should’ve said something. I should’ve pushed harder to make you see the truth.”
Nina shook her head slowly, her expression unreadable. “You think you could’ve changed anything? You think that if you had told me earlier, I would’ve been okay?”
Charlotte felt a pang in her chest. She couldn’t answer that. She didn’t know if Nina would have been okay. The reality of what had happened was too complex, too painful to untangle in a few words.
“It’s not about being okay,” Charlotte said quietly. “It’s about being honest. It’s about giving you the space to decide for yourself.”
Nina didn’t speak again, but her gaze softened for the briefest moment. Then, as quickly as the vulnerability appeared, it disappeared, replaced by the hard shell Nina had long ago built around herself. She wasn’t fragile anymore. She wasn’t the girl who needed saving.
And for that, Charlotte was grateful.
The room fell silent again. The past hung heavy, but there was something else in the air now, something heavier than guilt. It was the weight of what would happen next. They were standing at the precipice of something irreversible. The truth was out, but that didn’t mean the consequences were over.
“I don’t know if I can ever trust you again,” Nina whispered, her voice breaking for the first time. “You made me feel like I was weak. Like I couldn’t even protect myself.”
“We never wanted you to feel weak,” Daniel said urgently, taking a step toward her. “We were just trying to protect you, Nina. We—”
“You’ve been protecting me all this time,” she cut him off. “But what about me? What about what I wanted? You made decisions for me without asking, without thinking about how I’d feel.”
The words struck a chord deep within Charlotte. She had seen Nina as strong, seen the way she had kept her pain hidden all these years. But Nina had never truly been given the chance to make her own decisions, not in the way she needed. They had been too protective, too controlling. Nina had grown up in the shadow of their decisions.
The room felt smaller now, the air heavier. Charlotte moved toward Nina, this time without hesitation. “I can’t change what happened, Nina,” she said softly, “but I want you to know, I’ll stand by you. I’ll give you the space to decide for yourself. Whatever happens next, I’m with you.”
Nina finally looked at Charlotte, really looked at her, as if seeing her for the first time. And maybe, in some way, Nina was.
“I don’t know what’s next,” Nina replied quietly, “but I know it’s not just about forgiving you.” She paused, her voice taking on a somber tone. “It’s about finding a way to live with what we’ve done. What’s been done to me.”
Adrian, who had been standing silently in the corner, took a deep breath. “Nina, whatever happens, we’ll make it right. We’ll stop the people who hurt you. We won’t let them get away with it.”
Nina gave a bitter laugh, though it held no humor. “You really think you can stop them? After everything that’s happened?”
Charlotte looked at Nina, the exhaustion in her eyes. She knew what Nina meant. The road ahead would be long, filled with uncertainty and more questions than answers. But Charlotte wasn’t ready to give up. Not on Nina. Not on them.
“I think we have to try,” Charlotte said, her voice steady. “We have to try, Nina. Otherwise, what was all this for?”
The weight of their past actions was heavy, and the road ahead was unclear. But for the first time in a long while, Charlotte felt like they were at the beginning of something new. Not because everything was fixed, but because they were finally facing the truth.
And facing the truth was the first step toward healing.
