Chapter Thirty Three

 Day 5
Professor Abraham
I woke up early in the morning to find her sound asleep, and that made me feel relieved.
But I could still feel the fever radiating through her body to mine.
It's morning already, and the rain has finally stopped, so I decided to get up and find the doctor so that she can be attended to.
I slowly get up from the bed after I have gently placed her head back on the pillow so as not to wake her up.
I pick up my shirt and put it back on before heading out.
The place is so gutted with water all over that a person has to be careful not to fall into a puddle or slip by mistake.
There's no one outside as well, and the place is really quiet.
Who would be stupid enough to come out in this cold?.
The rain might have stopped falling, but it's still drizzling, and this type of rain could easily make a person sick.
I head straight to the doctor's tent.
We have actually arranged for a health care team as well, just in case any student gets into an accident or falls ill.
I walked into the room without even bothering to knock, which was rude of me, I thought.
So, I turn to walk back because I don't know just what condition she might be in.
"Professor, good morning. Sorry it took me so long to finish in the bathroom. I hope you didn't wait too long." she asks.
It seems like she doesn't even care that I'm in the middle of her tent, unannounced.
But could you blame anyone? There's no doorbell for you to knock on.
"No, I just came in," I answer.
She is currently standing in her towel, and she doesn't even look bothered that I was here.
Not that I bother too, as we are both professional people, but others might tend to get the wrong idea.
"Uhmm, I'll wait outside for you to get ready," I say.
"You can stay; I don't mind; I'll be quick; I hope it's not an emergency," she asks.
"One of the students got a cold, huh! It's bound to happen because of the rain yesterday," she says, and she quickly pulls in her dress.
"Uhmm, it's Nina."
She looks up to me, as she has no idea who Nina is.
"My wife," I add.
"Oh my goodness! I hope it's not serious," she says in a worried tone and quickly rushes out with me.
"How is her condition now? Is it serious?" she asks.
"I don't know, actually, but she is burning with a fever," I answer.
"And she seemed to have lost her consciousness as well," I say as we are walking into our tent.
As soon as we entered, I saw her lying by the bathroom door, and she looked like she was throwing up.
"Oh Lord! She's vomiting already; come quick." I rush over to her, waiting for the doctor to reach us.
I hold her by the shoulder while I use one of my hands to rub her back.
She is just hurling, but nothing is coming out of it.
I pull her hair away so that she won't soil it.
Soon, she seemed to have stopped throwing up, and she dropped her head on my shoulder and started crying.
This made my heart break. I could only imagine the pain she is going through now.
"Shh! It's going to be okay," I try to pacify her.
I carry her bridal style, not caring about her shirt that's ruined, and it might ruin mine as well.
I place her on the toilet seat, and then I clean up her face.
But she still needs to clean up and change.
I quickly rushed out of the bathroom to get her stuff.
"How's she now, Prof?" the doctor asks.
"I don't know," I answer, my voice strained.
It's just so heartbreaking to see her like that, and knowing that I can't do anything to ease the pain away, it breaks my heart even more.
I pick out a dress from her clothes, and then I pick up her brush as well.
"If you need any help, please let me know," the doctor called out, but I just shrugged her off because I was thinking about how she was doing now. I have left her for way too long.
She is still sitting on the toilet seat, with her head supported by the WC head.
She looks so frail and pale.
One would think she has been sick for ages, not just one day.
"Here, can you brush your teeth? I'll prepare a hot bath for you," I say.
I was even doubting if she could even do that on her own.
The way she looked up at me with her hooded eyes assured me she couldn't.
So I just decided to help her with that as well.
After I had brushed her teeth to reduce the bitterness of the vomit, I went on to prepare her bath.
I remove her shirt that has been ruined, and I try to give her a bath with her shorts on.
I'll remove it after I'm done.
I made sure to clean her up carefully, and then I changed her clothes.
I pick her up again, walk her back to the room, and gently place her on the bed.
The doctor quickly walks over to examine her.
Oh Lord! Please let her be well.
"I think she's dehydrated; we need to put her under drip at the moment," she says, looking at me as if she is asking for permission.
Of course, she can do whatever she wants as long as it brings her back to health.
I nodded at her.
She presents her bag, which she is carrying. She opens the bag, and soon she starts working, and in no time, she has placed her under drip and given her some injections as well.
I look down at her, and I can see her eyes closing, as if she is trying to fall asleep again.
"We need to run more tests on her," the doctor says, bringing my attention back to her.
"Ok," I answer.
She nodded at me and then pulled out her test stuff.
I just sit down on the bed, watching her as she sleeps.
At least she wouldn't be able to feel much pain while she was sleeping.
The doctor brought out some syringes and drew her blood.
"I am also going to need her urine sample," she says.
"Are you going to run some urinalysis tests as well?" I ask.
She gave me a weird look, but soon it was off her face.
"No, I'm going to take a pregnancy test on her; there might be a possibility that she is pregnant, and the best sample for the test is the urine," she answers.
If we were not in a dire situation right now, then I would have laughed at her face.
How could she even be pregnant? I'm sure she hasn't been touched by another man.
I can't actually be certain, but I know that she hasn't been intimate with anyone since we were together.
But the doctor doesn't know that. To her, she is just my wife, and it's a common thing for a wife to be pregnant, right?.
"I don't think that's necessary," I say.
"Why?" she asks.
I don't have the answer to that.
She must have seen the discomfort in my face as she started speaking softly.
"Prof, I'm not saying that she is actually pregnant; it might be another disease as well, but all indications of her symptoms are showing that she might possibly be pregnant," she says.
I just don't know what to say to her now.
"But the blood will do for now," she says.
"Ok, I'll be heading out to start running the tests, and I'll get back to you, and if she wakes up or anything else happens, don't hesitate to give me a call as well," she says as she starts packing up her stuff.
I walk her out of the tent.
"Thank you so much, doctor," I thank her.
"You don't have to thank me; I'm just doing my job," she says before walking away.
I walk back into the room and head straight to the bathroom.
I clean up the mess that she made, and then I wash off her clothes.
After that, I take my bath and walk out.
She is still sleeping peacefully as I walk out.
I place my hand on her forehead, and lucky enough, the fever has subsided.
Checking my watch, I see that it's fifteen minutes past eight.
I'm sure all are waiting for me to address them for the day.
"I'll be back in a jiffy; make sure you'll be okay, alright?" I say, even though I know she can't hear me.
I lean down and place a kiss on her forehead.
With that, I got up and left the room, but my mind is still with her completely.
I just hope she doesn't wake up while I'm away.
