" Listen, enough of your jokes. I'm being serious here and the one in question is no ordinary person."
" Do I look like I'm joking?"
" Then what are you saying? Where do you know him from and how are you related to him? I never mentioned his name so how did you know him?"
" You worry too much, Leona. You should know by now the person you claim you're working with. Yes, he's no ordinary person and he's very dangerous. I got to know when I encountered him."
" How did you encounter him? Have you worked for him before?" I got up from where I knelt.
" No. That's ridiculous. He tried to defame me in the past because he was paid by a competitor of mine. That was how I got to know him for the first time. After the case was resolved I never saw him again but I couldn't have forgotten him so soon."
" You must have a sharp memory to still have his name." I was still not convinced.
There's something amidst.
"Forget about that Leona, the fact is I know the man who's giving you a hard time."
" Yes great." I tried to put my hands on my waist but I groaned instead. I forgot that I hurt my hand.
"I'm still going away because you're now a suspect."
" Don't think that way. We should rather think of how to get you out of this mess."
I'm not buying that easily. There's more amidst.
"Fine, I went through your phone when you were asleep. I didn't intend to but it wouldn't stop ringing and I wanted to see who was calling. I saw the message he sent and a few others. I gave the number to my private investigator and he traced the number and that was how I got to know." He got up and walked to me.
" You shouldn't have gone through my phone, Dave. I was wondering who deleted my messages, so you did?."
" I'm sorry." His face was remorseful.
So he knew who I was dealing with, that's why he wanted me to tell him everything.
"Okay, but it still doesn't change anything."
" You don't have to go to him. Just have faith in me."
" And how are you going to do that? You don't look like that type."
" What type, Leona? How do you want me to look? Like some Mafia?" He raised his voice a little.
" You're getting me wrong. You don't really know the person I'm dealing with. He's more dangerous than what you're busy imagining. He didn't let me go, Dave. I escaped from him. I ran and now he's after me. If he doesn't get me then he'll go after my family please understand." I tried to reason with him.
" I understand you perfectly Leo, but you can't go back to him. I won't allow it!" He turned away from me.
I turned him back to me. " What are you saying? You should be mad to think like that. Don't complicate things for me please!"
" Complicate? Do you think things will be okay if you go back to him? Why don't you understand that this madness will never be over if you go back to him? It will just continue and there'll be no end. Let whatever that will happen take place. I'm not boasting but I will never allow any harm befallyou or any of your family I promise."
I huffed. My eyes met the clock and it was 1 am.
This argument will not end anytime soon if I don't do anything. Dave is so adamant, he doesn't want to listen to me. He's so stubborn.
He claims he knows Yolando but with how he's speaking I can see he doesn't really know him at all.
Yolando is so dark, darker than sin. He has shed so much blood and most are those who try to challenge him or act stubbornly.
He doesn't hesitate to take people's lives. It's something he derives immense pleasure from. So how can I not take this person's threats easily?
He's a devil and as much as I don't want to admit it, I know that I'm afraid of him. A lot.
Especially now that I went against him by escaping. I can't double my punishment by being stubborn.
I'd rather sacrifice my life than lose the life of any of my family. I can't bear it. I can't. If I'm going down, I won't go with anyone else, just me alone.
If Dave were to be in my position, he won't be saying all this.
"Stop overthinking it. I got you." He wrapped his arms around me securely.
I nestled into him. His arms around me were comforting in ways that I can't explain.
I felt safe and secured but how long will I stay in his arms feeling safe alone when my family's life is in danger.
I can't be that inconsiderate and heartless.
"You don't have to worry about your family Leo, I'm promising that nothing will happen to them while I'm still breathing. I'll do my best but you really don't have to go back."
He sounded so sure and full of confidence that makes me want to trust and depend on him.
"Should I trust you?" I asked, staring into his oceanic eyes.
"Completely." He said and locked eyes with me then he spoke calmly in assurance.
"You should know this Leona, that we're a team now. Whatever you lack, I got you. We'll balance each other out? Minor setbacks like Yolando? I'll make a greater comeback that he can't withstand. Got a bad day? Well, I promise a better night till forever. Do you need support? I'll be your backbone through all thick and thin. I'll be your shield as long as you appreciate me and remain consistent you don't have to doubt my loyalty. You got me, I got us."
I didn't know how to react to what he just said. The feeling was indescribable and I felt utterly speechless and taken aback. These are just the words I wanted to hear.
"You're so nice Dave but I don't understand why," I muttered feeling emotional.
" You'll soon know why Leona." He hugged me tightly.
I sniffed, pressing my face into his shirt.
"I'm sorry about all the shit you have to go through Leona. I regret leaving you at the hospital that day. I could've taken you along."
" It wasn't your fault, Dave. I was pregnant, you remember? And you thought I was married. You wouldn't like to keep someone's wife right?."
" But still, I could've done something."
" It's okay, the deed is done. It can't be undone and regretting it now is only going to hurt. It's too late to regret "
" But I'm still sorry, you went through so much."
" It's okay, I consider it a blessing in disguise. I got Leonard, the best gift ever." I smiled against his chest as I remembered my little boy.
"So how come you were a virgin?"
The question didn't freak me out like it did some days or hours back.
"I had a C-section, Yolando suggested it when my pregnancy was only eight months. He couldn't wait..... You know" I explained.
He moved the shirt I'm wearing up and brushed his hand on my stomach where the almost faded scar was.
He bends and places a kiss on it. "I'm proud of you Leona. You're the strongest person that I've ever come across."
I bent to his level and whispered.
" And you're the bestest man I ever met."
He pulled me up and wrapped his arms around me again.
" So have you found his father yet?"
" I told you. I have no idea."
"I'm sorry about that." He apologized again.
" Don't you ever get tired of saying sorry?" I chuckled.
"Thanks for sharing the details with me. I couldn't have asked for more. Thanks so much...it means a lot." He kissed my cheeks adoringly.
" I never confide in anyone but now that I did, I feel like half of my problems have been solved. ." I smiled at him.
" Is it? I'm glad you told me first. Therefore, I'm grateful."
" You were determined. I couldn't have held it in any longer."
" Let's say, I always get what I want." He grinned, closing an eye.
" God, you're so conceited!" I grunted, hitting his chest playfully.
