Chapter 13: The Trial Begins

The first rays of dawn filtered through the tall windows of the hotel, casting a golden hue over the players gathered in the main hall. A sense of anticipation and anxiety filled the air as they awaited the Guardian’s arrival.
Seyun stood at the front of the group, flanked by Mina, Aiden, Lila, and Theo. “This is it, everyone,” he said, his voice steady but firm. “We’ve prepared as best as we can. Remember our plan: stay together and communicate.”
Mina nodded, her face pale but determined. “I can do this. We can do this.”
“I can’t wait to run,” Aiden said, trying to inject some humor into the situation. “Just not into any undead this time, please.”
Theo chuckled, though the tension was palpable. “Just focus on the goal. We’ll find a way to win.”
The Guardian suddenly appeared in a swirl of mist, his presence commanding immediate attention. “Players, gather around!” he called, his voice echoing through the hall.
Seyun felt a shiver run down his spine as the other players formed a circle around the Guardian, all eyes fixed on him. The anticipation was thick, a mix of excitement and fear hanging in the air.
“Welcome to your second trial,” the Guardian announced, his expression inscrutable. “This trial is called ‘The Race of Trials.’ You will race to reach the finish line at the center of the Maze of Perils. There are no rules—only one goal: to be the first to cross the finish line.”
A murmur rippled through the crowd. Seyun could see the anxiety written on many faces. “What about the undead?” someone shouted from the back.
“The undead and other obstacles will be present,” the Guardian replied coolly. “You must navigate through them as you race. Only the quickest and most cunning will survive. The trial begins in ten seconds. Prepare yourselves!”
“Ten seconds?!” Aiden exclaimed, his eyes wide. “What are we supposed to do?”
“Just stick together!” Seyun urged, his heart pounding. “We’ll find a way through!”
“Five seconds!” the Guardian called out, his gaze piercing through the crowd.
“Let’s move!” Seyun shouted, grabbing Mina’s hand as he turned to run.
“Go, go, go!” Aiden shouted, pushing through the throng of players.
The moment the Guardian announced the start of the race, the players surged forward, a chaotic rush of bodies as they raced toward the entrance of the Maze of Perils.
Seyun, Mina, Aiden, Theo, and Lila sprinted together, their feet pounding against the ground. The maze loomed ahead, its dark corridors twisting and turning like a living creature.
“Stay close!” Lila called out, leading the way. “We need to watch for traps and undead!”
As they entered the maze, the sounds of racing footsteps filled the air, echoing off the stone walls. The atmosphere grew heavier, and Seyun could feel the tension mounting with every step.
Suddenly, a chilling moan echoed through the maze. “What was that?” Mina gasped, her eyes wide with fear.
“Just keep running!” Seyun shouted, glancing back to see a group of undead shuffling in their direction. “We have to move!”
They rounded a corner, but the path split into three different ways. Seyun skidded to a halt, panting heavily. “Which way do we go?”
“Right!” Aiden said, pointing down the middle corridor. “I saw some players go that way!”
“Let’s go!” Seyun shouted, leading the group down the path.
As they ran, the moans of the undead grew louder, filling the air with a sense of dread. Seyun could hear the shuffling footsteps behind them, the relentless pursuit driving him forward.
“Faster! They’re gaining on us!” Theo yelled, glancing back at the approaching horde.
They reached a narrow passageway, forcing them to slow down. “This way!” Lila urged, leading them into the tight corridor.
The passage was dark, the shadows dancing around them as they pressed on. “Do you think we’ll make it?” Mina panted, her breath coming in short gasps.
“We have to!” Seyun replied, determination surging within him. “We can’t give up now!”
Suddenly, the walls of the corridor shook, and debris fell from above. “Watch out!” Seyun shouted, pushing Mina and Aiden forward as he shielded them from the falling rubble.
“Are you okay?” Aiden asked, his voice strained with panic.
“I’m fine!” Seyun replied, shaking off the dust. “Let’s keep moving!”
They stumbled into a larger chamber, and the sight before them left them momentarily stunned. A massive stone statue loomed at the center, its eyes glowing red with an ominous light.
“What is that?” Theo whispered, his voice trembling.
“Another obstacle,” Lila said, her eyes narrowing. “We can’t let it block our path!”
As they moved closer, the statue shifted, its stone arms lifting as if preparing to attack. “We need to get past it!” Seyun shouted. “Everyone, to the sides!”
The statue swung its arm, narrowly missing Seyun as he ducked. “Go! We need to get around it!” he urged, sprinting toward the left.
The others followed suit, weaving around the statue as it roared in frustration, its red eyes locking onto them.
“Run!” Aiden yelled, sprinting toward an exit on the far side of the chamber.
Seyun and the others charged after him, their hearts pounding as they narrowly escaped the statue’s grasp. They burst through the exit and into another corridor, the path twisting before them.
“We’re almost there!” Seyun called out, pushing them to move faster. “Keep going!”
Just then, the ground beneath them began to shake violently, sending them tumbling to the floor. “What’s happening?” Mina cried, scrambling to her feet.
“Keep moving!” Seyun yelled, pulling her up. “We can’t stop!”
As they ran, the walls of the maze began to shift, forming new pathways as they pressed forward. “This is insane!” Theo shouted, trying to keep his balance.
They pushed through, each corner revealing new dangers, but Seyun kept his focus on the finish line. They could see a flickering light in the distance—a sign that they were getting closer.
“Look!” Lila pointed ahead. “The finish line!”
They could see the glowing finish line just beyond a massive set of gates. The players around them were growing fewer, their faces reflecting desperation and determination.
“Let’s go!” Seyun shouted, urging everyone forward. “We can make it!”
As they closed in on the gates, a sudden roar echoed behind them. Seyun turned to see a horde of undead barreling down the corridor, their eyes filled with a mindless hunger.
“Run!” Aiden shouted, sprinting ahead.
With adrenaline coursing through his veins, Seyun surged forward, his heart racing. “We’re almost there! Don’t stop!”
They reached the gates just as the undead closed in. Seyun pushed against the heavy doors, feeling them give way as they tumbled into the open space beyond.
“Go, go, go!” Theo shouted, urging them on.
They leaped through the gates, crossing the finish line just as the undead reached the threshold. A blinding light enveloped them, and the world around them dissolved into a bright glow.
Seyun closed his eyes, feeling the warmth wash over him. When he opened them again, they found themselves standing in the hotel once more, the chaos of the maze fading into memory.
Breathing heavily, Seyun looked around at his teammates, relief flooding through him. “We made it!”
“Barely,” Mina gasped, her face pale but triumphant.
“Yeah, but we did it together,” Aiden said, grinning widely.
Lila smiled, her eyes sparkling with determination. “And we’re one step closer to winning this game.”
As they gathered together, they realized that they had forged an unbreakable bond through the trials they faced. The challenges ahead were still daunting, but they were ready to tackle whatever came next.
“Let’s keep preparing for the next trial,” Seyun said, his voice steady. “We’ve proven that we can face anything together.”
