52. Understanding and Kisses
DANTE
That morning, he woke up with a terrible headache. If it was because he was constantly thinking of Genesis or because he was not getting enough sleep, he did not know. Deep down, he knew what the cause of his pain was. The reason for his lack of sleep was Genesis.
For days, she had been on his mind more than usual. He was scared of what the things she was keeping from him could be, but he was also concerned for her. She walked around the house like a shadow of herself and she only smiled when she was around Elon.
Sometimes, when they spoke, she would also try to smile, but it never reached her eyes. He was sure that she only did that to ease his nerves, but what she did not know was that it was not working. So to distract himself from the disturbing thoughts of his wife that was acting strange, he would either bury himself in work or take a long cold shower.
And he was just stepping out of the shower when his phone began to ring. He groaned in frustration as he grabbed his white towel and wrapped it around his waist. As soon as he picked up his phone and read the name of the caller, a deep frown appeared on his face and his mood turned sour.
Lately, it was people he really did not want to be talking to that kept on calling him. First, it was his father; now, it was his father in-law. He sighed and picked the call then pressed the phone against his ear.
“What?” His voice was bland.
“It is me, your father in—-”
“I know exactly who I am speaking with.” Dante did not let him finish. “What do you want?”
“Look, it has been years since she died, and you are still holding so much hate for us in your heart. Why not just let it go?”
“I cannot let it go.” Dante said to the man. “I will never let it go.”
“It was not even our fault, Dante. It—”
“Whose fault was it then?” Dante questioned as anger began to rise in him. “You let her come see you in Mexico knowing fully well that your blood thirsty rivals were out to get you and your family. So whose fault was it? Tell me.”
“I just wanted to see my daughter…” The man's voice was now low and wistful.
“At the cost of her own life?” Dante scoffed. “Why could you not come down here? Instead, you let us go all the way to Mexico without saying a word to us about what was going on.”
“I'm sorry—”
“That would not bring Evelyn back, would it?”
“I just want to see my grandson, please.” The old man sounded desperate. “He's the only part of her that we have left.”
“There's no way in hell I'll let you near my son.” Dante declared. “Just forget that you have a grandchild somewhere.”
“Please, Dante…” The man pleaded. “I'll come over, I'll fly down and—”
“And security will escort you out of the premises.” Dante said with a hard tone. “So save yourself the stress and embarrassment and leave me and my son alone.”
“Dante, Evelyn would have never liked this. You know that.”
“I also know that she would have never liked her son being near people that would put his life at risk. And I'm making sure that that never happens.” Dante paused for two seconds. “Again, leave me and my son alone.”
“Dante, please—”
“I am very sure that you are not hard of hearing.” He was beginning to get frustrated now. “You will never see Elon again and there's nothing you can do about that.”
“Dan—”
Before the man could say another word, he dropped the call and flinged his phone on the bed. Now, his day was starting on a horrible note, and he really hoped that it was not going to get any worse than that.
But luck seemed to be very far from him when he hit his little toe at the corner of his bed frame. He groaned in pain as he plopped on the bed and held up his foot. There was already a bruise on the little toe and it hurt like hell.
“Well, great…” He said to himself. “The day's already started off on a horrible note.”
Then he heard a knock on his door and almost screamed at whoever it was to go away and let him be. But he managed to tame his anger and secure his towel properly around his waist, then he went to open the door.
Genesis's face was revealed when he swung the door open and all the anger in his chest immediately melted away. She was looking up at him with her doe eyes and he found it impossible to still be angry when she was looking at him like that.
“Um…” He cleared his throat. “Good morning.”
“Good morning.” She responded with a little smile. “I came to let you know that breakfast is ready. Elon and I are waiting for you at the table.”
“Oh okay. Thank you. I'll just put on some clothes now.” He told her. “I'll be there in a jiffy.”
“Alright.”
He nodded, and as he was about to shut the door, she held it and pushed it wider.
“Do you want to say something else?” He asked her. “Or you need something?”
“I want to say something.”
“I'm listening.”
“I'm sorry this is happening to us because of me.” She let out a heavy exhale. “I'm really sorry.”
“Look, I understand—” He paused suddenly and spoke again. “Actually, I do not understand. I am very scared and confused, Genesis. I wish you would just talk to me about what is going on, but you have insisted that now is not the right time to tell, and I'm willing to respect your decision. So it's okay.”
“I'm sorry, Dante…”
“And I said that it's okay.” He reached out and stroked her cheek, then he tucked some strands of her hair behind her ear. “It's alright.”
And there were like that for a few seconds, until he could no longer resist the urge to kiss her as he captured her lips with his. She inhaled sharply when he grabbed her by the waist and pulled her closer but she still wrapped her hands around his neck, kissing back with as much needed as he was her.
He missed this, having her in his arms like this. Even though they had never gone further than kissing with each other, he was still content with this. He wished that they could continue like this without a care in the world. But even the pleasure they got from this little moment was not going to be enough to get them back to where they once were.
Soon, to his own dismay, she pulled out of the kiss and rested her head on his chest as she tried to catch her breath. He settled his chin on the top of her head and enveloped her in a tight embrace. He really wished that he did not have to let her go.
“I have to go back downstairs.” She said to him, “Elon is still waiting.”
“Alright.” Was his response. But he still did not let go of her.
She was the one that eventually pulled out of the hug and took a step back. “Put on some clothes and join us quickly, okay?”
“Okay…” He breathed.
Then she turned and walked away. He stood there like that for a few seconds, still feeling her lips on his. There was a longing he felt in her absence, his chest felt empty and he wanted to be near her again already. So he went and put on the first set of clothes that his hands could reach and ran downstairs for breakfast.Download Novelah App
