Chapter 41

KENT'S POV
I was painting when I heard a doorbell ring in our house.
Tss. Fortunately, Isabella is back. It's boring here at home because my parents aren't here now. They have a meeting at our company, and Leigh isn't here either because she attended a meeting there in her organization. No one was talking to me so I was sleepy.
I called my maid and opened the gate and resumed my painting.
"Kent..."
I frowned when Jane came to visit me. I really thought Isabella came, but she didn't. And I also don't expect her to come here today to visit me... after a few years of her not even saying hi to me whenever we see each other.
"Jane?" I looked at her from head to toe. She's wearing an all-black dress, and she's still holding a bottle of wine in her hand. The size of her eyebags is also so huge that I feel like she hasn’t had a proper rest yet.
She looks... wasted.
And all I can feel with her in front of me is... concern. I am no longer in pain, and I am not angry with her. My heart no longer aches now that she is in front of me, and it no longer beats so loudly now that she is close to me.
"Kent..." she mentioned my name again before she approached me.
"Jane!" And I almost sneered when she suddenly kissed me, so I didn't mean to push her to the floor.
"You're drunk, Jane. It's better that you go home." I tried to control my emotions because I also studied it in the States. It's because I don't have to let go of my emotions so that my heart won't be affected as much.
She smells of wine. Maybe she was just drunk.
Maybe.
"Kent... don't you love me?" She sobbed between her words. "Why? Why are you doing this to me?"
"Jane..." I couldn't say anything but her name. It feels strange, though. For too long I avoided mentioning her name or knowing anything about her.
Ever since she left me, it seems like she has left our remaining friendship as well.
"I... still... love you, Kent."
I closed my eyes tightly when she said that to me. I had been praying for a long time that Jane would come back to me.
That she would say again that she loves me... because I am ready to go back to her even if she is the reason why my sickness got worse. I can't stand the pain of her leaving me... but I can handle it if she comes back to me.
My request has been granted.
But now, I am no longer happy.
"Jane, I'm sorry," I approached her and lifted her up, "but I don't love you anymore. Selene is the one I love now, and I hope you accept that."
"No!" Jane suddenly cried before she removed my grip on both her shoulders. "You're just blinded by her, Kent! I'm the one you love, aren't you? I... I'm the only one, Kent! Because I'm your first love and she's not..."
I just gasped before I answered her. "I'm sorry, Jane, but Selene is my life now. She's the reason I want to live. She's the woman who makes me happy. She's the only woman I'll love for the rest of my life. Even if we're hindered. by destiny... I will never stop loving her."
"What the hell... Jane?" Isabella said, shocked, as she had just entered my house.
She looked at Jane who was now standing in front of me.
"Jane, what the hell are you doing?! Come on, I'll take you home!" Isabella sat next to Jane, but Jane just stared at her.
By her looks, she doesn’t seem to be the Jane I knew anymore.
She doesn’t seem to be the Jane I once loved.
"Shut up, Isabella," Jane said coldly. "You don't know how much it hurts... so shut up."
She turned to me again and took my hand. "Is it really Selene?" I heard the sadness in the tone of her voice.
I nodded without any hesitation. I want her to accept that, or if she can't do it, I just wanted her to respect my decision and not bother me anymore. I thought she would leave after that, but...
"Finally, my plan has been fulfilled! Isabella, it worked!" said Jane as she jumped up and down and shook Isabella.
"What the heck? Jane? Are you high?" Isabella asked in confusion, and even I was confused because of her reaction. Now, she looks happy. I mean, she looks wasted but... I can't even explain it.
"Of course not!" she immediately refused as she wiped her tears with the tissue in the pocket of her black dress. "Yeah, I smoke and I drink liquor but I don't use drugs!" she even said proudly. "Wait, don't tell me you believed in my acting earlier?"
She furrowed her eyebrows, but shouldn't we be the ones frowning because of what she wass doing? I no longer understood anything at all that was going on.
Acting? Plan?
What the hell are they talking about?
ISABELLA'S POV
"Kent really loves Selene," Jane said madly as she smiled broadly. "I'm ready to give Selene to him in full, especially since I know she won't hurt my best friend anymore."
"You're so fucked up, Jane," I whispered to her. "You're crazy. I thought it was true that you said you were going to take Kent from Selene."
I'm annoyed with her now. She convinced me. She's really good at acting.
"Huh? Why would I do that? I made up a plan for the two of them, why would I ruin it myself?" she answered me while raising an eyebrow. "I just tested how good my acting skills are, and I think it was one-hundred percent because you believed in me as well. Also, if I were to take Kent. I should have done that in the first place."
This one is like a stupid matchmaker. She was so hurt by what happened to the two that she forced them to love each other.
"However, I need to make sure that Selene will be happy, too. I love her as much as I love Kent... and as much as I'm willing to protect the both of them."
She's a fool, too, but I'm more amazed at myself. This woman deceived me. Psh. My friends in the organization will laugh at me when they find out.
"Tsk."
We both looked at Kent as he cleared his throat.
"It's up to you to explain," Jane and I said together.
"It's you," Jane said coldly. "You better explain."
"It's you," I said as I glared at her. "It's your fault why it's all messed up."
"You."
"You."
"Tsk. If only you two could just leave?" Kent said angrily as he crossed his arms over his chest.
"Oh, it's just a joke, Kent," I said and I made a peace sign with him. He even rolled his eyes after that.
"I said we'll explain, eh," Jane said poker-faced.
And that, we told him everything. But mostly, Jane is the one who speaks because she is really the one who planned it all. I mean, she came up with the plan, and even I was deceived by her other plans.
I think it's more manipulative than I do.
I thought Kent would be mad at us, but he just said...
"Thank you," Kent said while smiling from ear to ear.
"Tss. Anything for you, Kent." She shrugged her shoulders. "I love you so much," Jane said laughing but I could see in her eyes that what she said was true. It was obvious that she still really love Kent.
I just don’t know what happened to her and she broke up with Kent.
I just hope that she'll be happy. Aside from Kent and Selene, she deserves it, too.
"She's crazy," Kent said with a poker face.
Nothing changed between the two of them. They still act as best friends... like before.
"JANE," I said to Jane who was in the garden of Kent's house today. "Didn't you say everything was okay? Your plan is successful. Kent already knows our plan to bring Selene and him back together."
"Uh huh..." was her short answer.
"But why are you still sad?" She looked at me because of my question. "To the point that you're still smoking your cigarette until now?"
She immediately looked at her cigarette, and Kent's gaze prolonged on her who had just arrived here in the garden. He fixed what he was painting first before he walked towards us.
"When did you learn to smoke, Jane Sy?"
Jane simply threw her cigarette in the trash. Tss, he's still scared of Kent until now.
"I drink and smoke, and that's my hobby," she said. "I won't cry just because I'm drunk. I know how to control my emotions," she clarified her acting earlier so I just nodded.
The surroundings became quiet. The awkwardness continued, tss.
"Hey, Jane." I touched her. "Would you please answer my question?"
"What's your question again?" she asked me in a low tone.
"My question is, why are you sad even though everything is okay?" I asked and took a piece of cookies that Kent was eating.

He looked at me but I just made a finger heart. He immediately smirked because I did that.
"Because Selene is missing," she casually replied to us before looking away.
"WHAT?!" I shouted.
"What?!" Kent shouted too.
The heck! Why did she need to say that just now?!
