CHAPTER 17: The Silent Informant

Nestled amidst lush gardens and towering trees loomed the majestic mansion of Mr. Jaxon. Anthony, was accustomed to unexpected visitors. Thus, when the doorbell chimed, he straightened his uniform and hastened to answer.
As the door creaked open, Anthony's stoic countenance softened, yielding to a gentle smile at the sight of Fiona standing before him, her vibrant presence illuminating the doorstep like a beacon in the night.
"Good evening, Miss Fiona," he greeted warmly, his voice suffused with the comfort of familiarity.
Fiona's emerald eyes twinkled mischievously as she leaned in, her voice a melody of flirtation.
"Well, hello there, Anthony," she purred, a playful smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "Is Mr. Jaxon available to entertain a guest?"
Anthony's demeanor remained composed, unaffected by Fiona's overt charm. "I'm afraid Mr. Jaxon is currently indisposed, Miss Fiona," he replied politely, stepping aside to allow her entry. "However, I can fetch him if you so desire."
Her gaze lingered on Anthony, her playful demeanor faltering slightly at his restrained response. "Oh, that won't be necessary," she said, recovering quickly and gliding past him into the foyer. "I'm sure I can find my way around."
She explored the opulent halls of the mansion, Fiona felt Anthony's presence trailing behind her. Despite her attempts to draw him into conversation, he remained distant, his thoughts seemingly elsewhere.
"Anthony," she began, her voice echoing softly in the grandeur of the mansion. "What is it that keeps you here, serving Mr. Jaxon and Victoria day in and day out? Surely, a man of your talents could find more... stimulating pursuits."
A flicker of vulnerability betraying his composed facade. "It is not just duty that binds me to this place, Miss Fiona. There are reasons beyond the surface, reasons that anchor me here despite the allure of elsewhere."
Understanding dawned in Fiona's eyes, a newfound depth replacing her playful demeanor. "I understand," she murmured, her tone laced with empathy. "Perhaps, Anthony, we share more in common than we realize."
Sensing the shift in dynamics, Anthony closed the distance between them with deliberate steps, his movements deliberate yet gentle. Fiona's breath hitched as anticipation mingled with confusion, her cheeks flushing with a myriad of emotions. But before Anthony could speak another word, Fiona's apprehension flared, misunderstanding his intentions.
"Anthony, I... I didn't mean—" she faltered, her words fading into the air as she instinctively retreated, her heart racing with uncertainty.
With a subtle flick of his wrist, Anthony discreetly slipped a tiny voice recorder into Fiona's open shoulder bag, ensuring it nestled amongst her belongings unnoticed. His actions went unnoticed amidst the flurry of emotions, his expression remaining composed as he reassured Fiona with a reassuring smile.
"It's quite all right, Miss Fiona," he murmured soothingly, his voice a calming presence in the midst of her turmoil. "I understand completely."
As Fiona gathered her composure, Anthony discreetly withdrew, his attention already turning to the tasks awaiting him elsewhere in the mansion. Yet, beneath his composed exterior, a spark of intrigue ignited, his mind racing with the possibilities of what secrets Fiona might unwittingly reveal.
Their dialogue danced with the elegance of the chandeliers above, each word a delicate step in a waltz of emotions. But just as their connection deepened, the heavy presence of Mr. Jaxon interrupted the harmony.
His cold stare pierced through the warmth of their exchange, sending a shiver down Fiona's spine. She shifted uncomfortably, suddenly self-conscious under his scrutinizing gaze.
Anthony, greet Mr. Jaxon with a polite nod, but the tension was palpable. Fiona, torn between her desire to converse with Mr. Jaxon and her newfound closeness with Anthony, hesitated.
"We need to talk," Fiona said
Mr. Jaxon didn't make a response but instead make a signal to follow him into a private room. As they entered, the atmosphere shifted, the air thickening with unspoken words.
Her demeanor shifted from shy to serious. This was no longer a casual conversation, there were matters to discuss, secrets to uncover, and decisions to be made.
"You know what? I've been unable to gather any information regarding Anthony's background information and identity. He remains a mystery, and that concerns me greatly. You should be aware of everything that happens within these walls."
Mr. Jaxon's icy demeanor softened slightly at Fiona's earnest plea, his steely gaze softening with a hint of understanding. "I understand your concerns, Fiona. We cannot afford any more mistakes, especially with the impending illegal transaction. We lost 5 million before when the last one failed, and we cannot let history repeat itself."
She couldn't suppress a roll of her eyes as Mr. Jaxon spoke, her frustration bubbling to the surface. "Let's not forget that the reason the last transaction failed was due to your own stupidest, Mr. Jaxon. We cannot afford to repeat the same mistakes."
Mr. Jaxon bristled at Fiona's boldness, his jaw tightening with barely concealed annoyance. "Watch your tone, Fiona. You may be valuable to me, but you must know your limits."
She squared her shoulders, refusing to back down. "My limits are dictated by what's best for this organization, Mr. Jaxon. And right now, what's best is ensuring that this transaction succeeds, regardless of your ego."
The tension in the room crackled with intensity as Fiona and Mr. Jaxon locked gazes, each refusing to yield.
Mr. Jaxon's demeanor shifted as he settled into his chair, his expression turning icy once more. "Fine. Where is this transaction supposed to take place, and when?"
"It's set to happen on the first day of the month, at an undisclosed location outside the city limits."
His brow furrowed with concern as he processed the information. "The first day of the month... That doesn't give us much time to prepare. We'll need to move quickly if we're going to ensure everything goes according to plan."
"Obviously!" she stated, rolling her eyes once more
Didn't know to Fiona and Mr. Jaxon, Anthony's quick thinking had allowed him to plant a tiny voice recorder in Fiona's bag earlier. As they spoke, Anthony listened intently through the feed connected to his phone.
With each word exchanged between Fiona and Mr. Jaxon, Anthony's sense of urgency heightened. He realized the gravity of the situation and the imminent danger that lay ahead. The illegal transaction, the secrecy, the high stakes – it was all laid bare before him.
He knew he had to act fast, but he also had to tread carefully. One wrong move could jeopardize everything.
