Chapter 22 Tough luck

Hara closed the door to her room with a heavy sigh, the weight of the revelations and emotions settling around her like a thick fog. She leaned against the closed door, her back pressing against the cool surface as she slowly slid down to the floor. She went back home after all that. The familiar surroundings of her room offered a sense of comfort, a safe haven where she could process the overwhelming tide of thoughts that had flooded her mind.
She wrapped her arms around her knees, hugging them close to her chest, as if seeking a physical anchor in the midst of the mental chaos. Her mind felt like a jumble of puzzle pieces, each one representing a fragment of her past and her present, waiting to be fitted together into a coherent picture.
Her fingers tangled in her hair as she grabbed her head, as if the physical pressure could somehow help her sort through the emotional turmoil. Her mind was a whirlwind of questions, doubts, and uncertainties. What did this newfound family revelation mean for her relationship with Yuto? How would this affect her dynamic with her father and the people she cared about?
As she closed her eyes, Hara tried to piece together the puzzle. Yuto, her partner, was connected to her past in ways she hadn't anticipated. The ‘Hara’s’ brother she had never known about had become a part of her reality. And her stepmother—someone who had once been a distant figure—was now intricately linked to her own family history.
Hara's hand trembled slightly as she reached up to fix her hair, her fingers threading through the strands in a mechanical motion. The heaviness of the situation still clung to her thoughts, causing her movements to be slightly unsteady. With a deep, calming breath, she exhaled slowly, as if releasing some of the tension that had built up within her. Her sigh echoed in the room, a sound that carried the weight of the emotions she was grappling with. The dim lighting of her room added a sense of intimacy, creating a cocoon-like atmosphere that seemed to embrace her as she was still trying to process everything that had happened.
Despite the weight of her thoughts, the slivers of sunlight filtering through the curtains provided a warm and gentle glow. The soft illumination painted the room in shades of gold, casting intricate patterns on the walls and floor. It was a reminder that even in the midst of complexity and confusion, there was a sense of comfort to be found, a safe space where she could unravel her thoughts.
Her hand slowly dropped to her lap as she pushed herself up from the floor, her movements deliberate and measured. Standing once again, Hara's gaze shifted to her phone, the time displayed on the screen reminding her that there was still a space of time before Yuto would return home. The thought of his impending arrival offered a glimmer of comfort amidst the tumult of emotions.
With a determined exhale, Hara moved with purpose, her steps carrying her towards the jacket and belongings she had set aside earlier. She picked up her jacket and slung it over her arm, along with her belongings. The action felt almost mechanical, a way to ground herself in the present moment. As she stood by the doorway, a renewed resolve took hold. The outside world beckoned, offering a reprieve from the confines of her thoughts and the weight of the recent revelations. With a final glance around her room, Hara stepped outside, the cool air greeting her skin as a refreshing contrast to the emotional turmoil she had been experiencing.
The mansion's surroundings embraced her, the familiarity of the landscape providing a sense of continuity despite the changes within her heart. She inhaled deeply, the scent of nature mingling with the scent of the earth. The sound of leaves rustling in the gentle breeze offered a soothing melody that played in harmony with her racing thoughts.Hara walked aimlessly, her steps carrying her along well-trodden paths and hidden corners of the mansion's estate. As time passed, the knot of tension in her chest began to ease. The open space and the fresh air seemed to untangle the web of emotions that had enveloped her, offering a sense of clarity and perspective. She took slow, deliberate breaths, allowing the cool air to fill her lungs and rejuvenate her spirit.
Hara's footsteps echoed along the sidewalks as she walked, each step a rhythmic beat that seemed to match the cadence of her thoughts. The world around her continued its usual rhythm, people going about their day, cars passing by, and the city's hum filling the air. Despite the bustling surroundings, Hara felt a sense of detachment, as if she had entered a pocket of solitude within the chaos.
With a gentle sigh, she lifted the carton of milk she had bought earlier to her lips, taking a slow sip. The cool liquid was a soothing balm, momentarily distracting her from the maelstrom of emotions that had churned within her. The simple act of drinking became a form of mindfulness, grounding her in the present moment. As she walked, Hara found herself gravitating towards a nearby park. The greenery and open space offered a respite from the urban surroundings, a natural sanctuary that allowed her to breathe a little easier. She settled onto a bench beneath the shade of a tree, her gaze resting on the gentle sway of leaves in the breeze.
With the carton of milk set aside, Hara brought her hands to her lap, her fingers intertwining as she continued to reflect. The world around her seemed to quieten, the park becoming a haven of tranquillity where she could gather her thoughts.
As she sipped from the carton once more, she marvelled at the simplicity of the act—a moment of quiet reflection amid the chaos of life. The milk was a reminder of the small comforts that could be found even in the midst of uncertainty. She closed her eyes briefly, allowing herself to be enveloped by the soothing ambiance of the park.
Time seemed to slow down, the minutes stretching as Hara lingered on the bench. The weight of the recent revelations was still present, but there was a newfound sense of acceptance that accompanied it. The complexities of her family history and the connections she had discovered were parts of a larger tapestry, woven with both joy and pain. With a steadying breath, Hara opened her eyes and looked out at the park. The world around her was alive with movement—the rustling of leaves, the laughter of children, the distant sounds of conversations.
As the sun dipped lower in the sky, casting a warm glow over the park, Hara felt a sense of peace settling within her. With a final sip from the carton of milk, Hara set it aside and stood up from the bench. The world was still moving, and she was ready to move forward with it. As she walked away from the park, her steps were lighter, her heart more resolute.

