Chapter five

Uhmm, sir, I think we need to talk." I finally speak up.
He gently places his magazine on the table next to him and looks up at me with his glass-covered eyes.
Gosh! I feel so intimidated right now, but I've got to keep a neutral face.
It's a serious matter at hand.
"About what exactly?" he asks, sounding so calm.
Is he really kidding me?
Has he forgotten what he has done?
And that too, so soon.
That made me feel infuriated.
"About me being your wife, sir, why did you do that? I suddenly found the courage to confront him.
He took a deep breath and kept staring at me for what seemed like an eternity, but it was just a few seconds.
"Why did you do it, sir? I need answers." I ask again.
If he keeps ignoring me like that, I think I might have to force the truth out of his mouth.
As if.
He took a deep breath again, but this time he actually opened his mouth like he was about to speak.
Finally.
"What's that in your finger?" he asks.
Which finger exactly?
"Which finger, sir?" I asked impatiently.
"The one on your left hand," he answers.
I actually had to lift my hand up, and there it was, the ring that he gave me, still laying in my hand, fitting so perfectly.
But what does that have to do with my question?
"It's a ring, sir, but what does..."
"And where is that ring placed?" he asks again.
Ok, this man is crazy; that's a fact.
"In the fourth finger of my hand," I answer.
"Exactly, so do you not know what that means?" he asks.
He is giving me a knowing look, but nothing rings a bell in my head.
No, sir, answered
He got up from his seat and walked over to the entrance leading to the balcony.
It took him another millennium to finally speak again.
"This finger in question is also known as the ring finger; I'm sure you must have heard of that," he says.
I nodded.
And so what?
"Which means that you are presently wearing my ring on that finger, and guess what? That makes you my wife." He turns to look at me.
I can literally feel the blood draining from my face.
I don't think I am also able to breathe, or am I?
"This is completely absurd, sir, I manage to say.
"Don't you also think that this is illegal? I ask.
"Did I force you to put on the ring?" he asks.
"No but..."
"And did you object when I was putting it in?" He asks again.
No," I answer.
"And did you accept it because, if I wasn't mistaken, I actually saw you admiring it?" he says.
"Yes, I actually liked it back then, but I didn't know that it was a wedding ring; otherwise, I wouldn't have accepted it," I say.
"Well, what has happened, and now you have to accept the truth, that you are my wife? he punctuated every word.
That's it.
I furiously got up from the bed.
"Well, I do not accept this, and there is no way this is going to happen," I say furiously, shunning the fact that he was my teacher and my elder for the time being.
I lifted up my hand and saw the ring, still sparkling and catching the attention of its onlookers, like it actually belonged there, but I of all people should know it doesn't.
Without thinking twice, I reach out to remove the ring and put an end to all this drama.
If he claims that the ring is what ties us together, then it would do good to separate us.
But then the ring just wouldn't come off.
It's like it has been carved to be in my hand and never to be removed.
"You damn ring! Just come off already," I say angrily.
I kept on trying for a few times until the finger turned red, and if I continued, there was a possibility that I would hurt myself.
I looked up at him and saw that he was just standing there, inspecting me.
He is the root cause of this thing, so he should rectify it, and we'll be on our way.
Well, at least until the field trip's over.
"With all due respect, sir, take back your ring; I don't want it anymore," I say, pointing the finger at me.
He took his time to inspect my face and my body, but I just couldn't find any emotions on his face, so I didn't know what exactly he was thinking.
"And what if I don't want to?" he asks.
Gosh! It's times like these that I wish I had my phone with me.
I would have just browsed for a solution.
But it seems like I didn't need the Internet for this one, and luckily, a solution came along.
I turned around and headed straight to the bathroom door, but before I could enter, he spoke again.
"If you know what's good for you, I'll suggest that you leave this ring where it belongs, or else you'll come to regret it later," he says, making me stop in my tracks.
I turn around to see the serious look on his face.
There is not an ounce of humor.
What does he mean by that, though?
What does he intend to do to me if I remove it?
My stubborn, clouded head couldn't come up with an answer, and so I lifted my hand to try and pull it out again.
And that's when it dawned on me.
The worst thing that he could ever do to me is to leave me here, all alone.
Wait! Can he actually do that?
I looked up at him again, and I saw the determination in his eyes that tells me that he can do anything that he puts his mind to.
Fine, then, I give up.
If that's what it's going to be, then let it be.
I walked back to the bed, feeling dejected.
He has won this round, but I would definitely get to have the last laugh in this fight.
Just wait until we go back to school; I won't hesitate even for a minute to report him for his misbehavior and have him punished.
But for now, he can have the upper hand.
"Great choice." I heard his voice from behind me, but I chose to ignore him.
For thirty minutes, I lay there, unable to sleep, as I was just waiting to see when he'd try to come up to the bed.
"You can sleep in the tent; I'll sleep on the balcony," he says.
Wait, did I hear him right?
Is he actually going to let me sleep here?
Great!
At least I'll have some time to myself.
"Good night," he says.
"Good night," I mumbled, not even caring to look back at him.
And then I heard him open the door to the balcony, and soon it was closed.
"There is only one blanket here, so what is he going to use? I ask.
And what if a mosquito bites him?
I heard that there are a lot of them out here.
Maybe I should just call him back.
And ask him to sleep where exactly?
Well, I'm sure he can figure it out by himself.
With that thought in my mind, I drift off to sleep.
