Chapter 78: The Moonlight Ends.
Upon our arrival at the mansion, Venn stepped out first and offered his hand to help me down.
“Are you trying to be a gentleman, or is it just an act? HAHAHA,” I teased him playfully.
“What do you want me to do? Drop you? It’s clear that you’ve already fallen for me,” he shot back, eliciting laughter from the two lovebirds behind us.
“Uyyy! Look at Bessy, all giddy and excited, HAHHAHA,” Joy chimed in, further teasing.
“Oh, come on! Enough with the teasing already!” I mockingly scolded them, rolling my eyes before making my way inside the mansion.
But then, something struck me—why was it so dark? What was happening?
I pressed on, heading straight for the living room, only to find it empty. Where was everyone? I glanced back at the door when suddenly the television flickered on, revealing my dad on the screen.
“D-Dad,” I stammered, feeling an overwhelming rush of emotions as tears began streaming down my face.
He lay in a hospital bed, numerous tubes and IV drips attached to him. He looked so frail, almost like a wilted plant, and beside him was a speaker. A nurse waved at me and pressed play.
“M-My princess, I-I'm so sorry that I hid this from you. I-I’m sorry for lying to you. I even told Rhanzie, yes, I knew she came back to be with you until I decided to take my medications. I pretended I got the Eco'Casa, yes, my child, please forgive me. I tested Venn to see what he could do for you amidst the trials you've faced with him, and I commend him because he never left your side. I want a man who can fight for you, love you, and be there for you.”
I struggled to process his words. A heavy weight began to settle in my chest, and I felt numb all over. Why did he have to say these things? And why did he need to test Venn?
“I know you have many questions, but I won’t be able to answer all of them because after the surgery, I won’t be able to talk. I won’t be able to walk, to run, or do the usual things a strong person can do because of my chronic conditions and heart failure. But your mom insisted I should go through with the surgery rather than die early.” My tears flowed freely now, and I lost my balance.
“Sh*t! That was close, Chian,” Venn murmured as he pulled me close, offering me his strength.
Words escaped me as I let my tears pour silently, wrapped in his comforting embrace.
“My princess, you’re already of legal age, and I know you love each other. You’re technically married to him, but I want to see you walking down the aisle, getting married for real, with love,” he said amid his own sobs, leaving me choked up. The screen went dark as my father's message ended.
“There, there, my moon. We’ll get there, okay?” Venn promised, hugging me tightly as if to convey that everything would turn out alright.
He helped me to my feet, gently wiping my tears and giving me a reassuring smile.
“How are you still beautiful after crying? But of course, you’re the most beautiful when you put a bright smile on that lovely face, my moon.” He smiled warmly at me.
“I don’t know whether to feel flattered or to give you a playful slap,” I replied, half-annoyed but unable to suppress my smile as I stood up.
He stood alongside me, interlocking our fingers before he guided me toward the car. I stared blankly ahead while he buckled my seatbelt with the utmost care before planting a quick kiss on my forehead. “I love you,” he whispered. That simple confession made me smile widely as he started driving.
“Wait, I thought we were going to the hospital? Where exactly are we going, Venn?” I asked, raising an eyebrow in curiosity.
“Moon, just trust me on this,” he replied with a charming smile.
When the car finally came to a stop, it dawned on me that we had arrived at our hotel, the Derovloux Hotel. Why were we here?
As Venn parked in front of the entrance, he quickly exited the car and opened my door, helping me out while handing the car keys to the valet. We were greeted by several exuberant hotel staff members, their smiles wide and inviting. What was going on?
“Welcome to Derovloux Hotel, Mr. and Mrs. Valorous,” they cheered in unison. I returned their greeting with a shy smile.
Then, two elegantly dressed individuals approached me, and I couldn’t help but think that their sophisticated attire indicated they were perhaps fashion designers.
“Good morning, Mrs. Valorous! I’m Ezra Chandler, one of the prominent designers from Paris,” one of them introduced herself, beaming.
“And this is Jessie Chan from my team. We’re here to design your wedding gown,” she continued. “We’ve brought several of our renowned wedding gowns that we believe will look stunning on you. You’ll have the final choice, so please follow our lead,” she said politely.
Wait—didn’t we just leave the hospital? Wasn’t that where we were supposed to be? Oh my God! I glanced back at Venn, who allowed me to follow Ezra, yet my heart raced, and everything started to feel surreal.
Venn…
The staff…
Flowers…
Oh my gosh!
I was soon taken by surprise.
There stood Venn amidst the hotel staff, surrounded by flower petals arranged in a heart shape. He held a bouquet of roses, while the staff carried a banner that read:
*“Moon, can you be my moonlight every night and I’ll be your sunlight when the skies are bright? To the moon and back, till death do us part?”*
A whirlwind of emotions flooded me—just moments before, I had been the one proposing, and now it was his turn. The banner made me want to laugh and cry simultaneously. Where in the world did he come up with that poem?
“I remember you wrote my intended activity, and I’m grateful for that. From that day on, I didn’t understand why you would occupy my thoughts so much—you’ve had my mind racing since the day I saw you. It may sound cliché, but you make my heart race. Day by day, just seeing you makes my day complete.” He confessed, not paying mind to the murmurs of the staff around us.
He melted my heart; he was the first person to ever make me feel this way.
“Until the day we found out about our arranged marriage, I didn’t mean to upset you, and I apologize for my behavior that day. It was not that I didn’t like you; it was that I wanted us to have the wedding of your dreams.” His words left me speechless, hiding in the corner with tears of joy.
He took a few steps closer, kneeling down on one knee, producing a small box. I heard gasps and murmurs of astonishment behind me as he opened it. Inside was a gold ring with a brilliant white diamond in the center—our names engraved on it.
“Moon, can you be my moonlight every night and I’ll be your sunlight when the skies are bright? To the moon and back, till death do us part?” His eyes glimmered with unshed tears, yet he held himself together.
“I’ll be your moon! YES! I’ll marry you, Venn. I love you!” I sobbed, enveloping him in a fierce embrace.
The sound of applause surrounded us, but something caught my eye—my dad and mom were there. Dad sat in his wheelchair, while Mom supported him on its handle. And then there was my brother, smiling and giving me a thumbs-up.
I spotted Joy on the right side, standing with her fiancé, Joshua. I was genuinely happy for her too; she had found her one true love.
As I walked down the aisle with my parents by my side, I found myself wondering about the years ahead. What would my life look like fifty years from now? Would I walk in my mother’s shoes? How many children would we have? All I could foresee was a beautiful life with Venn for the rest of our days.
I understood that this was not the end of my journey; it was merely the beginning of a new chapter with Mr. Ellinox Venn Valorous—my husband.
