Chapter 8 - Adoption

In the dimly lit hospital room, Angelo and Joshua sat in somber silence, their hearts heavy with grief over the loss of their dear friends, Ralph and Loraine. As they watched over Cheska, who lay unconscious in the hospital bed, their thoughts turned to the daunting task ahead – adopting and caring for the orphaned child left behind by the tragic events.
Angelo: (voice filled with sorrow) It's hard to believe they're gone, Josh. Ralph and Loraine were like family to us.
Joshua: (nodding solemnly) I know, Ange. It feels like we've lost a piece of ourselves. But we have to stay strong for Cheska. She's going to need us now more than ever.
Angelo's gaze drifted to the sleeping form of Cheska, her innocent face peaceful despite the turmoil surrounding her.
Angelo: (voice choked with emotion) We can't let her down, Josh. We made a promise to Ralph and Loraine that we would take care of her, and we have to honor that promise.
Joshua: (placing a comforting hand on Angelo's shoulder) We will, Ange. We'll do whatever it takes to give Cheska the love and support she needs to thrive.
As they contemplated the future that lay ahead, Angelo and Joshua knew that the road ahead would not be easy. They would have to navigate the complexities of legal guardianship, while also grappling with their own grief and loss.
Angelo: (thoughtfully) Do you think we're ready for this, Josh? To become parents overnight?
Joshua: (pausing to consider) I don't know if anyone's ever truly ready for something like this, Ange. But I do know that we have each other, and we have a lot of love to give. And with that, I believe we can give Cheska the life she deserves.
Angelo's eyes shimmered with determination as he looked at Joshua, a silent understanding passing between them.
Angelo: (firmly) Then let's do this, Josh. For Ralph and Loraine, and for Cheska. We'll be the family she needs, no matter what.
And with that shared resolve, Angelo and Joshua embarked on their journey to become the parents that Cheska so desperately needed, their hearts filled with love and determination to honor the legacy of their fallen friends.
As Joshua and Andrea prepared to take Cheska home from the hospital, a heavy silence hung in the air, the weight of their responsibilities as new guardians pressing down upon them.
Joshua: (voice filled with concern) I hope we're making the right decision, Andrea. Taking Cheska home with us... it's a big responsibility.
Andrea: (placing a reassuring hand on Joshua's arm) We're doing what's best for her, Josh. She needs stability and love, and we can provide that for her.
Joshua's gaze drifted to Cheska, who sat quietly beside him, her eyes downcast and her demeanor subdued. His heart ached at the sight of her, knowing the pain and trauma she had endured at such a young age.
Joshua: (softly) Cheska, sweetheart, are you okay?
Cheska's response was a hesitant nod, her small frame trembling with suppressed emotions.
Cheska: (barely above a whisper) I'm fine, Uncle Josh. Thank you.
Andrea exchanged a worried glance with Joshua, her maternal instincts kicking in as she reached out to gently brush Cheska's hair away from her face.
Andrea: (voice gentle) It's okay to not be okay, Cheska. We're here for you, no matter what you're feeling.
Cheska's eyes brimmed with unshed tears as she struggled to find the words to express the turmoil raging inside her.
Cheska: (voice barely audible) I miss Mommy and Daddy... and everything feels different now.
Joshua's heart broke at Cheska's words, his resolve to provide her with a safe and loving home strengthened by her vulnerability.
Joshua: (voice thick with emotion) We miss them too, Cheska. But we're going to take care of you, just like they would have wanted. You're not alone in this.
Andrea: (nodding in agreement) We'll get through this together, Cheska. You're part of our family now, and we're going to love you with all our hearts.
As they embarked on the journey home, Joshua and Andrea knew that the road ahead would be filled with challenges and obstacles. But with love, patience, and unwavering support, they were determined to help Cheska heal from the wounds of her past and build a brighter future together as a family.
Cheska's perspective: 5 years later, I was 8 years old when I returned to the Benevida family but still under the care of my uncle Joshua. Unbeknownst to me, I have another uncle who has not been seen for 5 years and this is my mentor Angelo De Guzman. I grew up in the Benevida family. in fighting, the Benevidas rank second to the De Guzman family. Due to family tradition, ancestors pass their tenure to their daughters. And because of this I met my mentor Angelo De Guzman.
Joshua: Starting from today, He will be your mentor. So be kind to him okay?
Angelo: Alright, Cheska, let's start with some basic moves. Fighting is about technique and strategy. It's not just about brute strength.
Cheska nods silently, her eyes focused on Angelo's instructions.
Angelo: First, we'll work on your stance. Keep your feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and your hands up to protect your face.
Cheska mimics the stance, adjusting her position to match Angelo's guidance.
Angelo: Good. Now, let's practice some punches. Start with a jab, straight out from your leading hand, then follow with a cross, using your other hand for power.
Cheska begins to throw punches, her movements hesitant at first but gradually gaining confidence as Angelo offers feedback and corrections.
Angelo: Excellent. Now, let's incorporate some footwork. Move around a bit, circling your opponent, staying light on your feet.
Cheska starts to move around, following Angelo's instructions, her movements becoming more fluid with each step.
Angelo: You're doing great, Cheska. Remember, it's not just about hitting your opponent, but also about predicting their moves and staying one step ahead.
Cheska nods, a determined look in her eyes as she continues to train with Angelo, silently absorbing every lesson he imparts
As Cheska continued her training under Angelo's watchful eye, Joshua and Andrea stood nearby, observing her progress with a sense of pride and gratitude for how far she had come since the tragic incident that had claimed her parents' lives five years ago.
Andrea: (smiling softly) Look at her, Joshua. She's come such a long way.
Joshua: (nodding, his eyes never leaving Cheska) Yeah, she has. I'm proud of her, Andrea. She's stronger than she knows.
Andrea: (placing a hand on Joshua's arm) We owe it to Ralph and Loraine to give Cheska the best chance at life, Josh. And seeing her like this... it reassures me that we're doing just that.
Joshua's gaze softened as he turned to Andrea, a flicker of sadness crossing his features as he thought of their dear friends who were no longer with them.
Joshua: (voice filled with emotion) They would be so proud of her, Andrea. Despite everything she's been through, Cheska has remained resilient. She's a fighter, just like her parents.
Andrea: (squeezing Joshua's hand) We'll make sure she knows that, Josh. We'll remind her every day of the love and strength she inherited from Ralph and Loraine.
As Cheska continued to train, her movements becoming more fluid and confident with each passing moment, Joshua and Andrea exchanged a knowing glance, a silent acknowledgment of the bond that had formed between them and the young girl who had captured their hearts.
Andrea: (voice tinged with emotion) She's going to be okay, Joshua. With us by her side, she's going to thrive.
Joshua: (smiling, his eyes shining with pride) Yeah, she is. We'll make sure of it, Andrea. We'll give her the love and support she needs to carry on the Benevida family legacy.
As they watched Cheska spar with Angelo, her determination evident in every movement, Joshua and Andrea knew that together, they would overcome whatever challenges lay ahead, united in their commitment to ensuring Cheska's happiness and well-being.
