Epilogue
Luna rolled on her bed as she reached for the phone on the bedside drawer. She yawned lazily as she turned on the phone to check the time. it was 3:35 pm.
“Slow day.” she thought as she tapped on her notifications to see if she had any new messages or missed calls. “Four new messages.” Becoming excited, she tapped on it quickly, her heart racing with anticipation.
Luna frowned instantly when she realized that not a single one was from him. “These annoying service providers.” she hissed angrily tossing the phone away from her and rolling on her back. Pulling her pillow, she stared at the ceiling, her face showing frustration and disappointment.
“What is up with him?” she whispered to herself “why won’t he call?”
It had been three days since they last spoke and since then, he had neither called texted nor picked her calls. She had texted but he hadn’t replied.
“This is not like him” she thought, trying to qual the fear in her heart. She had thought of calling Farhan’s mum but she felt to shy to do that.
“What if something happened to him?” she thought sitting up straight. As soon as the thought went through her mind, she once and again reached for her phone and dialed his number, praying silently as she did.
“The number you are trying to call is currently switched off please…” she heard the automated voice of the call operator respond. Frustrated, she ended the call.
Scrolling to her message box, she typed…
“Hey love, what’s going on? I can’t reach you, give me a call as soon as you get this please. And it better be soon, I am seriously going crazy here.
Love you (hearts emoji).
She hit the send button and smiled. It felt nice, having someone to call her love and not just anyone, but him, her first friend, her first crush, turned love and to be her husband. The thought sent spirals of joy through her entire being.
Some ladies may consider the text she just sent as “too forward” that she was being too easy and all that, but Luna didn’t care, not when it was Farhan. He would never think of her as such, no, not her Farhan. She smiled as she fell back to the bed pulling the pillow to her chest.
They were beyond such pretense, she and Farhan. She loved him and knew with all her being that he loved her too.
And now, “Just 27 days to go.” She whispered and smiled. At that moment, her phone beeped indicating that a new message had just entered. She reached for it quickly hoping it was from him.
Luna almost flung the phone at the wall when she realized it was yet another network provider message.
“Uuurh!” She exclaimed with disgust, “bother somebody else please, God! I hope somebody sues them.”
Getting upset, she flung the phone aside and stepped down from her bed. Making her way for her bathroom. “He had better have a very good excuse” she murmured as she performed her ablution.
***
It was almost five O’clock when Luna made her way downstairs, as she passed her mother’s room, she peeked in to see if mummy in. She wasn’t in, still Luna found as smile form on her lips as her eyes fell on the things in the room. Her wedding things. Mummy had proudly insisted that they be kept in her room. And she guarded these things with vigor. Not even Luna had a free access to them.
“But they are mine Mummy.” She had protested, “can’t I even touch my own things anymore?”
When they are in your own house, in your own room, then you can call them yours. Until the day of your wedding when I hand over to you, they are still under my custody. So, hands off!” mum had replied, trying to smile.
“Yes Ma’am!” Luna had saluted coming to stan at attention. “CSO Ma!” She saluted again.
Her mother couldn’t help it, she started to laugh now. “This child and your mouth, I hope it doesn’t get you into trouble one day.” As she said this, she stretched out her hands towards Luna who took it fondly and went to sit on the bed beside her mum.
“Be patient,” Mummy smiled at her. ”it would soon be yours anyways.”
Luna smiled shyly hiding her face, she hugged her mother. “I already miss you mummy” she whispered.
“Don’t you worry dear; I will always be a phone call away.
“Thank you for all this” Luna had whispered, I really appreciate you and Daddy so much.”
“You deserve it and much more dear.” Her mother smiled pulling her closer.
They stayed that way for a while before Mummy pulled away and said. “Let’s go down stairs before those troublesome juniors of your come running in here.”
“Troublesome juniors huh? Luna laughed. “They are your troublesome children before they are my juniors.
“There are somedays when I am tempted to deny them.” Mum laughed as they walked down the stairs.
Luna smiled once more as she remembered all these. She closed the door quietly and continued down stairs. As she got closer to the parlor, she could here her mother’s voice, it sounded tensed and angry.
Luna doubled her steps and hurried down. As she barged into the parlor, she realized was with Farhan’s mum and sister. Becoming self-conscious, Luna quickly rubbed her face and straightened her cloth. She didn’t know why but these days, she had become shy and self-conscious around Mrs. Nazeer. Farhan’s Mum was like a second mum to her but now, she just couldn’t face her without blushing. Nazeer and her Mum had been best friend even before she was born.
“But why is Mummy speaking with that tune?” Luna wondered. Her mother sounded angry, something that rarely ever happened.
Mrs. Nazeer had her head bowed, she looked sad and sorry. Farida, Farhan’s sister and Luna’s best friend was sitting also, she had her face in her hands.
Luna had never heard them quarrel before, not even so much as a hard word. “What could be the problem?” she thought as she approached them.
As soon as they saw Luna, they all stopped and looked at her. Her Mother bit her lips and tried to avoid her gaze.
Mrs. Nazeer looked as if she wanted the ground to swallow her. Luna approached them trying to figure out from their faces what the problem could be
“Good evening Aunty” she whispered cheerfully to Mrs. Nazeer, trying to living up the atmosphere.
Mrs. Nazeer avoided Luna’s gaze and looked down again, she Murmured something Luna couldn’t comprehend.
Luna turned to her Mum and asked, “what is going on mum?” But her mother also avoided her gaze and looked down.
Becoming alarmed, Luna turned to face Farida. What is going on girl?” She asked.
“Its Farhan…, Farida began to say then stopped.
Luna felt her heart clutch as panic overtook her. Trying her best to keep her voice as calm as she could manage, she asked “What about him? What has happened to Farhan?
Farida now avoided her gaze also.
