Chapter 15: Half Truth.

I looked at Mr. Ivan and his companions, my eyes narrowing slightly as I tried to read between the lines. "I appreciate the information you've provided, but I have to ask...why are you helping me with this? What's your stake in this case?"
Mr. Ivan chuckled, a low, smooth sound that seemed to fill the room. "Oh, Detective. You're a clever one, aren't you? Always looking for the angle, the motive. But let's just say that our interests align with yours, for now. We want to see justice served, just like you do."
I raised an eyebrow, skeptical. "And what about Gabriel's death? Do you have anything to do with that?" I asked, my tone firm but controlled.
Mr. Ivan's smile faltered for a moment, and I detected a flicker of something in his eyes. It was a brief moment of uncertainty, a hint of vulnerability. But he quickly regained his composure, and his expression turned neutral once more.
"Gabriel's death was a tragedy, Detective. A terrible loss for his family and friends. But I'm afraid we can't comment on that right now," he said, his voice smooth but evasive.
I pressed on, my tone firm but polite. "And what about Max? The third brother of the Thompson's family? Do you know anything about that?"
Mr. Ivan's expression turned neutral, but I detected a hint of tension in his body language. He seemed to be choosing his words carefully, weighing each response before speaking.
"I'm afraid we don't have any information about that, Detective. But I'm sure you'll get to the bottom of it," he said, his voice calm but unconvincing.
I turned my attention to Mrs. Daisy, who had been quietly observing the conversation. She seemed to be watching me with a mixture of curiosity and wariness, her eyes darting between me and Mr. Ivan.
"And what about Emma, the housemaid? What did she do to lose her Life as well?, How does she got involved?. Does she know something about Gabriel's death?" I asked, my tone gentle but probing.
Mrs. Daisy's eyes darted to Mr. Ivan, who nodded slightly. "Emma is a loyal employee, Detective. She's been with the Thompson family for many years. But I'm afraid she's not privy to any information that would be relevant to your investigation," she said, her voice soft but firm.
I leaned forward, my eyes locked on Mr. Ivan. "Look, I appreciate your help, but I need to know what's going on here. What's the real reason you're helping me with this information? Are you trying to cover your tracks, or is there something more at play?"
Mr. Ivan leaned back in his chair, a small smile playing on his lips. "I think you're getting ahead of yourself, Detective. Just focus on the information we've provided, and you'll get to understand what we're doing soon enough. And as for Mr. X...well, let's just say that you'll get to meet him soon enough, when you've completed the case."
I felt a surge of frustration, but I knew I had to keep pushing. "What do you mean, 'when I've completed the case'? What's the endgame here?" I asked, my tone firm but controlled.
Mr. Ivan's smile grew wider, and he leaned forward, his eyes glinting with intensity. "All in good time, Detective. All in good time. Just trust us, and you'll see. We're not trying to obstruct justice, but rather...facilitate it."
I raised an eyebrow, skeptical. "Facilitate it? What does that even mean?" I asked, my tone incredulous.
Mr. Ivan chuckled again, a low, smooth sound that seemed to fill the room. "You'll see, Detective. You'll see. Just keep following the trail, and you'll get to the truth. And when you do...well, let's just say that you'll be surprised."
I leaned back in my chair, my mind racing with possibilities. What was going on here? What was THE ORGANIZATION's real motive for helping me with this case? And who was Mr. X, really? I knew I had to keep pushing, to keep digging, until I uncovered the truth. But for now, I had to trust that Mr. Ivan and his companions were telling me the truth...or at least, part of it.
As I left the warehouse, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was in over my head. The case was getting more complicated by the minute, and I was starting to suspect that there were more players involved than I had initially thought. But I was determined to see it through, no matter what lay ahead. I was going to uncover the truth, no matter how long it took.
As I walked through the front door of my house, I was greeted by the warm glow of the living room lamp. My wife, Mary, was sitting on the couch, her eyes fixed on me with a mixture of concern and curiosity. She had a book in her lap, but it was clear she hadn't been reading it for a while. I knew I was late, and I could tell she had been waiting up for me.
"Hey, hon," I said, trying to sound as nonchalant as possible. "I'm sorry I'm so late. I got held up at work."
Mary raised an eyebrow, her expression skeptical. "Work? At this hour?" she asked, her voice soft but probing. She set the book aside and leaned forward, her eyes never leaving mine.
I sighed, knowing I had to explain myself. "I had a meeting, Mary. A crucial one. I couldn't miss it if I wanted to solve this case." I walked over to the couch and sat down beside her, taking her hand in mine.
Mary's eyes narrowed, her interest piqued. "What case? You've been working on that Thompson thing for weeks. What's going on?" She asked, her voice filled with concern.
I took a deep breath, trying to summarize the events of the evening. "I met with some people from THE ORGANIZATION. They're involved in the Thompson case, and they had some information that could help me crack it." I paused, collecting my thoughts.
Mary's expression turned serious. "THE ORGANIZATION? What are they involved in?" She asked, her voice laced with a hint of fear.
I hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. "I'm not entirely sure, Mary. But they seem to be connected to the Thompson family in some way. And they're willing to help me, but only if I play by their rules." I said, trying to reassure her.
Mary's eyes widened, her concern evident. "Play by their rules? What does that mean?" She asked, her voice trembling slightly.
I shook my head, trying to reassure her. "I don't know, Mary. But I have to trust them, at least for now. They have information that could help me solve this case, and I need to follow every lead I can." I said, trying to sound confident.
Mary nodded, her expression understanding. "I trust you, hon. You know what you're doing. But be careful, okay? I don't want anything to happen to you." She said, her voice filled with emotion.
I smiled, feeling a surge of gratitude towards my wife. "I will, Mary. I promise. I'll be careful." I said, squeezing her hand.
As we talked, I glanced around the room, noticing that our daughters, Emily and Sophia, were fast asleep in their bedrooms. I felt a pang of guilt for being so late, but I knew I had to prioritize the case. I had to think about the bigger picture, and how my work could impact the community.
"Thanks for waiting up for me, Mary," I said, feeling a sense of relief. "I know it's late, but I appreciate your support."
Mary smiled, her eyes warm with love. "Anytime, hon. That's what I'm here for. Now, get some rest. You've got a big day ahead of you tomorrow." She said, leaning in to kiss me.
I nodded, feeling a sense of exhaustion wash over me. I knew I had a long day ahead of me, but with Mary's support, I felt like I could tackle anything. I stood up, pulling Mary to her feet, and we walked together to the bedroom, ready to face whatever the next day would bring.
As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was in for a wild ride. The case was getting more complicated by the minute, and I was starting to suspect that there were more players involved than I had initially thought. But with Mary's support, I knew I could handle whatever came my way. I was ready to face the challenges ahead, and bring justice to the Thompson family.
