63: Chapter Sixty-Three

It’s been two days, and my wife is still unconscious. She’s still at the ICU and being monitored. Today, I have to attend a meeting. As much as I want to stay by Savannah’s side, I also have responsibilities as the company’s CEO.
“Sir, Cameron? Sir?” I got back to my senses when I heard my name being called. I sat up straight and awkwardly faked a coughed.
“Sorry, what were you saying again?”
“I was mentioning the target raise in revenue for this year. I was asking if the stated numbers are ideal or realistic to you, sir.”
“Oh, uhm,” I scanned the document in my hands. “We should lower it by two percent. Also, I received the investment offered by CXX in Hawaii. I never heard this company before, but the investment price they mentioned is too high for me to assume that they are an unknown company.”
“CXX is an underground company, illegal for short. It’s actually CVX but they changed it to CXX when they handed us their proposal. I found the name and proposal suspicious too, like you did, so I did some digging and found out that they run an underground business under the name CVX,” my sister explained.
“Underground?”
“More likely, they could be a syndicate or even a mafia. That’s everything I have. I found no further information about them. Also, this wasn’t the first time we received a proposal from an underground company, but CXX stands out.”
“In what way?”
“Well, the other underground proposals were project proposals, asking us to invest on their certain projects which, obviously, is illegal, but CXX offered us an investment. They want to own about 4 to 4.5 percent of shares with no conditions. That’s why I found it suspicious.”
That’s weird. Why would they buy shares with no conditions? Also, an underground company risking to be exposed just to buy shares from us? Why?
The meeting continued but my phone suddenly started ringing. I immediately answered it after reading the caller ID.
“Hello?”
[C-Cameron... S-Savannah...]
With no further words, I quickly ran and left the company. I drove as fast as I can to the hospital and ran to the ICU.
I saw Savannah’s mother crying, and Skyler hugging her, outside the ICU. I approached them anxiously.
“What happened?” I asked. They turned to me while crying.
“S-Savannah’s heart started to s-stop,” my mother-in-law said. I felt like my own heart stopped too. I tried my best to calm myself and wait to hear directly from the doctor.
Few moments later, the doctor came out of the ICU.
“What happened to my wife?”
“She’s back on being stable. Her heart rate dropped, but we managed to stop her from having another cardiac arrest. Unfortunately, we still can’t transfer her to a regular ward and we have to keep on monitoring her.”
“What is seriously wrong with her?! Didn’t you say that the operation was successful?!” I frustratedly shouted.
“Yes, we successfully removed the bullet. However, the bullet was near in a crucial area of her body. A vein was fractured and it almost reached her lungs. It was a difficult operation that one wrong move could end her life. It still ended successfully, but she lost too much blood and the wound from the bullet is also the main reason why she is still at a critical condition. We will continue to monitor her.”
“STOP MONITORING HER AND DO SOMETHING!”
“Cameron, calm down.”
“Sorry, the only thing we could do as of the moment is to monitor her. The operation was successful, and her, waking up, will depend on her own recovery system and body. If you may excuse me.” The doctor left and I punched the wall to vent out my frustration.
“Being frustrated wouldn’t wake your wife up.”
“The what should I do?! I can’t even vent out my anger towards the perpetrator because he’s dead!” Savannah’s mother just hugged me.
“Savannah... isn’t someone who’ll give up her life easily. Can’t you see? She keeps fighting death. She’ll probably wake up soon. I’m having a tough time too, as her mother, but I know I have to stay strong for her. She would throw a tantrum if she finds out that I didn’t take care of you while she’s asleep.” She lets go of me and smiled.
“My sister... is probably fighting with the grim reaper. He’ll eventually give up on my sister’s attitude and will send her back to earth soon. The grim reapers wouldn’t be able to stand her, being a bitch, so they’ll get tired and wake her up. So, let’s just wait for her to come back."
What they said somehow made me lessen my frustrations and calm down. I wore the protective gown, gloves and mask before entering the ICU. I sat beside the bed, and held my wife’s hand.
“Are you really fighting with the grim reapers? Your brother, Skyler, said that. I wish you really are. Make them tired of your attitude so they would bring you back to me. Don’t give up just yet, okay? We still need to prepare for Aviana’s first birthday party, and also eventually give her a sibling.”
I paused for a moment as I fix her hair that is covering some part of her face.
“Babe, I’m sorry but I have to be gone for two days. I have to attend a business conference out of the town. I want you to be awake when I get back. Honestly, I want to be the first person you see the moment you open your eyes, but I also want you to wake up as fast as you could. Don’t wait for me to comeback, or, maybe wake up now? Also, don’t worry about Aviana, she’s safe and doing fine at home with my mom and Clarisse. Just wake up, and don’t worry about anything.”
I had to leave to prepare for the two-days business conference. I honestly don’t want to leave, but I still have to. I just hope that when I get back, a healthy and awake Savannah would hug and welcome me.
