~LEONA~
"Who are you to interfere?" One of them sneered.
He chuckled and took reserved but intimidating steps towards them.
"Just let her go while you have the chance else you'll regret it later"
What does he mean? Okay. What was I thinking in the first place? He's no commando or Lando. He can't take them.
" Who are you? Some police?" One of them asked with a mocking tone.
"Am not the police but someone greater and much fearful." He said and wrapped his hand around my wrist. "It's an order from a much higher authority."
Now he's bluffing.
" You can all go now, your boss sent me to bring her." He said and all four of us stared at him.
What is he saying?
The three men exchanged confused glances.
"Stop trying to mess with us. Our boss wouldn't send anyone."
So there's a boss? And why does he want...
I couldn't complete my thoughts. This people are no doubt Yolanda's men.
Fuck! I'm done for!
"Well well, I'll call him then am gonna tell him just the attitude you guys are displaying."
" Yes, call him." The three of them challenged Dave.
" Alright but I hope you know the consequences that follow when you doubt one of your own?"
Huh?
" And you know how angry our boss can get when he has to repeat his words." He said and fished his phone out.
" Are you one of us?" The man who seemed like the leader asked.
"Of course. Now stop asking those questions, I have to take her to the boss before he gets furious. You all know what he can do when you make him wait, don't you?"
The men nodded.
" Come on let's go." He whispered to me and pulled me along roughly.
"Do you need help? She can be a handful!" One of the men shouted after us.
Dave only raised his hand and waved "No"
" I know you lied to them," I whispered when we were some steps away.
" So? I had no option. Now keep quiet and walk fast." He whispered back and increased his steps.
"Hey! Wait right there! You lied to us."
One of the men screamed from the back and before we knew it, they began running in our direction.
"Hurry. Let's run." Dave said and we began to run.
My pain increased at each step. My ankle was hurting so much.
"What is wrong with you? Run faster" he said.
I nodded and tried to increase my speed but I couldn't. I didn't know his car was that far from where we stood earlier.
My hand slipped from his and I fell to the ground.
"What the fuck, Leona." He cursed and came to me. "Are you alright?"
I nodded.
He knelt in front of me with his back facing me and out of instinct, I moved to his back and he instantly got up.
It wasn't long before we got to his car and he quickly opened it after letting me down.
I entered and he drove instantly on full speed almost knocking the thugs over when they tried to stop the car.
"You know what? I really thought you were going to beat those men up like how it always happens in the movies. " I said and I heard him laugh.
" This is not some soap opera Leona. This is reality and in reality, these things hardly happen."
" With the way you appeared, someone will think you came to fight for me. Like, save the day."
" Well, I don't need to fight in order to save you. Come on Leona. Am a businessman and I still need my cute face to negotiate deals and hand to sign contracts. I can't let it be ruined by some useless thugs."
" You must be a coward then."
He snorted. " I'm not a coward. I can't worry my arms when I can easily use my brain to beat them. Those people are fools. Even you were able to detect that I was lying but they didn't. So now tell me, why should I let those fools ruin my face just for nothing?"
He's absolutely right and I'm beginning to wonder if indeed they were Lando's men.
" I can fight for you if the need arises, Leona. But fighting those thugs was just unnecessary."
"Taking to your heels obviously looked cowardly to me me though." I pouted. I hadn't realized when the dizziness cleared.
"Leona!" He sighed and I stared at the back of his head from the back."You think I will sit back and watch them take you away after they didn't believe me."
I shrugged. "I wish they hadn't believed you."
His slightly went sideways as he chuckled.
Thinking of it, I realized he wouldn't abandon me with the men without fighting back.
I leaned back, dropping my head and sighing heavily. Silence rested between as he drove for what seem like forever.
I don't even know where to start thinking about the unfortunate events I encountered today. I felt horrible knowing that Raymond will be dead worried about me.
I had totally forgotten that I informed him I was going to come home early but it was the opposite of it.
I sat up and my eyes began to search for my bag when he spoke.
