“You have a pretty amazing life here.” Themis said as her eyes take everything around her while holding her babe close to her chest, I wondered what she saw and did not see, my sight and hers were different now. I saw the wonders and the mundane and none shocked me anymore.
“You think.” I snorted as I rose from my throne seat which was slightly smaller than that of my husband, it was very comfy and a guilty pleasure of mine. Whenever I am on it, I don’t feel the insecurity that is crashing around me. “Enough talking, I haven’t seen my godson in a while, hand him over.”
“And look, there she goes threatening me for my own son.” Themis jokes as I wrapped my arms around Themis in a hug. “I have missed you.” Themis confessed.
“I knew it, I knew that you would miss the way I heap insults on you.” I teased with a laugh as I untangled myself and held Themis son.
“Be careful with Elison.” Themis worries as I froze.
“What did you say his name was?” My voice was barely audible.
“Elison, I am sorry that we didn’t ask you but you left immediately after his birth so as to escape the harsh winter and as soon as the winter ended we started our journey here although we made a few stops, we didn’t see the need to disturb you with a missive.” Themis explains as I hugged her with one arm, the closest I could since my other arm was used to support baby Elison.
“Thank you, thank you for choosing to honor my friend memory by naming your son after him.” I said as I pulled back with a laugh although tears were also in my eyes and I was trying my best not to let them fall. “Although hearing, Elison, son of Orel is just plain wrong.”
“Thank you for not being offended and he was my friend too.”
“I know.” I replied.
“I heard we have guests.” Arius enters the room with a hint of smugness as he went straight to the throne like he would like to establish his rule of the newcomers, I rolled her eyes at my husband’s antics but Themis just shook her head. “What?” Arius asked noticing her actions.
“It’s been months Arius, I think you should have gotten your head out of your behind now but you want to continue with what you are doing, fine by me but you will regret in later in future.” Themis tells him as she took her child back from my arms even with my loud protests. Before I could demand why Themis collected Elison from me, Orel flew at the throne where he punched Arius right in the face.
“Orel.” I shouted, hurrying to my husband side before Orel could punch Arius again.
“I should punch you twice but I would not, not because you deserve my pardon but because of your wife, the same wife you cheated on, the same wife who didn’t even get a proper send off from her people and when they tried to fix one, you shut down all advances.”
“I don’t see the reason why we should have gone down or have foreigners in this country.” Arius replied, wiping the blood from his mouth.
“Next one will cost you.” He added.
“You isolated Gwenn from everything she knows.” Orel rages.
“Knew, she knows a lot more now. And she needs to grow into her role of queen.”
“And while she does that, you can do whatever you want.” Orel stated as Arius nodded.
“It is in my right as king.”
“Just like it is in the queen right to give you heirs when she does want to.” Themis added, my heart stumbled to a stop as it picked up its beating but at a frantic pace this time. I looked at Themis but she was glaring at Arius who turned away from her, not able to meet her gaze.
“What do you mean Themis?” I asked when I could get my throat to work.
“Can someone not hide anything from you?” Arius asks,
“The choice of you providing an heir to the throne is yours alone and based on how he is among other things, I would suggest you hold on to not giving him one yet.” Themis replied my question and ignoring Arius totally.
I rounded off to my husband, pushing at his chest while tears flowed from my face, I let him in me even though I didn’t want to, I saw it as my duty because that was what he told me. He isolated me from my people and his only to feed me lies about what his customs did say. “You bastard, one day I will castrate you, just watch.” I promised. “What other things.”
“Something tells me that your story is just starting.” Themis said with a haunted look on her face. “This time, not an empire but the whole world is in danger unless you make the right choices.” Themis added and her words brought a chill down my spine.
Was this the beginning of my story?
25 years later
“Father.” Elison waved to Orel over the plains, Orel had his arms round his wife as they watched their son who just took the warlord title from his father.
“Do us proud son.” Orel calls back to his son.
“He will, he always do.” I replied with a secretive smile.
“What?” Orel asks noticing my expression.
“Finally.” I replied.
“Finally what?” Orel asked again getting confused.
“Finally, the vision I had which made me trust you has finally happened. This is it.” I answered my husband as I leaned into Orel’s hold more and kissed his nape.
“What is?” Orel asked still confused, I am sure that to him, I am like a never ending puzzle, he still could not understand me fully and I am not sure he ever will.
“Our happily ever after.” I replied as I turned and watched our son across the fields, all our trials were over and now what was left to enjoy was… forever.
