JADE:
“Run,” I heard Kix howl.
He did not have to say it again. Despite my legs giving way from the bruises of my earlier fall, I crawled towards the door until I reached it.
I had just turned the knob and hobbled away from it when the door flew into the wall as Kix and the other two vampires struggled amongst themselves.
I had to go down and call someone. I don’t think I could last with my broken arms, limping leg, and bloodied palms though.
We were on the third floor. It would be a long way downstairs… I don’t think Kix could keep those two rabid creatures occupied for long.
Rats, I need to think and act fast!
I tried to remember everything about the dorm despite the darkness. There were two stairs that go up and down the dorm at each end of the hall. I was closest to the stairs at the left side, but there was a fire alarm at the further end at the right side.
Thus, even though I was closest to the left side staircase, I hobbled towards the right side staircase as efficiently as I could.
I was hoping to sound the alarm. The police would be able to get here faster if I do, right?
Just then, a hand stretched itself over to grab my hair. I was thrown forcefully backwards, my scalp searing in pain that I yelled loudly.
“What’s wrong, Jade? Weren’t you looking desperately for me? We’ll I’m here now, so why run?”
Something sharp pierced the side of my neck. I could only guess that they were either claws or fangs.
I struggled as hard as I could to get away. If he was going to drink my blood, I wouldn’t give him an easy access. I would rather die bleeding rather than becoming someone’s dinner like this!
Just then, I heard a wild roar, and then something big descending against our tumbled bodies against the floor.
Fur went flying into my open mouth, which I had to spit out to be able to breathe.
“Kix,” I called weakly.
“Go,” he grumbled in his beast form. I didn’t know how I was able to understand him when he wasn’t even human now. Whatever magic was involved in this, I’m glad I have it at the moment.
I scampered to get up by using the wall as my support. I was extra sluggish now after that fall, and I could feel hot liquid trickling down from my neck as I walked.
I could hear the sounds of animal shrieks and grumbles from behind, but I didn’t look back. I must reach the fire alarm first.
I groped into the darkness, holding against the wall as I make my way into the end of the hallway. I prayed fervently that I reach it as soon as I could.
After an eternity, I finally reached the end of the hall. I nervously traced my hand against the wall, trying to feel where the fire alarm lever was, so I can pull it down.
Just then, someone pinned me against the wall. My breathing quickened as my lungs were pushed hard into that solid slab of cement and concrete.
“Where do you think you’re going? We haven’t finished what we started yet,” he screamed against my ears.
I felt thousands of sharp things pierce my shoulders. I screamed in pain.
“Scream some more, Jade. This will be the last thing you’ll ever do!”
“Hah… Over. My. Dead. Body,” I uttered as my right hand finally grazed at the protruded part of the lever which must be part of the fire alarm. I pulled it down hard, creating an uproar due to the amount of noise in the whole building.
Despite the noise, the vampire behind me continued to pin me against the wall. I struggled against him, but I was still helplessly trapped.
My eyes were blurring out… Was this it? Was I going to die now?...
Just before my eyesight had completely dimmed, I heard Kix’s grumbling once more, and I felt the weight from my back disappear.
I fell down into the floor. I had no strength left, but I knew I must still try to get out of here. I crawled towards the stairs.
I only took several steps before I could no longer take another one. I was feeling absolutely dizzy.
I held tightly into the metal railings, trying to go down the first floor as I sat on the steps and take a small step one at a time.
Just then, I heard the blood-curling scream of Gary once again from the back.
“You pest, quit running!”
I held as tightly as I could into the railing. If he pierces me with his claws or fangs again, and I bleed, it will surely be the end of me!
Before that blasted man could reach me however, I heard Kix howled.
There were violent screeches once more from the back. I turned my head sidewards just in time to see Kix close into Gary’s neck with his paw in his half beast appearance.
I did not have to think twice. I pushed Gary’s body on the side closest to me, sending him into the edge of railings, tumbling dangerously downwards in the middle of the staircase.
Unfortunately, Kix, whose hands were still wounded against Gary, was also thrown down with him.
I held into Kix’s fur, attempting to hoist him up. Thankfully, I was able to grab him by the hind leg.
Unfortunately for the two of us, Kix was far too heavy. I cried as my limbs were stretched and torn. I tried with all my might to cling to Kix’s body, which dangled in mid air against the railing.
“Jade, let me go,” he whined.
“N-No,” I said, trying my best to pull him up despite the trembling of my arms.
“Please! You’ll fall down too!”
“No,” I said again. My stomach had pressed itself into the railing dangerously. One missed breathing, and we’ll both be sent downward towards our deaths.
“I love you, Jade… Let me go…”
Before I could air my protest once more, the steel railing gave way, and I found myself hurled into the air downwards with Kix.
This was it. This was our end…
I stretched my hands and wrapped them across Kix’s silken fur. I hugged Riley, and he hugged me by the head one last time before we collided with the concrete floor several feet below us.