As Hara gradually found a sense of peace amidst the complex situation, an unease began to stir within her. Time seemed to pass slowly, yet a growing sense of restlessness gnawed at her. It was as if an invisible weight was pressing down on her, as if someone's gaze was fixed upon her, watching her every move.
Suddenly, her thoughts were interrupted by a collision. Hara's attention snapped to the present as she realised she had accidentally bumped into an elderly person. Startled, she quickly reached out to assist the woman, her apologies tumbling from her lips.
"Oh my, I apologise," Hara said, her voice carrying a mix of concern and regret as she helped the elderly woman steady herself.
"No worries, dear," the elderly woman reassured her with a warm smile, her eyes twinkling with kindness. Despite the unexpected encounter, her demeanour remained gentle and understanding. Hara's unease seemed to momentarily dissipate in the presence of the elderly woman's kindness.
Hara continued her walk, her steps echoing her thoughts as she mulled over the encounter with the elderly woman. The sense of unease that had lingered earlier seemed to have dissipated somewhat, replaced by a cautious optimism. As her house drew closer, she inadvertently bumped into another person, breaking her reverie.
"I'm so sorry," Hara quickly apologised, offering an apologetic smile to the person she had bumped into. However, unlike the previous encounter, this person remained silent. Hara's brows furrowed, a bit perplexed by the lack of response. She bowed in apology once again, hoping to defuse any potential awkwardness. The person before her, clad in a hoodie that obscured their face, seemed to carry an air of mystery. Hara's gaze lingered on the hooded figure, her curiosity piqued. Then, in a sudden and unexpected movement, the person looked up, revealing their face. Recognition struck like a bolt of lightning, and Hara's smile faded.
Her eyes widened in disbelief as she stared at the girl before her. It was the same girl with whom she had gotten into trouble in the past—an encounter that had exposed a dangerous connection to the viper cartel. Hara's heart raced, her shock mingling with a rush of memories and emotions.
"You—" Hara's voice trembled with a mixture of shock and disbelief, her words trailing off as her mind grappled with the situation unfolding before her.
A sinister smile spread across the girl's face as she responded, her words dripping with an unsettling familiarity. "Long time no see."
Hara's heart raced at the encounter, her mind a flurry of conflicting emotions. She didn't want to engage further with someone who had once brought danger into her life. With a mix of apprehension and urgency, she swiftly moved past the girl, her pace quickening as she put distance between them.
The girl's enigmatic smile lingered in Hara's mind, an unsettling image that intensified the unease she felt. As she walked away, Hara's thoughts swirled with questions and uncertainties. What had brought the girl back into her life? Was this encounter a coincidence or something more?
Hara's footsteps echoed along the park's pathways, her thoughts still swirling after the unexpected encounter. The unsettling feeling that she was being watched lingered, casting a shadow over her surroundings. She glanced around, her senses on high alert as she tried to shake off the unease.
The sun had dipped below the horizon, casting the park in a hazy twilight. The gentle rustling of leaves in the breeze seemed to take on a slightly eerie tone, amplifying Hara's sense of vulnerability. She quickened her pace, her heart beating a little faster with each step.
As she walked, her phone buzzed with a message from Yuto, asking if she was on her way back. The familiar ping brought a small smile to her lips, a reassuring reminder of the connection she had with him. She replied that she was almost home, hoping that her words would calm the growing disquiet within her.
However, just as Hara was about to exit the park and head towards her house, she heard a rustling behind her. She turned, her gaze narrowing as she tried to identify the source of the sound. Her heart raced, and a shiver ran down her spine as her unease intensified.
"Is someone there?" she called out, her voice echoing through the dimly lit park.
There was no response, but the sense of being watched grew stronger. Hara's instincts screamed at her to leave, to find safety, but a stubborn determination kept her rooted in place. She took a cautious step forward, her eyes scanning the shadows.
Suddenly, a figure emerged from the darkness, the hood of their jacket pulled low to obscure their features. Fear gripped Hara's chest as her eyes met the cold, calculating gaze of the person before her. The same person who had confronted her before, the one who was connected to the viper cartel.
Her heart pounded in her ears as a mixture of panic and anger surged within her. "What do you want?" Hara's voice quivered, a blend of defiance and vulnerability.
The hooded figure's lips curved into a chilling smile, their voice dripping with malice. "You'll found out soon, Hara."
Hara's mind raced, her thoughts a whirlwind of fear and confusion. She took a step back, her instincts urging her to flee. But before she could react, two more figures emerged from the shadows, blocking her escape routes. Her heart sank as she realised she was trapped.
Panic surged through her veins as the figures closed in, their intentions clear. Hara's mind raced for a solution, her breaths coming in short gasps as she searched for a way out. Her phone slipped from her trembling fingers, falling to the ground with a soft thud.
Desperation took over as she turned and sprinted in the opposite direction, her heart pounding in her chest. The sound of footsteps echoed behind her, closing the distance with frightening speed. Her surroundings became a blur as she pushed herself to run faster, to escape the impending danger.
But as she reached the edge of the park, a strong arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her to a stop. Hara's scream was swallowed by the darkness as a cloth was pressed over her mouth, a sickly sweet smell filling her senses. Her struggles grew weaker, her vision fading as the world spun around her.
As consciousness slipped away, the last thing Hara saw was the sinister smile of the person who had orchestrated her abduction.
