Chapter 14 Through the Shadows

Ven
I didn't get a wink of sleep, so I made sure to drink Cynthia's lemonade whilst waiting for the time to execute my plan.
"The guard shifts are on, I'm alone in the dungeon." Carson's voice reached my head and I jumped out of my seat and pulled my black cloak on. I sprayed a good amount of scent concealing perfume all over my body before I made my way out of the packhouse using my secret route.
"We're in position." Jules' said through the link as I ran towards the secret passage to the dungeon.
"Good, I'm coming in." I said as I hoped in the rabbit hole. I rounded the corner and saw Carson standing in the aisle of the prison. He already put the criminals to sleep so that we can smoothly execute our plan. We rushed to Geo's cell and just like last night, my heart clenched at the sight of him, chained and slumped to the ground, fresh wounds from whipping evident in his skin. I glared at Carson who just held up his hands.
"I have to do it, or else they'll suspect something." He reasoned as he opened the gate.
I hurriedly went inside and gently placed my hand on Geo's shoulders, shaking him a bit. He groaned and opened his eyes. "Ven? You here to share one last meal with me?" His voice cracked as he said that, maybe from the sleepiness or the heaviness in his heart.
"No, I'm here to rescue you." I firmly said as I helped Carson unlock his chains. I'm not wearing any gloves so the silver burned my fingers too, but I didn't mind.
"Are you out of your mind? Your father -" He started complaining but I cut him off as soon as the chains were untied.
"Not now Geo. Just thank me later." I said as I placed his arm around my shoulders so that I can support his weak body.
"Remember, only go out in the open once I'm out. We don't wanna risk it." Carson said as we started walking towards the secret passage.
"Wait, he's also in to this?" Geo asked, referring to Carson who is cautiously looking out on the main hall before opening the passage for us.
"Yes. He's just got to do what he has to do." I answered. "Hold still." I said as I fished out a spray bottle in my pocket and sprayed it all over him to conceal his scent. After that, Carson closed the passage and we started walking through the dark and narrow tunnel. We can't really go fast in Geo's state, so we just have to be careful. We stopped when we're almost out of the tunnel and I fixed my hair.
"Why'd we stop?" He asked.
"We're waiting for someone's signal." I answered and he looked at me puzzled.
"You mean, aside from the guard, more people are in with this?" He followed up.
"Four more to be exact." I smiled.
"Now!" That was Carson, in my head and I hurriedly placed Geo's arms around me again.
"That's our cue." I said and emerged out of the trap door, helping Geo up. It's a good thing he's not that injured and he can still climb out. I pulled him to the bushes to avoid any attention and seconds later, alarm bells roared in the pack as per our plan . "Can you run?" I asked him when I saw that we ran out of bushes to hide in.
"I guess." He said and with that, I pulled him out in the open field seeing the patrols already on high alert. But of course their focus is not on our direction as they were mislead by Carson.
However, one of them saw us and charged towards us. Before he can tackle us though, a dark brown wolf met him. Jules! We kept running towards the forest as they fought. However, more patrols seems to notice us but of course Aliyah came in to help before they could get to us.
"We have to reach the river." I said, looking back at my friends who are struggling. Just when I said that, three border patrols blocked our path. "Run straight to the other side of the river." I firmly told Geo before I unwrapped his arm on my shoulders and shift into my wolf to meet their attack. I saw Geo hesitate but I growled at him to go and that's exactly what he did. I raised my paws and slap the wolf in front of me and then head-butted the second one that came my way. The third one was about to follow Geo but I leaped forward and blocked him. It didn't take long for Jules, and Aliyah to caught up to me, however, more guards are charging towards us and I don't really know if we'd be able to do this.
Geo
I sure as hell, was prepared to die, however, Ven never fails to surprise me. Now she actually schemed a full blown escape plan with her friends to save me! This woman is really something!
Even if my whole body is aching from the whipping that I received earlier after that good for nothing court trial, I picked up myself and crossed the river as Ven instructed. If walking on dry land is challenging at my state, walking through the rapidly flowing water is much harder. But of course, I didn't let that stop me as I heard how Ven and her friends are defending me from the sound of the fight just a few meters behind. When I almost reached the other side of the river, a wolf jumped at me. My whipped back was slammed into the rocks of the bank and I struggled underneath the wolf.
When it was about to bite me though, a light brown wolf tackled it off of me, and a girl around Ven's age helped me up. "Come on." She said, assisting me towards a car, parked behind some bushes.
"What about them?" I asked as she sat me down on the first row of the back seat.
"They'll be fine." She reassured. However, a loud and painful howl erupted from the fight and I looked out the window to see an awfully familiar golden brown wolf being thrown into the river bank. Ven!
I was about to jump out and help but the girl stopped me. "No, you'll blow our cover. Trust them, they know what they're doing!" She hissed, making sure that I won't go out.
"Are you crazy? She's obviously unconscious now!" I snarled. But I can only watch as two large wolves was about to take Ven. Suddenly another golden brown wolf appeared out of nowhere and protectively stood in front of Ven's unconscious body. He growled at the two wolves and dueled with them skillfully.
"What is he doing here? Did she tell him about the plan?" The girl blurted out and I just raised an eyebrow at her. "Oh sorry, that's her older brother, he isn't really part of the plan, but I guess he's here to help." She explained.
While Ven's older brother fought with the other wolves, her friends who came to our rescue earlier picked her up and then ran to the car. The girl with me hurriedly opened the door as they all shifted into their human form and hurriedly entered. The light brown wolf that saved me earlier took the wheel and then we sped off.
"Here, wear something." The girl said and they all put on their cloaks while I took the initiative of clothing the still unconscious Ven and cradled her in my lap since there's not enough space anyway.
"Thank you Ella." So the girl who didn't shift is Ella. At least I know one name now.
"Jules, tell your father about Von so that he can help him." The lady that is driving said to the only guy in the car.
"Done mom. Von was the one who told us to get on already." The guy, Jules answered.
"Did you know he was gonna help?" Ella asked.
"No, Aliyah and I just saw him appear after Alpha Archer threw Ven off." The guy answered. So it was that bastard Archer that knocked Ven out! My jaw clenched at the information.
"It was Alpha Archer that did this to Ven?" Ella exclaimed and it's only now that I'm noticing how her hands are glowing as she caressed her hair. She has an affinity! A natural wolf’s power to cure other wolves, she must come from a lineage of pack doctors.
"I'm glad Ven chose not to marry him after all. Damn!" The other girl, Aliyah said. Wait what? They're bound to get married? I feel my head spinning at everything that's happening.
"How is she?" Our driver asked, glancing at Ven for a while.
"Still unconscious, but she'll probably wake up soon as I've given her enough of my affinity." Ella answered. I was right about her, she’s indeed a pack doctor.
I have so many questions yet I remained silent as I stared at Ven, very much worried. Why does she have to go through all of the trouble to save me? Why would she risk this much for me? Why did she chose me over her family and her pack? What did I ever do to deserve this kind of kindness?
I was still lost in thought while the others were lost in their own discussion when I felt Ven stir into my arms and my heart immediately skipped a beat when I saw her eyelids fluttering open. Her ocean blues eyes met with mine and I felt like a needle has been pulled out of my chest.
"G-Geo?" Was the first thing she mumbled, catching the attention of everyone in the car. Not minding their eyes that are directed on us, I placed my forehead on hers, affectionately.
"You're safe. We all are." I reassured.
