…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… Frightday Father got sick. Then he dies. Mother got sick too. Then she dies too. The man said I don’t have time to get sad because lots of kids would come here soon. They will play with me. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… “I wonder what kind of sickness they had,” mumbled Kaien to himself while reading the diary. “Something can’t be cured? What is it?” He tried to recall all the diseases he had encountered and learned all this time, but he could not come out with any specific disease. Especially when he did not know the symptoms or any clue. Perhaps the diary could give him a clue. He continued reading the diary with hope that he could find out what the disease that the author or the parents had. But, what he found out was not what he was looking for. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… Shatterday Lots of kids come today. We play lots of games all day. Everyday. Then they want to go home. But they can’t. Why want to go home when we could play everything, anything here? …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… Kaien flipped to the next page. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… Moanday I can’t leave the house. No one can. Many kids keep coming. I give them everything, anything. But it’s not enough. They are gone. They are all the same. But today, four kids came to play. They are different. I like them. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… “Hurmmm. . .” Kaien sighed, aware he would never know the answer to that question. ‘The kid, whoever wrote the diary, just wanted to play,’ he thought and put back the diary on the table. He started to get bored and at the same time wondering why he cared so much about the people in the diary. It was not like he could save them since they were most likely already dead. Who knew how old the diary and person in the diary was. Kaien was thinking, maybe he could just ask Dominique about the diary. But, he did not know if everything in the diary took place in this mansion or somewhere else. There was nothing about the diary that said anything about this mansion or any specific place. It could be anywhere, everywhere around the world. It was just a hunch and he was not sure that Dominique would tell him anything. Dominique was hiding too many things. When he thought that he had stepped into Dominique’s world, he would be pushed out again. Over and over again. He was wondering why Dominique could be so secretive about everything. Did Dominique try to protect his past or this mansion? Or someone? “Someone?” asked Kaien to himself. That was right. Dominique maybe the only owner and the only one who lived and lingered in the mansion. But, before Dominique, there was someone else that everyone met before going into the mansion. Someone that everyone had to pass first. Someone at everyone met at the gate – Sean. Kaien had totally forgotten about Sean. It had been a few days since the last time he saw Sean. To be honest, he only saw Sean when he first arrived here on the first day. After that, no more. He had no idea where Sean lived or where he stayed or if he was at the gate every day. Sean did not join and ate together with everyone else. Deep down in his heart, Kaien doubted that Sean would tell him anything, but, if he did not try, he would not have known. He decided that he would go talk to Sean now. He jumped to his feet, peeked outside his room to make sure no one was around and quickly went to the main door. Before he could open the door, he was stopped by someone. “Where are you going, Kaien?”
“Dom,” said Kaien and slowly turned around to face Dominique. “I just want to go to see Sean. For a while. Is that ok?” Dominique did not answer. With a little hint of worry in his voice, he said, “Be careful and be back fast. It’s about time for lunch.” “Sure. Thank you.” Kaien quickly went outside and closed the door. He leant against the door and let out a heavy sigh. He wondered how long since the last time he stepped outside? It was only a few days and he already felt like it had been forever. Kaien looked at his car, still at the same spot where he left it on the first day. He tried to start the engine, but his effort was in vain. He was expecting it would turn out like this. After all, he had left the car there untouched since he arrived. Now he had no choice, but to walk to the gate. He let out a heavy sigh again as he slowly walked to the gate. The front yard was bigger than he thought when he had to walk. He looked around where everything and nothing was there. He looked at the dead pine tree, each of them, one by one. The more he looked, the more he thought that the pine tree seemed like it was in ‘pain’. They were dead and still in pain. As though they were unable to leave this world, even though they were already dead. His thought scared him a bit and he tried to look forward, straight to the gate. He tried to think about other things and then he wondered if it felt this ‘deadly’ when he first arrived here. It was hard to breathe. Every breath he took, it felt as though inhaling an air full of needles and caused him pain in his lung. People can be poisoned by fumes they inhale. Scared of what his mind could play with him, he quickly shook his head. Maybe it was because of all the dead trees. Maybe it was because the walk and the gate were so far away, he tried to be positive. He was getting closer to the gate and he could see someone was leaning his back against the gate. It was Sean, Kaien was sure about it. There were still lots of chains on the gate like the first time he arrived. He used to feel safe when he first saw the chained gate, but now he was not sure anymore. It was like the purpose of the chains was to prevent what from inside getting outside, instead of preventing what outside getting inside.
