Scarlett pushed open the door and stepped out into the early morning mist. The dense fog hung in the air, creating an eerie atmosphere. The chill seeped into her bones, and the dampness clung to her skin. These conditions were less than ideal for a fight, as the moisture in the air muffled sounds, making it difficult to detect any potential threats sneaking up on her. But Scarlett was a smart girl with a deep connection to the natural world. Her father's teachings had ingrained in her the importance of using not only her physical strength and weapons but also her mind and senses in combat. As she walked through the mist, she focused on feeling the vibrations beneath her feet, a skill her father had taught her. She honed her awareness, utilizing all of her senses to stay alert and prepared for any potential danger that might lurk nearby. When she felt the rushing sensation from behind, she swiftly reacted and spun to her right and used the edge of her blade to defend herself. However, her opponent was just as quick, and he easily deflected her charge. His laughter filled the air and the space between them with its sound. When she turned around to face him, he stood firmly with his hand on his hip and the flat of his blade on his shoulder. "What's so funny, eh?" "I was just thinking that I could live to be a thousand years old and I'd never see anything as funny as a girl dressed as a boy," he said. "I know we've been fighting for a while, but I'm not used to seeing it yet." "Do you know what's funnier than a girl in a boy's outfit?" she inquired. "What is it? "A grown man beat with a blade by a girl dressed as a boy." And with that, Scarlett leapt forward and started throwing thrusts, slices, parries, and blocks at her opponent. The clash of steel echoed across the meadow, making a battle symphony. As skilled as she was, Scarlett found joy in sparring with the young werewolf named Henry. He possessed impressive swordsmanship and proved to be a formidable opponent. Beyond his skill, he had shown kindness to Scarlett since her arrival, treating her like family and earning her trust. They fought back and forth for an hour, but neither of them could get the upper hand. Scarlett was glad when Finley finally told them to stop. They fell to their knees, panting and gulping air as they tried to catch their breath. "That was a good fight," he said between breaths. "You're a dangerous young woman with a blade." Even if you’re dressed like a boy." "If you keep talking like that," she huffed, "I'll make you a girl with the edge of my blade." Henry's laughing made him cough and gasp and roll around on the ground. Scarlett leaned back on her haunches and closed her eyes. She let the cool, misty air cool her hot skin. He sat down next to her and gave her a water skin. She nodded her thanks and took a big gulp. The cool water calmed her insides just like the mist had calmed her skin. "You fight like a demon, girl. I think you'd beat most men in a fight." "Except you," she said with a smile, "I haven't beaten you yet." Henry gave a shrug and replied, "Well, it's hard to deny the truth. I am quite skilled with a steel blade." She gave an eye roll. "And so humble, too," she laughed. "But it was a good fight. I like training with you because you're more skilled than I am. I'm learning from you. When I can match your skill, I'll know I'm ready." He laughed, a gleam of amusement in his eyes. "Oh, girl, flattery will get you everywhere. But don't underestimate yourself. You are smart, determined, and have a fire in you that can't be put out. If you keep pushing yourself, one day you'll be better than me. I have no doubts about that." Henry took a big drink, never taking his eyes off of her until he lowered the skin on his face and pursed his lips. He examined Scarlett carefully, as if he was trying to figure out what was going on beneath the surface. The mystery around her was reflected in the way his eyes danced with interest. He didn't know that Scarlett had changed her name and lied about who she was so she could fit in with this new life. She had changed so much that no one, not even Henry, knew who she really was. She wondered if, if he knew the truth, he would see her for who she really was.
