CHAPTER 12: Foiled by Fate
As the sun dipped towards the horizon, casting long shadows across the city, Andrew found himself embroiled in a mission.
Meanwhile, in the confines of his office, Eric's restless footsteps echoed off the walls, a reflection of the urgency gnawing at his consciousness. With time slipping away like sand through his fingers and the weight of responsibility bearing down upon him, Eric knew decisive action was imperative.
With a deep breath, he reached for the phone and dialed the number of Claire Monbilt, a commander renowned for her unwavering determination and strategic prowess.
"Commander Monbilt, it's Eric," he uttered, his voice betraying the gravity of the situation as soon as she answered the call.
Claire, a seasoned commander with a reputation for cutting through the noise and getting straight to the point, wasted no time in demanding, "What's the situation, Eric?"
"Nicholas has been marked. We need to find him and Mr. Jaxon. He's slipped through our fingers one too many times. I need your expertise on this." Eric explained, his voice tense with urgency. "Anthony slipped a small locator device onto his back during their conversation."
There was a moment of silence on the other end before Claire replied, her voice firm and determined. "Consider it done. I'll gather my team and do our mission without delay."
"Thank you, Commander," Eric said gratefully before ending the call.
As Claire rallied her team and delved into the intricate web of surveillance feeds and informants, Eric and Andrew made a plan.
Time seemed to stretch endlessly as they pieced together clues and followed every lead. Finally, a breakthrough came when a blurry image caught on a street camera matched Nicholas's profile.
"We've got him," Claire relayed via text, her voice laced with a palpable sense of relief, as she look at her assembled teams, ready to spring into action.
"Where is he?" he texted back
"He's heading towards the abandoned Rustvale temple nearly outside of Metropolis city," Claire replied. "It looks like Anthony's men are waiting for him there."
Eric's urgently nodded to Andrew as he saw the text.
Under the shroud of nightfall, the desolate landscape of the abandoned Rustvale temple bore witness to Eric and Andrew's stealthy advance. Their movements as silent as whispers amidst the darkness.
The abandoned Rustvale temple, once a revered place of worship, now stands desolate on the outskirts of Metropolis City. Its crumbling pillars and overgrown courtyard tell tales of a forgotten era. The temple's remote location and neglected state make it the perfect hideout for illicit activities, away from prying eyes and the reach of law enforcement. Within its echoing halls, whispers of ancient rituals mingle with the whispers of nefarious plots, shrouding the temple in an aura of darkness that matches there intentions.
"We need to be careful, Andrew," Eric whispered, his voice barely audible in the oppressive silence. "Nicholas and his men could be lurking around any corner."
The air was thick with the scent of decay, and the only sound was the echo of their cautious footsteps.
Andrew nodded, with gun in his hand. Andrew acknowledged the peril ahead with a determined nod, his senses heightened and his nerves on edge.
Suddenly, they spotted Nicholas in the dim distance, flanked by his five henchmen. They ducked behind a crumbling pillar, listening intently to their conversation.
Nicholas, an enigmatic presence whispered to be entangled in the underworld of drugs and arms trafficking, loomed in the shadows.
Eric's eyes fixed on the shadows shifting in the darkness.
"You have what I asked for?" Nicholas's voice dripped with a sinister undertone, sending shivers cascading down Eric's spine.
The cloaked figure nodded, a glint of greed gleaming in their eyes. "Of course. But it'll cost you."
Nicholas chuckled darkly, reaching into his coat pocket to retrieve a stack of cash. "Cost is of no consequence when one craves fulfillment."
As the transaction unfolded, Andrew motioned discreetly to Eric, signaling the opportune moment to execute their plan.
With a swift and coordinated effort, they burst forth from their concealed sanctuary, weapons poised and anticipation electrifying the air.
Andrew acted swiftly, aiming his gun and firing a single shot. The bullet homed in unerringly, piercing the man's neck with deadly accuracy, swiftly incapacitating him before he could muster a defense.
Meanwhile, Eric, sensing the imminent danger, drew his firearm and fired at the three other men guarding the perimeter. The shots rang out in the night, and one by one, the men fell to the ground, their consciousness slipping away.
But just as Eric and Andrew thought they had the situation under control, Nicholas, brandishing a gun of his own. His eyes burned with fury as he took aim, ready to retaliate against Eric and Andrew for thwarting their plans.
"You fools think you can just walk away from this?" Nicholas spat, his voice dripping with malice.
Eric and Andrew exchanged a glance, steeling themselves for what was to come.
Nicholas scoffed, his finger twitching on the trigger. "You think you can talk your way out of this? You've made a grave mistake crossing me."
Before Amdrew could react, a shot rang out, echoing against the brick walls. Pain seared through Andrew's left leg, causing him to stumble and drop his gun. He gritted his teeth, fighting through the agony.
Nicholas seized the opportunity and made a dash for freedom, but he didn't get far. Eric, emerged from the shadows, his gun trained on Nicholas's head.
"Not so fast, Nicholas," Eric growled, his voice low and menacing. "You're not getting away this time."
Nicholas froze, beads of sweat forming on his forehead as he weighed his options. Trapped between Andrew and Eric, there seemed to be no escape.
"I can make it worth your while. Just let me go. I'll give you the 60% of money I have in this transaction."
Eric's grip on the gun tightened, his expression unreadable in the darkness. "You've caused enough trouble already. It's time to face the consequences."
As Nicholas stared into the cold, unyielding eyes of Eric, he knew there was no bargaining with him. With a sinking feeling in his chest, Nicholas realized that this might be the end of the line for him.
