Chapter 17: The Second Trial's Unveiling

The group pressed forward through the labyrinth’s winding corridors, the air heavy with the tension of what lay ahead. Seyun, Hana, and Kaito remained vigilant, their senses sharp after their battle with the stone creature. Every shadow seemed like a potential threat, and every step carried the weight of uncertainty.
"I still can’t believe we made it through that thing," Kaito muttered, wiping sweat from his forehead. His voice echoed slightly in the narrow corridor. "If we hadn’t stuck together—"
"We’d be dust like that creature," Hana finished, her eyes scanning the walls ahead. "We were lucky this time. But the next trial... it’s going to be worse. The game’s only going to get more dangerous."
Seyun, who had been walking slightly ahead, stopped suddenly. He turned to face them, his expression serious.
"It’s not just going to get more dangerous," he said, his voice low. "The trials are designed to tear us apart, test our limits. The stronger our bond, the harder the challenge. The gods want to see if we break under pressure."
Hana frowned. "But we can’t afford to break. Not now. We’ve come too far."
Seyun’s gaze shifted to the walls of the labyrinth, where strange runes glowed faintly. He could feel something building—a force pulling them deeper into the game’s grip. "Stay sharp," he said, moving forward again. "This place isn’t done with us yet."
The group advanced cautiously, their footsteps the only sound in the labyrinth’s eerie silence. Suddenly, they came to a dead end. At the center of the stone wall, another door stood—this one adorned with golden vines and symbols they didn’t recognize.
"Another trial?" Kaito asked, his voice wavering with a mix of anticipation and dread.
Hana examined the door. "It’s different from the first one. But I’ve got a bad feeling about this."
The golden vines on the door began to move, twisting and coiling as the door creaked open. A soft breeze blew from within, carrying with it the scent of something unfamiliar—something that made the hairs on the back of Seyun’s neck stand up.
A voice—cold and commanding—echoed through the chamber. "Welcome, players, to the second trial. This is where the weak are weeded out, and the strong rise to claim victory."
Kaito swallowed hard. "Great. Just what we needed—more cryptic godspeak."
The voice continued. "This trial is a test of your endurance, your strategy, and your will to survive. The goal is simple: reach the end. But the path will not be easy."
Seyun’s mind was already racing, trying to anticipate what lay ahead. "Let’s go," he said, stepping through the door. Hana and Kaito followed close behind, their expressions a mix of determination and fear.
As they crossed the threshold, the scenery changed abruptly. The labyrinth faded away, and they found themselves standing at the edge of a vast open plain. In the distance, a tall, gleaming tower rose from the horizon—their destination.
"Is that... the goal?" Hana asked, her eyes widening in disbelief.
"It looks like it," Seyun replied. "But there’s no way it’s as simple as just running to the tower."
Kaito glanced around nervously. "No traps? No monsters? This doesn’t feel right."
"Exactly," Seyun said, his gaze narrowing. "The gods wouldn’t make it that easy. There’s something else here."
As if on cue, a loud, guttural roar echoed from behind them. Seyun turned just in time to see a massive horde of undead creatures rising from the ground, their eyes glowing with an unnatural light. They were fast, their twisted bodies moving with terrifying agility.
"Run!" Seyun shouted, his voice cutting through the panic.
The group bolted, their feet pounding the ground as the undead surged toward them, their snarls and roars growing louder by the second. Hana glanced back, her face pale.
"They’re gaining on us!" she yelled, panic creeping into her voice.
Seyun’s mind raced. There had to be a strategy—something to slow them down or outmaneuver them. But the plain was wide open, with no cover and no obvious way to escape.
Kaito, panting heavily, looked at Seyun with desperation in his eyes. "What do we do? We can’t outrun them forever!"
Seyun’s gaze locked onto the distant tower. "We need to make it there. It’s the only way out."
"But how?" Hana shouted, her breathing ragged. "They’ll catch us before we get halfway!"
Seyun scanned the area, his sharp eyes picking up on small details—the uneven terrain, the dips and rises in the ground. "We use the terrain," he said quickly. "There are natural slopes and depressions up ahead. If we can funnel them into one of the lower areas, we might be able to buy ourselves some time."
Hana glanced at him, her eyes wide. "You’re crazy. But I don’t have a better plan."
They veered slightly to the left, heading for a small ridge that overlooked a sunken valley. The undead horde followed, relentless and tireless.
As they reached the ridge, Seyun gestured for them to stop. "We need to time this right. When they start climbing the slope, we slide down the other side and create distance. Ready?"
Kaito nodded, though his face was pale. Hana gripped her weapon tightly, steeling herself for what was to come.
The undead reached the base of the ridge and began to climb, their claws digging into the earth as they scrambled up the slope. Seyun waited, counting the seconds in his head.
"Now!" he shouted.
The three of them sprinted down the other side of the ridge, their feet slipping on the loose dirt but moving as quickly as they could. The undead, slowed by the climb, were momentarily left behind.
"We bought some time," Hana panted. "But not much."
Seyun nodded, his mind already working on the next step. "We need to keep moving. Stay ahead of them. The tower’s still a long way off."
They ran, pushing their bodies to the limit as the undead continued their relentless pursuit. Every time the creatures closed in, Seyun found another way to use the terrain to their advantage, keeping them just out of reach.
But as they neared the tower, the ground began to shake. From beneath the earth, massive skeletal hands burst forth, clawing at the ground. The tower loomed ahead, but the path was now littered with obstacles—giant bones rising from the ground, forming a labyrinth of their own.
"We’re almost there!" Kaito shouted, his voice filled with hope. "Just a little further!"
Seyun’s eyes narrowed. "Don’t get careless. This is the final stretch—they’re going to throw everything at us."
As they weaved through the boneyard, the undead grew more aggressive, their numbers swelling as they closed in from all sides. Seyun led the way, his mind focused on one thing: survival.
Finally, they reached the base of the tower. A massive door stood before them, glowing with the same golden light they had seen in the labyrinth.
"Open it!" Hana shouted, her voice filled with urgency.
Seyun pushed against the door, but it wouldn’t budge. "It’s locked!"
"No!" Kaito cried, panic rising in his voice. "We came all this way—there has to be a way in!"
Seyun glanced around, searching for any clue, any sign of what they needed to do. The undead were closing in fast, their growls and snarls filling the air.
Suddenly, the voice of the Administrator echoed in the distance. "Only those who prove their strength of bond may enter the tower. Sacrifice is the key."
Seyun’s heart sank. "Sacrifice...?"
Hana’s eyes widened in realization. "One of us has to stay behind."
Kaito’s face went pale. "No way. We’ve made it this far together. There has to be another way!"
Seyun clenched his fists. The gods had designed this trial to break them—and now it was asking for the ultimate test of their bond.
"There’s no other choice," Seyun said quietly. "One of us has to stay... or none of us make it through."
The undead were almost upon them. The clock was ticking. And the hardest decision of their lives was now at hand.
