Chapter 10

I ran through the labyrinthine streets with a desperation that bordered on madness, driven by an unrelenting urgency.
Each step I took seemed to echo with the weight of my panic as I shouted, “SATORUUU!” into the empty expanse.
The call reverberated through the deserted alleys, but the silence that followed was deafening.
It was as though the very air had conspired to silence my pleas. I scoured every familiar location, retracing our shared paths, searching for any sign of him.
Even when I reached out to acquaintances and friends, their responses were unsettlingly blank. They looked at me with vacant expressions, unable to recognize or remember me.
It felt as though I had been erased from their collective memory, leaving me isolated and alien in a world that once seemed so connected.
The anguished words of my other self haunted me, “YOU KNOW YOU LOVE HIM SO WHY?!” Each word was a sharp reminder of my failures, intensifying the pain that was already gripping me.
My mind was flooded with memories of Satoru: his smile, which had always seemed to light up the darkest corners of my life; his smirk, playful and mischievous; and his laughter, a sound that had become a source of joy and comfort.
I remembered his teasing, the way he would turn even the mundane into something special, and his relentless efforts to care for me during my bouts of illness.
His presence was a comforting constant, his gentle touch on my forehead a balm to my suffering, and his protective nature a shield against the world's harshness.
Each memory was a poignant reminder of the bond we shared, a bond that now seemed irreparably fractured.
Overwhelmed by the torrent of emotions, I pressed my hands to my chest, feeling the acute pain of loss and regret.
Seeking refuge, I slumped against the nearest wall, my body shaking with the force of my sobs. My hands began to lose their solidity, just as my other self had warned, and tears streamed uncontrollably down my face.
I buried my head in my arms, surrendering to the depths of my grief, feeling as though the very fabric of my existence was unraveling.
In the midst of my despair, a sudden warmth enveloped me, a presence so familiar that it seemed almost unreal. The embrace was unmistakable—it was Satoru.
I opened my eyes, and the reality of his presence was both comforting and disorienting. The sensation of his arms around me was a fleeting balm to my anguish, and I could feel the warmth of his tears mingling with my own.
“Stop crying now,” he whispered gently, his voice breaking with emotion as he buried his face against my back.
“Y-You know how much I hate seeing you like t-this.” His words were punctuated by the warmth of his tears, which seeped into my clothes, merging with my own.
“How can you still remember me?” I stammered, my voice trembling with confusion and hope.
“How did you know?” I needed answers, desperate to understand how he could still be here, how he could still remember me amidst the chaos and dissolution of our reality.
“You became the only reason why I still chose to live even after my parents' deaths,” he replied, his voice laden with a mixture of tenderness and sorrow.
“You became my cure and my weakness at the same time; how would I forget?” His embrace tightened, a physical manifestation of the profound connection we shared, and his words were a balm to my shattered heart.
“You are my everything,” he said softly, his breath warm and comforting against my ear. His words, coupled with the gentleness of his touch, were both a solace and a heartbreak.
Slowly, he loosened his hold, his eyes meeting mine with an intensity that transcended the ordinary.
With a gentle motion, he leaned forward and placed a tender kiss on my forehead. It was a gesture imbued with the weight of our shared history and the depth of his feelings.
“I will find you no matter where you are,” he whispered, his voice carrying the promise of an enduring connection despite the odds.
I watched him, my heart aching with each passing second, as he began to dissolve into a shimmering bubble of ephemeral memories.
The sight of him fading away was a profound and painful reminder of our fleeting moments together.
“I’ll wait for you,” I said softly, my voice barely a whisper against the backdrop of encroaching silence.
“I…” I read his lips as he attempted to speak, but his words were lost as a dark haze began to envelop him.
The finality of the moment was underscored by the relentless ticking of the clock, a reminder of time slipping away and the inevitability of our separation.
“...love…” His final word was a fragment of his essence, a parting gift as the darkness claimed him.
“I love you, too,” I whispered, my voice trembling with emotion as I closed my eyes, surrendering to the profound sense of loss and the lingering hope that, despite everything, our paths would somehow cross again.
