She and Uka had cuddled him like a baby and indulging him to every affair of the family, which he does not show any interest in. At each of those times, he was hard and unapproachable, that any member of the family except Mosi would have considered it most impolite to chatter with him. Now he had changed, completely a new person, with the force of love in him. He had achieved his dreams.
* Despite Mr. Ribadau’s assassination, the election went well anyway by those who it favored, but for others it was no good story. The election was conducted under a cloud of cheating. It was the most bloody, rigged and rejected ever that ruined the history of politics in that African nation. The drama that followed it was short, nasty and brutish, from the highest tier of the government to the lowest, the story remained the same. The electorate went on rampage in the capitals and city centers running and crying for justice to be installed. It was a justified protest. Everything was carried out as planned and in their very faces. They stood in silence, watching the stealing, marking the exodus of true democrats and republicans whom they voted for. It was an action; they could not do anything to turn. They knew they were powerless, unless a promise from judiciary and election tribunals were strong. Their protest may earn them more trouble and so they were completely powerless to protest this maneuver. Uka who was made the scrutineer of the electoral body was entirely a big disappointment. It had become a world conversation that a republic with more than forty years of independence could not be responsible enough to conduct a free and fair election. It was global news that was read and sang along newspaper lines, cables and internet. Once again, the work of Kandala was getting down in the eyes of the world. General speaking, as a rule for democracy, election is good news. It brought new faces into the system and give people and the media eyes to see and mouth to speak up for error. It brought changes from the old other and translates ideas of the new order. It marked a line for what lies ahead and what had been left behind. It was to many a long awaited thing to come and be cherished. But for this republic that has had their share of political instability, it was totally a different news. The election standard was abysmally low; too low to be given an assessment. It could not be rated even by being too careful. It tended to signal failed expectation, failed dreams and better future for the republic. The rigging and irregularities in the election were alleged to be more brazen and more shameful. Law and order broke down completely leading to an almost complete state of anarchy. Arson and indiscriminate killings were committed by a private army of thugs of political parties, for which many lost their lives. Law abiding citizens lived in constant fear of their lives and properties. Politics in this hugely populated African country was a very big risk, which any new politicians need to take with caution. It was a do or die affair. The way politics were played were too ordinary to the common understanding of the common man. Living by that rule of conduct was becoming a constant remembrance of blood that flowed in the past which always engender bad feelings between the many races in different regions. It does not really matter to these ones whether they would be the choice of the people. They only need power and those under could die for groaning under the pangs of bad leadership. It does not really matter. For days, months and even years that followed, it was hard for the nation at large to absorb the shock, because their rights were brazenly stolen with the collision of those charged with ensuring their credibility. They witnessed the deficiency – ballot boxes stuffed in plain view, gangs of ruling party and their police stood tough interfering with vote collation, voters chased away with gun from their polling units by gangs armed with cudgels and sophisticated weapons, legion of underage children smuggled in to cast votes and ballots. Houses, cars, kiosk were set ablaze and burnt beyond recognition. The news and pictures that greeted the next day was carcasses of burnt innocent citizens, houses and vehicles. The election was thus summarized as everything bad by government media houses. That was far from truth. It was a terrible setback for the hopes of democratic reform and a stark reminder of the disastrous state of governance. Sleep was murdered nationwide. The failure of other parties from the ruling party was a non-to measure massacre. The entire nation was stunned and dumbfounded. International observers were flustered the game had been nearly perfected.