“Did something happen to him?” she continued getting more worried. ” Tell me quickly Rida.”
“Well…,he is fine, it’s just that…well” she couldn’t continue and once again looked away.
“This is driving me crazy; somebody please tell me what is happening.” Luna said raising her voice now.
At that moment, Mrs. Naseer stood and hurried out the door, there were tears in her eyes. “I am really sorry dear.” She had whispered at Luna as she left. She had wanted to say more but didn’t seem to find the right words.
Luna looked puzzled and torn between following Mrs. Nazeer or speaking to her mother first. She decided to speak to her mum first.
Slowly, she walked to her mum and sat very close to her on the chair. All the time her heart beating wildly.
Mummy, what happened? She whispered.
Her mother looked very uncomfortable, she avoided Luna’s as she tried to keep the tears that threatened to spill down her face. She sifted uncomfortably on the chair but still couldn’t speak.
Not getting any answer from her mum, Luna turned to Farida.
“Won’t somebody speak to me?” she whispered almost in tears also.
Farida looked at Luna as bit her lips nervously. “Its Farhan…” she said in a whisper. “they said he…that he…again she couldn’t continue….”
“that he what?!” Luna screamed now unable to bare it any longer.
Farhan’s mum just told me that he got married two days ago.” It was her mum who spoke. She sounded angry and hurt.
Luna was silent for a while as if she didn’t understand what her mum had just said. She looked from her mum to Farida and then suddenly started to laugh.
“Ok, nice one you guys, very funny, well played, you really got me there.” She continued to laugh. “Is this revenge for all my pranks, haha! Well played Mum, Aunty you can come back in now,” she called loudly. She expected Mrs. Nazeer to work back in laughing. For they had to be joking right? They were not making any sense. She stopped when no one else laughed. Almost a minute passed and still neither mum Nor Farida could speak.
Farida started to cry instead.
Rida, Luna called her friend, it’s a joke, right? This is all some silly prank, right?
I am sorry Luna, we couldn’t believe it either, it’s still a shock to us also.
At that moment, Luna began to realize that they were serious, this was no joke. She felt dizzy all of a sudden and almost fell back. Her mother held her quickly and whispered some words that Luna could no longer hear. Luna’s breathe was labored as she tried to sit straight.
Farida was beside her also, holding her hands and crying. She to was speaking but Luna couldn’t hear anything. The whole world seemed to be quiet and only her aching heart felt real.
Luna rubbed her hands over face as if to clear off sleep, then without a word, she stood, staggered a bit and regained her steps. Turning to her mum, she whispered, “I am going to sleep mum, please don’t wake me anytime soon.”
With that she made her way for the stairs. Farida tried to follow but she waved her off dismissingly. “let’s talk tomorrow Rida, I want to sleep now.”
Inside her room, Luna just walked around slowly as if she was sleep walking, no matter how she tried, she just couldn’t process anything at that moment. She felt like crying but the tears would not come, she felt like screaming but the sound stuck at her throat. Walking slowly to her bed, she lay down pulling the pillow to herself. Within a minute, Luna was in a deep slumber.
Chapter One
“Farry!” Wait for me, don’t run so fast, Mummy says I will fall if I run.” The little called as she tried to keep up with the boy who was at full speed ahead of her. She held her teddy bear close to her chest, trying to look ahead of her over its fluffy ears. Once or twice it dropped to the ground and she had to stop and pick it up, before continuing to run after him. “Farry! She called once more, won’t you wait for me?”
Luna, you will make me late again,” he called from ahead of her, stopping to look back, his face showing his frustration. “why did you have to bring that silly teddy bear along? It just slows us down.” He said as he walked back to her.
“Teddy wants to watch also.” she answered frowning at him. Clearly, she was offended that he would even suggest that.
He smiled at the face she made, held out his hand and waited for her to reach him. “You can just tell teddy about the movie instead of bringing him along and making us late instead.” He said she held his hand.
That’s not fair, Teddy likes to watch also” she protested, taking his hand and using her her other hand to clasped her doll to her side.
Girls” he whispered and rolled his eyes.
“I hear that.” She said.
“So what if you did? She said frowning at her, I will miss the start of the movie now because of you.” He complained “You are always bothering me.” As he doubled his steps.
“It was you who promised to bring me,” she smiled mischievously.
I won’t bring you next time.” He said, scowling at her.
“OK, I am sorry Farry, I will work faster, I wont be naughty anymore.” She pleaded.
As she spoke, she doubled her steps. However, she tripped and fell.
Farhan bent down quickly to pick her up, his face clouded with concern. “Luna, are you hurt?” she asked in gentle voice, different from his earlier tone.
There were tears in her eyes as she observed the bruise on her knee.
“Don’t cry.” He pleaded, helping her up. “I won’t walk so fast anymore.”
She held her Teddy closer trying to hold back the tears. “I wont cry.” She declared determinedly.
He smiled at her affectionately as he brushed some dirt off her dress. “Good Girl.” He whispered.
Satisfied that her dress was neat again, Farhan carried her and place her over his neck, so that she sat on his shoulders, her littles legs dangling at his chest. “Better?” he asked as he started to walk again. He directed his steps towards the light some distance away. They could here the sounds of the large TV inside the Cinema now.
“Yes!” she exclaimed excited.
He laughed.
They found a spot amongst the crowed and sat down, she diligently sat her teddy beside her and smiled as he handed a pack of popcorn, he ha bought.
“Farry?”
Hmmn? He said focusing on the TV.
“You are nice.” She said smiling at him affectionately. “When I grow up, I will marry you.”
He stopped briefly to stare at her, she was already stuffing her mouth with popcorn now and watching the TV. He smiled at her fondly and caressed her hair.
“Crazy child.” He whispered.Download Novelah App
