I decided to do a research and investigation on why most kids become street urchins. I came across several. Firstly, street children are poor or homeless children who live on the streets of a city, town, or village. Homeless youth are often called street kids, or urchins.
Some street children, notably in more developed nations, are part of a subcategory called thrown-away children, consisting of children who have been forced to leave home. Thrown-away children are more likely to come from single-parent homes. Street children are often subject to abuse, neglect, exploitation, or, in extreme cases, murder by "clean-up squads" that have been hired by local businesses or police (as taken from Wikipedia).
Other causes could be due to displacement, separation, domestic, economic, or social disruption. This includes, but is not limited to: poverty; breakdown of homes and/or families; political unrest; acculturation; sexual, physical or emotional abuse; domestic violence; being lured away by pimps, internet predators, or begging syndicates; mental health problems; substance abuse; and sexual orientation or gender identity issues.
Children are gifts from God so they should be well taken care of. So, there are measures that should be taken considerably for these kids. They deserve a normal life, like other kids do have.
All Characters in this book are fictional and are not related to any real humans. This book depict the life of children around us that probably grew up in the streets. Life separates their dreams as fate intertwines.
PROLOGUE
Jemaima was looking for her twin sister, Joan. The twins were separated from their mother. Life had been tough on them as they tried to fend for their daily bread. As the years rolled on, it lost each other.
Four years ago, while they were traveling to meet their new father whom their mother was getting married to in the city. Robbers attacked their bus and the rest was history.
Their mother who had instinctively known they were not only robbers but kidnappers, his her children and told them to escape through the back door.
They were only eleven years old then. One last look at their mother had been the most painful experience for both of them.
Reluntantly, they left their mother and escaped. Jemaima who was the oldest never let her sisy out of her sight though life hadn't been fair on them both.
They believed that one day they would get to find their mother.
One fateful morning being a Saturday, Jemaima woke up from where she and her twin had spent the night outside a locked kiosk. Joan wasn't there, surely, she went to beg for some food from the street.
Jemaima waited but there was no sign of her sister. She had a bad feeling. Joan was the shy and fearful one, she was too fearful that she had both thought they might die from cold while Jemaima was the opposite.
Bold, courageous and more daring like a boy. Dusk came, still there was no sign of Joan. Jemaima grew tired and weary after she had searched the environs for her sister.
Jemaima knew she was hungry yet she must find her sister.
"Where is Joan? Where in the world is she?" Jemaima asked herself.
She knew she couldn't stay around that neighborhood for far too long for fear of being taken in by some officials who pick street urchins. She moved towards the bridge where she and her twin usually pass the nights with some homeless people. She walked up to a man named Sir Paul and politely asked him for some food.
"Please sir, can you give me some food?" She asked him.
The old man gave her one sad look as he understood what she was going through. He took from the little he had and gave her a portion from his.
That night, she bid him farewell. Before she left, the man advised her to change her clothes to that of a boy's. It would be tough on a girl to walk the streets at night.
