KIX: The hospital gowns they found in my room all had Jade’s DNA on them. The police found several more CCTV recordings of me sneaking out into the night and coming back with blood on my body. The saddest part of it all was that I had no memory of it. Not a single memory within that three month period had remained in my head… I was charged by the police for the disappearance of Jade’s body. My pack hired the best lawyers and doctors to help me out, but the glaring pieces of evidence were far too strong. In the end, they pleaded insanity to help me out. Insanity… At first I couldn’t believe that it was remotely possible… For the trial, I was referred to many well-known psychiatrists. The pack hired them for show, but they all ended up telling me the same thing – I had developed an unhealthy obsession for Jade resulting to something positively gruesome… They found out that I used to suffer from sleepwalking when I was young and concluded that it probably relapsed when I was subjected to intense stress given Jade’s rejection. They said that maybe it was the reason I kidnapped Jade and kept her somewhere… I tried to remember everything on those days that the CCTV showed I had sleepwalked out of the hospital, but my mind drew a blank. I tried hypnosis and regression therapies and even more aggressive methods of recall, but they were all fruitless… I was insane, they said, and I had probably killed the one person I had loved the most. Eventually, I was found guilty. Despite the absence of a body, I was convicted of murder and kidnapping. More than getting sentenced as a killer, the idea that I had made Jade suffer weighed so much more in my heart than all else combined. Did I really kill my Jade?... Did I take her somewhere and kept her there? Was she still in that place, bleeding to death quietly because I had been kept by the police and had been jailed all these time?... It was killing me to know that she was somewhere out there. They hadn’t found her body, so she must still be alive, right?... In my dreams, she was always calling to me, asking me to help her. I kept on coming back to that nightmare where she was trapped inside a mirror, but I couldn’t get to her. I couldn’t help her no matter what I did… Today was the same. I tried to end my life by stabbing myself with a piece of broken glass, but it was useless. The people in jail found me out in time and rescued me. They were able to bring me back to life… I laughed hysterically by myself as I lied down in the prison’s hospital bed. Why do they bother bringing me back to life when I was a madman who didn’t deserve to live? In a few weeks time, I would probably be dead anyway. My death sentence was scheduled to take place anytime soon come next week… Knowing that I killed my mate was the worst thing in this damned reality I live in. I don’t deserve to be alive while Jade’s body was rotting somewhere I couldn’t even remember. After that fifth attempted suicide, they lock me up again in the maximum security prison. When some time has passed, an officer opened the small window of my solitary cell. “You have a visitor.” I was dragged away from my cell, and for the first time, I saw the sunlight again. Memories of my Jade immediately flashed back to me. How can I still enjoy something like this when I was the cause of why my first love was in the depths of hell?... The guards took me immediately to the visitor’s meeting place. While being escorted there, my mind raced as to whom my visitor could possibly be… My parents were dead. My beta, Edril, had never recovered from his coma after the attack by the Rubrum Amaryllis Pack. Neil succeeded him as the new beta, and my father’s old assistant, Nathaniel Reyes, was eventually hailed as the Luna Alba’s new alpha. I was a fallen alpha – a disgrace to my pack. They would never visit me even if I only had one week before my scheduled death penalty. There was only one person who came into my mind who would have wanted to meet me before that day came… As soon as I entered the meeting room, I smiled as I proved my hunch was right. Liam Cruz was sitting across the glass-covered partition. He was dressed in an all-black suit, looking quite well. The last time I caught a glimpse of him was during the reading of my verdict. He had showed up at every hearing since day one, but he never said a word nor tried to approach me. Sitting from across me now, he looked like he was worth a million bucks. I heard that he quit nursing school, shifted to law and has now become an employee under Brooklyn and Burke… Brooklyn and Burke… Such a small world, really… I sat from across him from the glass that separated me from the real world. I picked up the telephone receiver from my side. He picked up the receiver from his end as well. “Long time no see, Mr. President,” I said. He said nothing else, but he nodded towards me in a matter-of-fact way. I can feel him observing me, perhaps comparing me to the Kix in his memory. “How have you been,” he finally asked after some time. “Terrible. And you?” “Equally terrible.” “What do you want,” I asked cutting to the chase. Neither of us were friends, and after all that had transpired, I don’t think we could ever be friends, or at least I think could never be friends with someone who had probably killed the woman I loved… “I passed the bar exam just last year,” he said. “Impressive. Congratulations, Mr. President.” This man was really outstanding. Only a prodigy would have passed the bar and became a lawyer in three years’ time. “What does that have to do with me though,” I asked him back. “I was thinking of helping you re-open the case… Your death penalty is scheduled a few weeks from now, but I could still buy you some time if you need it,” he said. “Thanks but no thanks,” I smirked. “I’m dying to know why you’d want to help me, of all people... Don’t you want to see me die instead?” “No, because I know you didn’t kill Jade…”