"Raymond called severally while I was looking for you. I had to pick to stop him from worrying." He said and passed the bag to me.
I fished my phone out and truly, Raymond had called severally before he picked.
" Why did you have to come anyway?" I asked after some time.
"I was looking for you."
" Why?"
" Because we need to talk."
" There's nothing to talk about Mr. Anosova."
His eyes zoomed on me by the aid of his mirror.
" There's a lot we need to talk about, Leona." His voice was gentle.
" But I don't want to talk. And what are we going to talk about anyway?"
" Stop being adamant. You know what I mean." He sounded exhausted.
"Everything that happened has happened. Let it slide. We had sex and your fiancée that you thought you were hiding from me appeared and I walked away just like any normal person will do. End of story. There's nothing to talk about. But I'll tell you to pay attention to her henceforth. It's not cool to cheat and I hate that I had to be your accomplice."
" Don't lecture me. Kathie is nobody to me. "
" She's still your fiancée and It's only sex we had. Don't deny her because of it. " The words tasted bitter in my throat.
" What? What are you saying?"
"You heard me."
"You're not going to act as if what we did mean nothing to you are you? "
" Take me home," I said instead.
" Answer me, Leo." His hands connected to the steering wheel loudly.
"Don't make this weird, Dave. You shouldn't be here. It was only sex, get over it. "
" Will you stop talking nonsense! Stop belittling what we had. Besides Kathie is no one important."
" But you still engaged her. "
" I did that because I was made to. It wasn't my wish and I don't consider her as my fiancee. "
" But she considered you hers. Don't break her heart. " I answered his last words. A part of me rejoiced that he didn't engage her willingly.
" God Leo! Will you just stop it? "
"What is it, Dave! You lied to me. You should have told me earlier. Why did you have to lie?" I yelled.
" I don't talk about irrelevant things, Leo. And my engagement to Katherine is one of those things."
I was taken aback by his words. He doesn't sound like someone who likes her unless he's lying to me.
"I'm also nothing to you, Dave. Just your employee who offered her body to you. I'm also not relevant." My heart sank but it was the truth.
The car came to a sudden dangerous screeching halt beside the road.
"What in the world is wrong with you?. We could've gotten into an accident." I glared at him from the back seat.
" You and I have a different story, Leona. Stop comparing it to Kathie. I don't see Kathie the way I see you. Fuck, I've never done what we did to her or anyone before. Fine, I had a couple of relationships in the past but what I'm feeling for you is different and I can say it's the best thing ever. Stop letting Kathie taunt you unnecessarily. She's nobody. She's just intimidated by you. " His voice was loud and he sounded sincere.
" She's your mum's favorite. That's what you said so what is next now that you're already engaged? Marriage right? Tell me, when is that going to be?"
" There's not going to be something as such!" He turned to me.
" Listen, I can break my engagement with her now.."
"Why would you do that? You've been engaged for god knows how long so why will you do that all of a sudden?"
" I didn't have a reason to but now I have. You're that reason, Leona."
" Stop being funny Dave. How did I become your reason all of a sudden? You barely know me and vice versa."
" You're right but what does it matter? You make me happy and that's what matters to me most. Fine!Just ask me what you want to know and I'll tell you."
There's a lot of things I'd like to ask him but now that he has given me the opportunity, all of them vanished into thin air.
"You said you didn't engage her willingly. What was the reason?"I asked out of all questions.
" Because that's what my mum wanted. She wants us to get engaged." He answered.
" What was her reason? Is it just because she likes her?" I couldn't help but ask.
" Well, my mum wanted.."
" Wait, I hope you won't start asking me questions like this after I'm done? If that is the case then forget about my questions. You seriously didn't have to answer or explain anything to me."
I don't want the situation where I will feel guilty for keeping things from him when he has been open. Let us all keep it to ourselves.
" You don't have to say things you're not ready to say but yes, I have a few questions for you, and trust me, Leona, I won't rest until you answer me. You'll have to!" He sounds determined.