But just as Eric's finger tightened on the trigger, a distant gunshots pierced the night air, growing louder by the second. Both Nicholas and Eric glanced towards the sound, tension thick in the air.
In that moment of distraction, Nicholas seized his chance. With a surge of adrenaline, he lunged forward, tackling Eric to the ground and knocking Eric's gun from his hand.
The force knocked Eric's gun from his grasp, sending it skidding across the pavement. Adrenaline surged through Nicholas, igniting every nerve as he pressed Eric beneath his weight, their gazes locked in a primal clash of determination.
"Give it up, Eric! A fool like you stands no chance against me," Nicholas snarled, his voice reverberating with a potent blend of fury and frustration.
Eric struggled beneath him, his muscles tense with resistance. With a sudden surge of vigor, he twisted free from Nicholas's grasp, only to retaliate with a resounding punch squarely aimed at Nicholas's jaw.
Pain exploded through Eric's head, but he refused to let go. He swung back, his fist connecting with Nicholas cheekbone with a sickening thud.
Nicholas staggered backward, momentarily stunned by the blow. Seizing the opportunity, Eric continued his assault, raining down punches on Nicholas defenseless form.
But before Eric could deliver another blow, a gunshot echoed, causing him to freeze mid-swing. He turned to see Mr. Jaxon, standing at the wall, his gun smoking in his hand.
With a grim expression, Mr. Jaxon approached the scene, his gaze cold and calculating. Without a word, he aimed his gun at Andrew's back and pulled the trigger, ending the threat once and for all.
Eric watched in disbelief as the events unfolded before him. His mind raced, trying to make sense of everything.
With a smooth motion, Mr. Jaxon holstered his weapon, he turned to face Eric, a smirk playing on his lips. "Looks like you could use a hand, Eric but look! I come bearing a gun," he said, his words dripping with biting sarcasm.
Eric's jaw clenched as he struggled to contain his anger. Despite Mr. Jaxon's taunts, Eric remained steadfastly focused on the task at hand, knowing full well that their mission was far from concluded.
As Eric's gaze fell upon Andrew, his eyes widened in shock at the sight of his ally, blood staining his clothes. Anger and worry boiled within him.
Before Eric could react, Mr. Jaxon raised his gun once more, intent on finishing what he started. Yet, driven by a potent blend of adrenaline and fury, Eric managed to evade the impending bullet, narrowly sidestepping the deadly trajectory.
Mr. Jaxon spoke, his voice calm yet commanding. "Leave it, Nicholas. There's no time. Get up there and follow me!"
As Eric watched Nicholas follow Mr. Jaxon into the darkness, a cold realization settled over him. He knew that Andrew's wounds were too severe for him to survive, and the weight of guilt threatened to consume him.
In a desperate attempt to avenge his fallen ally, Eric raised his gun once more, his finger tightening on the trigger. But before he could take aim, Nicholas made a split-second decision.
With a selfless act of bravery, Nicholas stepped in front of Mr. Jaxon, shielding him from Eric's bullet. The sound of gunfire echoed through the alley as the bullet pierced Nicholas's chest, sending him crashing to the ground in a pool of blood.
With his last breath, Nicholas locked eyes with Mr. Jaxon, a faint smile playing on his lips. "Damn, I made a stupid decision." Nicholas whispered, his voice barely audible above the chaos of the night.
As Mr. Jaxon struggled to contain his grief and anger, a sense of foreboding washed over him. With a heavy heart, Mr. Jaxon made the difficult decision to leave Nicholas behind and focus on the mission ahead.
As he turned to leave, a faint sound caught his attention, a distant rumble, growing louder by the second. Instinct kicked in as Mr. Jaxon sensed someone approaching. He ducked into the shadows just in time to avoid being spotted as Commander Monbilt and his backup units.
Commander Monbilt's eyes scanned the scene, taking in the chaos and carnage before him. His gaze fell upon Eric, unconscious on the ground, and a grim expression crossed his face.
"Secure the area," Commander Monbilt ordered his team, his voice commanding and authoritative.
As his team moved into action, securing the perimeter and tending to the wounded, Commander Monbilt approached Eric's prone form. He knelt down beside him, his expression unreadable.
"Eric," Commander Monbilt said, his voice tinged with worry. "You've crossed a line this time. You'll have a lot of explaining to do."
Eric remained unconscious, his fate now in the hands of his allies.
As Commander Monbilt's gaze swept across the alley, her heart sank at the sight of Andrew lying motionless, his body battered and bloodied. With a heavy heart, she approached him, her footsteps echoing in the stillness of the night.
Kneeling beside Andrew, Commander Monbilt gently placed her fingers on his neck, searching for a pulse. But despite her efforts, she felt nothing, no sign of life in the stillness of the night.
A wave of despair washed over her as tears welled up in her eyes, blurring her vision. Andrew had been more than just an undercover agent; he had been a trusted colleague, a friend.
Unable to hold back her grief any longer, Commander Monbilt's tears fell freely, mingling with the blood staining the ground beneath them. In that moment of raw emotion, she mourned the loss of a brave soul who had given everything to uphold the law.
But even as her heart ached with sorrow, Commander Monbilt knew that their work was far from over. With a heavy sigh, she rose to her feet, her resolve hardened.
"We'll make Mr. Jaxon pay for this, Andrew," she whispered, her voice filled with determination. "We'll make them pay."
With one last glance at Andrew's lifeless form, Commander Monbilt turned away, her mind already racing with plans for justice.Download Novelah App
