Chapter 41: Half Confessing

The next morning, Selene arrived at the Artistica site just after seven thanks to their family private plane she can travel anytime she wants.
The air in the site smelled of damp cement and fresh-cut steel, and the rhythmic sound of machinery had already begun. She wore a navy-blue blazer over a pale blouse, her hair tied in a sleek bun, and a high-vis vest thrown over her shoulders. The site was alive with motion—cranes turning, workers shouting over radios, engineers marking lines on the asphalt.
Eliane met her near the scaffolding. “We’re prepping the east-wing paneling. That hiccup in the electrical system’s been resolved—consultants came in last night and isolated the issue. No delays.”
“Good,” Selene nodded, taking the offered hardhat. “Have the glass panels arrived from East Bay?”
“They came in at dawn. They’re inspecting now. I’ve got Rico double-checking the specs and Engineer Sebastian was there to carefully review the materials.”
Selene’s eyes swept over the east corridor, already envisioning the completed walkways and artistic installations. This wasn’t just a structure—it was going to be the city’s cultural heartbeat. Her vision. Her legacy.
“I’ll do a full walkthrough with the engineers after the design meeting,” she said. “Then I need to head back to Hillwood by two. Skylar’s team is expecting the finalized logistics timeline.”
Eliane’s brow lifted slightly. “You’re really splitting yourself in half.”
Selene offered a brief smirk. “It’s not splitting—it’s multiplying.”
They shared a look of mutual respect before Selene made her way across the site. The next few hours flew by: a rapid series of safety briefings, material verifications, and a tense discussion with the tile supplier who tried to sneak in a late substitution.
"Selene" Sebastian called her as she was about to leave for another flight to Hillwood
"Is there any problem Engr. Ford?" She ask
"No.. With my supervision we will never encounter any problem and thanks to your representative we manage to fix the previous problems... The thing is I wanted to asks if you have free time to spare"
"Do I look like I have a free time to spare Mr. Ford?"
"Well its not necessarily now... Just contact me if you have your free time... You're too busy to schedule a private appointment these past few weeks"
"I'm too busy to entertain private meetings not related to my work right now so you should wait until I can spare some free time"
"Okay no problem with me"
"Okay so are we good now?"
"Ahmm not yet... As you can see Artistica is almost completed thanks to both of our hard working employees and machineries maybe we need to schedule a meeting with the CEO to talk about the launching preparations?"
"I'll set a meeting with him so we can talk about this matter... But for now I have to leave since I have an important meeting need to be attended by me personally"
"Okay perfect then... Go ahead" Selene then bid goodbye and left the construction site while Sebastian went back to the inspection area to verify the materials delivered will pass it's standard
Meanwhile..
By midday, she was back in the car, her driver weaving through the Highway as she reviewed documents on her tablet. Her phone buzzed again—this time from Kian.
> How’s Hillwood progressing? Want to align budgets before our quarterly report?
She replied:
> All on track. Will forward updated financials after logistics timeline is finalized today.
She didn’t need to explain anything more. Kian trusted her decisions. That had become their silent system—he handled the corporate boardrooms, and she built the bones of the empire.
By 2:30 p.m., Selene was back at Skylar Corporation, walking briskly past the receptionist. This time, she was expected in the East Strategy Wing—a sleek, glass-paneled war room reserved for multi-departmental planning.
Clark Skylar was already seated at the head of the long table, surrounded by his top logistics officers, two lead architects, and a softly murmuring AI assistant projecting supply chain flowcharts in mid-air.
He looked up as she entered, offering a nod. “Selene. You made it just in time.”
“I always do,” she replied, setting her files down and taking the open seat across from him.
The meeting kicked off with projected material costs and delays from a supplier in East Bay. Clark’s voice was firm but composed, while Selene took the lead in suggesting contingency suppliers and rerouting strategies. Every time a problem was posed, she countered with a solution. Every risk was matched with a mitigation plan. Even the senior logistics manager, a skeptical man named Reaves, eventually leaned forward with grudging approval.
“I suggest we freeze Phase 2 development until we receive the seismic report from our engineers,” Selene said firmly. “We don’t gamble on subsoil here.”
Clark nodded. “Agreed. Push the timeline by ten days, but frontload warehouse prep and long-term drainage layout.”
“Done.”
When the meeting adjourned, most of the team filtered out quietly, their murmured chatter indicating satisfaction. Selene began gathering her documents, but Clark paused beside her.
“You’ve built something rare,” he said quietly. “Trust. Among people who don’t hand it out easily.”
She looked up, surprised by the rare note of sincerity in his voice. “I didn’t build it to be liked. Just to be respected.”
“You’re getting both.” A slight smile. “Even Reaves didn’t push back. That’s a miracle.”
She allowed a small laugh. “Maybe he’s just tired.”
Clark moved slightly closer, his expression unreadable. “Out of curiosity, have you thought about having a relationship?”
"As of this moment it's not my priority... I barely git time to go home and sleep because of the multiple works I have to take care since my other brother is currently busy with his new family"
"I mean your still young and I am still young, maybe in the future we can schedule a private meeting"
"A Date?"
"Yeah a date exactly"
"I'll think about it" Selene responded
"Judging from your expression you will never have time to think about it"
"Maybe yes, maybe not"
"Haha.. Nice... Well how about this I'll be visiting east city one of these days promise me you will schedule a private meeting with me at least a tour to the city you developed"
"Sure just call me anytime Mr. Skylar"
"Perfect then... And Please call me Clark, Mr. Skylar makes me like an old fat businessman"
"If that's what you want Clark"
"That's better"
"I'll go ahead then" she then bid goodbye to Clark
By the time Selene left, the city was bathed in soft amber light again. She sat in the backseat of the car, silently watching the horizon roll by. Her phone buzzed one last time.
Another message from Sebastian.
She didn’t hesitate.
Archived.
Little did she know in the parking area where Clark and Selene talked and bid goodbyes a pair of eyes is watching them and it was Sebastian.
Sebastian knew Selene is not welcoming his presence romantically she was only interacting with him professionally and he proved it today when Selene didn't even care to read his message
If only she knew..
After Selene left Sebastian also left the building and went to his family home where he was born and raised by his late parents
