CHAPTER 15: Deadly Heart

Ares entered Fiona's office, the soft glow of her desk lamp casting eerie shadows on the walls. Ares, the one she hired to know more about Anthony, sat behind her desk, her brows furrowed in concentration as she pored over a file.
"What news do you bring, Ares?" Fiona asked, her voice cutting through the silence like a knife.
Ares cleared his throat nervously, adjusting his glasses. "I've dug as deep as I could, Fiona, but there's nothing. No other background on Anthony Moore. It's like he doesn't exist."
Fiona's suspicion prickled at the edges of her mind. Anthony, that had appeared out of nowhere, his motives shrouded in secrecy. All of the plan had been failed when he came, And now, with Ares' revelation, Fiona's unease only deepened.
"No background?" Fiona echoed, her tone incredulous. "That's impossible. Everyone leaves a trail, Ares. Everyone."
He nodded, "I know, Fiona, but I've checked every database, every record. There's nothing."
"A ghost, you say?" she mused, her mind racing with possibilities. "Or perhaps something more sinister."
A tense silence settled over the room as Fiona and Ares exchanged a meaningful glance. The pieces of the puzzle were falling into place, revealing a picture neither of them had anticipated.
"Keep digging, Ares," Fiona commanded, her voice a steely edge. "There's more to Anthony Moore than meets the eye, and I intend to uncover the truth, no matter the cost."
With a determined nod, Ares turned on his heel and left the room, leaving Fiona alone with her thoughts.
As Fiona pondered the enigma that was Anthony Moore, a resolve grew within her. If he was intent on making everyone a fool, then she would play the part with all the finesse and cunning at her disposal.
"I will dance in the shadows," Fiona whispered to herself, her voice barely audible in the stillness of her office. "If Anthony thinks he can outwit me, he's sorely mistaken."
Fiona briskly stepped out of her office, her mind preoccupied with the day's tasks. She nodded to Axel, her faithful assistant, signaling for him to follow her. Together, they made their way down the corridor, their footsteps echoing against the polished floors.
As they reached the door, Fiona froze in her tracks, her eyes narrowing at the sight before her. There, standing in front of her, was the man she had fired just a week ago. He looked disheveled, his clothes rumpled, and desperation etched on his face.
"Fiona, please, just hear me out," the man pleaded, his voice tinged with desperation.
Fiona rolled her eyes, her irritation bubbling to the surface. "What do you want now?" she snapped, her tone sharp and unforgiving.
The man took a step forward, his hands trembling slightly. "I know I messed up, but I can change. Please, give me another chance, I won't be a failure again." he implored, his eyes pleading for mercy.
Axel shifted uncomfortably beside Fiona, unsure of how to intervene in the tense situation unfolding before him.
She sighed heavily, pinching the bridge of her nose in frustration. "I'm sorry, but it's too late for second chances. You had your opportunity, and you squandered it," she replied, her voice tinged with finality.
"I know all your evil doings, Fiona. I can use it against you"
Fiona felt the weight of the man's words like a heavy shroud, each syllable a reminder of her past misdeeds. She knew he held damning evidence, secrets she thought buried deep within the recesses of her soul.
But before she could muster a response, the man lunged forward, a glint of malice in his eyes as he brandished a knife from his pocket. Instinct kicked in, and Fiona reacted without hesitation.
In one fluid motion, she reached for the hidden firearm nestled within Axel's confines, fingers closing around the cold steel of retribution. In that fleeting moment, time seemed to slow, the world reduced to the primal dance of predator and prey.
The man staggered backward, a look of shock crossing his face as the bullet found its mark. His grip on the knife faltered, and he collapsed to the ground, a pool of crimson spreading beneath him.
A mix of disgust and disbelief washing over her.
Axel stood frozen beside her, his eyes wide with shock at the sudden turn of events. But Fiona quickly composed herself, a cold smirk tugging at the corners of her lips.
"Pathetic," she spat, her voice dripping with contempt as she looked down at the man writhing in pain before her. "Did you really think you could outsmart me?"
Without a shred of remorse, she raised her gun once more and fired, ensuring that any last remnants of life were extinguished.
Turning to Axel, she met his shocked gaze with icy indifference. "Clean this up," she ordered, her voice cold and authoritative.
Axel hesitated for a moment, his eyes darting between Fiona and the lifeless body at their feet. But the steely determination in Fiona's gaze left no room for argument.
Without a word, Axel nodded silently, steeling himself for the grim task ahead. He quickly set to work, gathering supplies and disposing of the body with ruthless efficiency.
Meanwhile, Fiona busied herself with erasing any traces of the altercation, meticulously wiping down surfaces and eliminating any potential evidence. She moved with calculated precision, her mind sharp and focused on the task at hand.
As the last embers of the fire flickered and died, Fiona surveyed the scene before her with a sense of satisfaction. There was no trace left of the man who had dared to threaten her carefully constructed world.
Turning to Axel, she met his gaze with a nod of approval. "Good work," she said simply, her voice devoid of emotion.
Axel nodded in return, his expression unreadable as he processed the events that had just unfolded. But deep down, he couldn't shake the feeling that they had crossed a line.
As they left the office behind, the weight of their actions hung heavy in the air. Fiona fixed Axel with a piercing gaze, a glint of something dark and unsettling dancing in her eyes.
"You wouldn't betray me, would you, Axel?" she asked, her voice low and dangerous.
Axel swallowed hard, the weight of Fiona's words pressing down on him like a leaden blanket. But deep down, a seed of doubt had been planted, and he couldn't shake the feeling that he was treading on thin ice.
"I-I would never betray you, Fiona," Axel stammered, his voice barely above a whisper.
Fiona's lips curled into a sinister smile, a predatory gleam in her eyes.
"Good," she purred, her voice dripping with satisfaction. "Because if you ever even think about it, remember what happened to him," she added, gesturing to the charred remains of the man they had just disposed of.
Axel nodded numbly, a cold sweat breaking out across his brow. And in that moment, Axel knew that he was bound to Fiona, body and soul, until the bitter end.
